"An interesting problem of labor is that humans aren't truly replaceable except in a system that has turned labor activities into essentially mechanical work..."

I'll distill the Coming Labor Apocalypse metaphor to its absolute essentials:

  • People do labor in exchange for food.

As hunter gathers, that meant hunting and gathering to eat. Let's ignore people gaming the system, parasites, cheaters, etc., for a moment. In modern terms, we "work" as an end to a means of "eating." Automation and misapplied AI disrupts this in the name of efficiency by interrupting the means for people to do labor that will allow them in the end to eat.

Of course, that means those elements of society that benefit in selfish ways from efficiency, let's call them people who game the system, parasites, and cheaters, end up with nobody able to eat because people no longer can provide labor in exchange for food.

In other words, if you have no money, you can't buy things. You can't eat. You become angry.

Efficiencies should provide more for everyone, but the short-sighted and selfish miss this.

Eliminating labor, without fixing the system (providing basic income, for example), leads to pitchforks and torches, thus the .

worthy.

: "Where once it was the mindedness of manual labour that found itself embodied in new devices, in a context of stratifications where the intellectuality of such realms was denied, in current machine learning models it is human discourse per se that is objectified in machinery. If the politics of machinery was never neutral, the level of generality that mechanization is now reaching should be ringing alarm bells everywhere: these things cannot safely be entrusted to a narrow group of corporations and technical elites. As long as they are, these tools – however magical they might seem – will be our enemies, and finding alternatives to the dominant paths of technical development will be a pressing matter."

: "In 2023, the biggest story in tech was the rise of OpenAI and Silicon Valley’s embrace of generative AI. This year, the technology may grow only further entrenched: OpenAI is attempting to make its flagship product, ChatGPT, a stickier part of daily life with the launch of a new app store, and the company has inked deals with institutions such as Axel Springer and Arizona State University to broaden its reach. But in contrast to many previous tech trends, this story includes a grassroots movement amassing to resist the change. Like Crabapple, many of those who have joined proudly embrace the mantle of Luddite. Yes, the industry continues on its march, collecting huge investments to rapidly accelerate the development of this controversial technology. But the events of the past several months have demonstrated that, on some key fronts, the Luddites are winning."

Tim Harford summarises the paradox of (something we should all be concerned about):

;An automated system can assist humans or even replace human judgment. But this means that humans may forget their skills or simply stop paying attention. When the computer needs human intervention, the humans may no longer be up to the job. Better automated systems mean these cases become rare & stranger, and humans even less likely to cope with them'!

we have been warned

In @homeassistant @homeassistant , is there a way to group multiple entities (NFC tags in particular) such that I define one automation for the whole group such that I can queue their execution? I want to scan one tag to start an action with one value of an input parameter and it takes a while to execute. Then only once that is done I want to run the same action with a different input corresponding to this other tag that I scanned while the first action was running.

I've created a more modern idea with their Wireguard servers along with renewing the tunnel every 15 minutes and adapted to work with qBittorrent. I need to document and get this into version control somewhere.

This entire article is about the trucking industry and trucking jobs, ultimately arguing it's a "good thing", even if it destroys hundreds of towns and casts millions out of work.

Those millions aren't going to be taking up poetry, art, or writing. Under the current way things work in the US, they're going to be driven to poverty and homelessness, poor health, and worse.

: "De Liban, the Legal Aid lawyer, told me that trying to fix the algorithm sometimes distracts from the need to fix the underlying policy problem. Algorithmic decision-making is predisposed to inflict harm if it is introduced to triage support in a benefits system that is chronically underfunded and set up to treat beneficiaries as suspects rather than rights-holders. By contrast, benefits automation is more likely to promote transparency, due process, and “equitable outcomes” if it is rooted in long-term investments to increase benefit levels, simplify enrollment, and improve working conditions for caregivers and caseworkers.

Policymakers should not let hype about generative AI or speculation about its existential risks distract them from the urgent task of addressing the harms of AI systems that are already among us. Failing to heed lessons from AI’s past and present will doom us to repeat the same mistakes."
