The idea that you can have transit extend the range of walking distance without embracing bikes as a transportation utility, in the sprawling american suburbs, is just delusional. But it's the delusion that most of our city budgets and plans are built on. Biking in Portland is faster than walking+transit for most values of A to B but I can nearly guarantee you need to elbow your way through car traffic somewhere on that trip. Land use and transit need bikes for glue.

@pleaseclap there's actually a lot of good reasons beyond and for cities to invest in bikes as , geometrically the needs more density because multi-level streets for cars are extraordinarily expensive and we've maxed out the drive-and-park model that much of the US grew and developed under. so the only way out of traffic , also solves , is viable alternatives to driving, is bikes

Not sure what to think about this. On one hand seeing a #vehicle going the speed limit and stopping at red lights will be welcomed, but I still feel like we need to move away from personal vehicles as much as possible. These vehicles don’t solve #congestion or deal with #climatechange in any meaningful way. What do you think about #autonomous vehicles?

So WestConnex was totally going to solve traffic in Sydney by adding more lanes for cars. Just a few teething problems on the Rozelle Interchange and it'll all clear up, they said.

I wonder how it's going?

"Gladesville and Drummoyne locals say gridlock is worsening in their suburbs following changes to improve traffic flow through the notorious Rozelle Interchange, with drivers using local streets as “rat runs” to dodge congestion."

Oh dear...

A leaflet from the early 1990s by Buses Ltd. promoted bus usage to tackle traffic and pollution and the 'Red Routes' scheme to keep the moving.

Mention that driver-only buses do not hold up traffic as ⅔ of bus passengers use passes or pre-paid tickets.

First page of the leaflet
Second page of the leaflet Buses provide an alternative transport system which could reduce this problem, benefiting you, your neighbourhood, your place of work and your world.

Never ceases to amaze me how somebody could easily fit a 10 minute ride into their day to run a quick errand if it saved them 10-20min of sitting in and looking for parking but DOTs spend millions of dollars to keep them in cars. And,! this last 10-20% of traffic, people who would rather be biking, is what creates . Half of daily trips are under 3 miles. 🙄

"If started with just one goal: to create the maximum amount of possible, we would end up with the system we now use.

If I'm constantly congested from morning until night, despite having an air purifier in a small room, vacuuming regularly, taking anti allergy medication, doing general stretches every morning, changing bedding weekly, and getting outdoor activity daily... Am I perhaps instead sick??? Or spending too much time on my computer instead?
