Really hard conversation today about what was given up in youth for the sake of before we were old enough to understand the cost. Touched on everything from special interests to expressions of gender identity. ❤️‍🩹

#Sikh & #Muslim #mothers are trying to break the #shame & #stigma surrounding #autism in their community.

They have described feeling #SociallyExcluded & say husbands & partners also need to take up caring duties.

Habiba, whose son is #autistic, said: "It's really #isolating & stressful as there is often #gaslighting & #UnsolicitedAdvice which can lead to feeling very lonely."

3 #SouthAsian charities also say #ignorance & #myths need to be tackled.

My friend tells me that I am the only friend of hers who is willing to hear her out on why she does the way she does things without offering unsolicited advice or being judgmental about her lifestyle. Which is sad. We neurotypicals really need to do better.

Though I sometimes wonder if there is a good business case for "Neurotypicals explain weird neurotypical stuff to people"... but nah. Someone else can tackle that one - I have enough on my plate as it is. 😉

@actuallyautistic Have you seen this resource yet?

“The Autism Books by Autistic Authors Project is an (ongoing) attempt to catalogue all books — non-fiction and fiction — written about and related to autism by Autistic authors.”

There are over 1,000 books catalogued! Including mine and other authors I see in my feed here on Mastodon.

Much enjoyed "Understanding Autism," poignant new doc coming to @PBS April 4th by director Scott Steindorff, featuring a broad range of voices. I'm in it briefly. 30-second trailer: https://vimeo.com/914968732/8b5aea9a6a?share=copy

@actuallyautistic Wanted to share this little life saving, cheap device for anyone else with temperature sensing and regulating issues.

Did you know temperature can increase in some cases by up to 8°C before an autistic person may be able to detect the shift?

After long years of confusion I realised this issue of delayed detection applies to me.

Now I have this in sight all day, and as soon as it goes over my comfortable threshold of 24C I know to take action.

To whom it may concern:

As an user of your website, I'm working hard enough just to cope with reading your text. Please don't also make me cope with stuff that moves or slides or fades too. Just present me with a static, stable thing to parse in my own time. And don't have things that move or slide (eg. fancy navbars) when I move my pointer (which I may be doing as a reading aid).

Because I'll probably just go shop elsewhere.

Thank you.
