I had a great Sunday with my friend, Sarah! She came over earlier. We did mini home spa treatments. I did full skincare spoils for her because she doesn't treat herself to spa facial treatments & deserves some pampering. Afterwards, we went to the outdoors expo, at Juan de Fuca Rec.
Just got back home & am relaxing as my #Vietnamese#BòKho (beef stew) finishes simmering. I put it on slow cook before going to expo.
We got their 3 packs for $20 expo deal. 2 black pepper & 1 original. To share. Beef jerky is one of my fave snacks. I bring with me on many outdoor adventures.
It's sad that some of us still believe that locally made products should not cost as much as global brands.
I'm willing to pay extra if the piece is superbly crafted, especially if it means being able to help local artisans eke out a living by supporting local brands.
Disclaimer: The actual price tag in "question" is not even as much as, say, a regular-priced Kate Spade shopper tote.
She sells sea shells down by the sea shore, while
Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. Why don't they just merge as "Peppers 'n Shells" and set up a tent at the local farmer's market?
Wanted to order something, but the item descriptions made absolutely no sense since the last time I was on the site. What happened? Found a small notation: "Descriptions now created with AI". Garbage. Utter garbage. To hell with it.
Came up with this list last year, but can't find it, haha! Sharing this again in case you're still not done with your Christmas shopping. Here are local brands to support this holiday season:
It's that time of year when many more sales than usual are happening. I encourage you to #BuyLocal, attend local art/craft sales & buy #handmade items from people in your community. You #SupportYourNeighbor, keep the money in the community, & have wonderful things to use.
Today I was honored to be able to buy an amazing necklace from a Lady of the #SaginawChippewaTribe. I'll wear it for years & get lots of pleasure out of the necklace, & the joy that I will also cross paths with her again.
Needed a break yesterday so we went "Begyle Brewing" near the Irving Park Brown Line. Chicago has a great craft beer scene and @seanbala is following the "Chicago Brew Pass" from "Choose Chicago" - this is our third one! We got some excellent Begyle Blonde Ale (according to @dohappybelove it has hints of rose and honey). The atmosphere was really relaxed and cozy.
Handmade bags made of locally available materials (this is made of abaca) are my weakness, like this one that has served me for almost a decade now and is still on heavy rotation.

The National Independent Venue Association Calls Out Live Nation Over New Merch Cuts Program
"Such tactics threaten the vitality of small and medium-sized venues under 3000 capacity."
If you want to bitch at <fill in the blank big multinational corporation that's ripping you off>, PLEASE DO!
If, however, there is a #LocalBusiness that is HANDMAKING their products trying to eek out an existence in this crazyass world, and those products don't EXACTLY precisely fit your needs, then by all means...
Hooray for freshly restocked beans stash! This grocery-bought local brand is actually pretty decent considering the price tag (it has a nice packaging, too!). Also available in Lazada: https://s.lazada.com.ph/s.i1F5E
I remember going to this trade show when I was still working at a home magazine. I'd always leave the venue in awe of Pinoy creativity and craftsmanship.
The only downside? I'd always wish I had a bigger house (and lots of moolah) so I can bring home one or two of the exquisite furniture pieces. The fashion accessories are also superb and are more accessible/affordable, haha!
The NZ Gov't is hopeless at procurement. It's committed to policies that are implicitly '#TrickleDownEconomics' but almost exclusively for the benefit of foreign corporations. Here's a more recent look: https://www.newsroom.co.nz/govt-struggles-to-fix-poor-procurement
We need an anti-foreign-corporate government. They are the problem & NOT part of the solution.
re:Mix is a kitchen blender which you use with your own glass jars. It’s made in #Berlin and “open source”, and the intent is for others to build & sell in their local region.
I have some scribbled notes about this, where basically a small business in Berlin doesn’t compete with one in Vancouver — or even Calgary or Toronto, just in Canada.
So: how might they work together? Pooling expertise, capital, promotion, etc, while focusing on regional production and sales.

@CandaceRobbAuthor@clive Agree! For delivery of books & music in the UK there's also www.hive.co.uk
My current favourite #IndieBookshop loves Hive. The #bookshop is tiny, with very high danger-to-size ratio, & has made as much money through nominations on Hive as on direct sales. Hive is run by Gardners the big UK book distributor. If you can pick up in the shop, it earns 25%.
@theconversationau save on meat by knowing what we are buying. Buying local at butchers in bulk. Eg we bought a hogget (is cheaper than lamb but only difference is a tiny bit more age on the it and has its 2 adult teeth up).A whole hogget was $300 for about 40kg. Works out cheaper, because had choice on how beast was cut up, know that will work for less food wastage for us as a family. Eg flaps n shanks into mince etc. Butchers sell halves too if freezerspace is issue. #supportfarmers#buylocal
