Alright, it looks like #Bluesky is becoming Normie Mastodon, so I’ll have to actually use that account. I’m not leaving this place but I would like a good bridge, which I think already is in the works but does anyone have any details for people that might want to cross post?
@securescientist Main selling point to end users seems to be that its architects think it's got a better solution for migrating accounts from one server to another. I gather that's generally regarded as probably true, but hasn't really been tested because there's only one active node in their network of servers.
Value prop to investors seems to be that it has monetization built into its protocol. So it's gonna obviously generate a lot more buzz in places that can be traced to VCs.
For anyone on BlueSky, I can be found with my last name as my custom domain. Love to see what kind of overlap there is between the two communities #bluesky#twitter
My favourite thing about #Bluesky is that it uses domains as usernames, because it means there's absolutely no reason for me to get in early to register a good one.
I feel like I've largely rebuilt the community I had on Twitter over here on #Mastodon and am just not interested in #BlueSky right now. I'm honestly disappointed that they deliberately chose not to have #ActivityPub compatibility. Also, I don't really trust Jack, either. He very intentionally pushed for Elon taking over Twitter. Going to BlueSky seems sort of like falling for your ex again because they changed their name from Brianna to Bri and started wearing a leather jacket.
@Whizanth@gmate8 You're correct that #ATProto itself doesn't use crypto but that doesn't mean it isn't a planned thing for #BlueSky itself. Considering Jack is behind it and largely funded it with bitcoin, it's not hard to connect those dots.
@vwbusguy Mastodon hint: export the list of people you foĺlow. I got bumped off an instance because of hair-trigger moderation & the Mastodon archive you can get doesn't include who you followed.
I had a nice community experience. It hasn't fully rebuilt yet.
@LouisIngenthron I'm still doing my research, but I don't think that's a correct characterization. It's an open protocol designed to limit lock-in to any host. Time will tell whether a truly decentralized ecosystem actually emerges.
There seems to be a growing amount of uninformed, negative posts on #Mastodon about #Bluesky.
It’s unfortunate that a platform which believes is populated by open minded people do not gather information themselves to form a balanced opinion, but rather jump on the “echo chamber” bandwagon instead.
Kind of reminds me of behavioral patterns on #Twitter. Remember it’s not the platform, but what you bring with you that matters.
@alastor8472 Reasonable account portability is #1 on my wish list of next steps that I feel should have been implemented long ago. It also seems like something that the Mastodon devs in particular are not interested in implementing any time soon.
#Bluesky seems interesting but the number of bots this early into development is really concerning. Shouldn’t the invite-only signup process be doing more to curb this?
If Bluesky was a benevolent initiative they would have spent some small part of their many millions over the past 3 years engaging in meaningful dialogue with the world's foremost decentralised social network: the fediverse. They didn't do that.
They did try to poach some key figures from fedi's tech pool though, no doubt offering salaries well above what most here earn.
Which is reminiscent of another actor with deep pockets which conducted studies of the fediverse: the EU. They funded Eunomia to the tune of many millions whilst communicating effectively zero with the wider fediverse.
If they do actually want Europe to become a tech player on the global stage they have an open goal with the fediverse: a much better model to the 'walled garden' model promoted from Silicon Valley. A small percentage of the EU's budget could transform the fediverse and the web.
@fedi I’m not so concerned about a lack of conversation, as such. I would expect them to have studied the core base and poured over how it hangs together and learned from it, but I’m not so sure we should be arrogant enough to put Fedi on a pedestal of being the pinnacle of decentralisation.
It is, by a country mile, the best thing we have going right now. But that doesn’t mean something else can’t be better.
#Bluesky must've really taken off this weekend, because I've never seen so many posts about it here before.
I think we should wait and see how it turns out. It doesn't even have federation yet, so I can't really encourage it, but if the "mastodon.social promotion in the #Mastodon mobile app" thing is any indicator, we need another serious player in the federated microblogging space. Competition is good, actually, remember? 😄
