Costco had #Apple#AirTags on sale. Having never used one, I decided to buy a couple. I now have two smooth, round things on my desk that apparently don't stick or attach to anything without additional hardware, that I guess I can... put in a box that I might lose? Not really sure I understand this product.
#AirTags range: here’s how far the tracker can reach
The range of AirTags varies depending on the method you use to locate them. A Bluetooth connection will work when your AirTags are close to your supported Apple device. Otherwise, Apple’s #FindMyNetwork is utilized.
However, it is 👉 important to note that #UltraWideband isn’t available in all countries or regions and is subject to international regulatory requirements.
Friendly reminder, it's been over a month since Apple and Google published an "unwanted tracker" specification. Apple has still not offered any timeline on when the iPhone will be updated. Apple is holding Google's competing "find my device" network hostage, while they profit from being the only option at scale.

#Apple#AirTags#Surveillance#Privacy: "Over the past year, Apple has taken protective steps to notify iPhone and Android users if an AirTag is in their vicinity for a significant amount of time without the presence of its owner's iPhone, which could indicate that an AirTag has been planted to secretly track their location. Apple hasn't said exactly how long this time interval is, but to create the much-needed alert system, Apple made some crucial changes to the location privacy design the company originally developed a few years ago for its “Find My” device tracking feature. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University and the University of California, San Diego, say, though, that they've developed a cryptographic scheme to bridge the gap—prioritizing detection of potentially malicious AirTags while also preserving maximum privacy for AirTag users."
This month, more than three dozen victims allegedly terrorized by stalkers using Apple AirTags have joined a class-action lawsuit filed in a California court last December against Apple. I can’t speak to the intentions or inabilities of airlines and airports, but I can tell you that #airtags and #findMy by Apple are “indispensable” tools for any traveler. I’ve seen it in action for myself and a friend this month.

#AirTags#PhysicalTrackers#Privacy#Security: "It is impossible to make an anti-theft device that does not alert the thief that they are being tracked without also making a perfect tool for stalking. Apple is careful not to advertise the AirTag as an anti-theft device for this reason, but other makers of physical trackers such as Tile explicitly bring up anti-theft as a use case for their product. If physical trackers are going to have effective anti-stalking mitigations, then manufacturers need to give up on the anti-theft use case predicated on unknowingly tracking the thief and sneaking up on them. You cannot have both. EFF believes that people are more important than property, and we hope that the companies will come to agree. In any use cases that get defined in the specification, the security of those who do not want to be unknowingly tracked should be prioritized over the ability to track the location of stolen items.
Additionally, unwanted physical trackers should be accountable. Manufacturers should store the bare minimum of information about the phone or account that the tracker is paired to, and they should store it for a time and in a manner consistent with their data retention policies. The information should be made available to others only in response to a valid court order.
Any standard should also protect the privacy of the owners of physical trackers. We are concerned that having physical trackers rotate their identifiers only once a day will provide insufficient defense against a sophisticated tracking network. Weak privacy protections for a device that is frequently attached to keys and wallets could be used for location tracking by unscrupulous governments, law enforcement, and private actors. "
Orrr…
Finished replacing the batteries🔋 of all #AirTags we own. I always thought there were just a handful for wallets and keys but it seems we've built-up quite the setup over the years. They make a really cute churpy noise when starting up.
Parents are using #AirTags to track #kids too young for a phone
Despite Apple's warnings, parents and caregivers are using AirTag trackers to keep tabs on their kids. Is it helicopter parenting or a new way to let go? #privacy#surveillance#apple#tracking
#iOS17 will finally introduce #FindMy device sharing. I hope we will be able to share #AirTags, which I assume will be the case as shown on animation from #wwdc2023 into presentation. 🙌
