Results of a recent lighting survey in Rome showed that "walking comfort was affected by mean luminance of whole scene, of sidewalk, of lateral wall and of human body; luminance also influenced the perception of street lighting intensity and uniformity and, to a lesser extent, the visibility of other people and of background."
Interesting, plan to make it easier for bicyclists and pedestrians to access area in our town. I'm curious how many folks are "thinking outside the box" vs. just sidewalks. 🤔 #BikeTooter#ThousandOaks#VenturaCounty
"Pedestrian Head Starts, also called Leading Pedestrian Intervals (#LPI s), are a known and proven safety intervention used around the country. These give pedestrians the walk signal several seconds before drivers get a green light, 🚦so #pedestrians can begin crossing the street before drivers start to turn. This makes the #drivers more likely to see & stop for them.
Studies from other cities have found reductions in pedestrian crashes and near-misses... as much as 60%"

“The results show that making streets friendlier for #bikes — and sidewalks friendlier for #pedestrians — is actually good for #business. The rise of #completestreets and #roaddiets, as urban planners call them, has been a huge boon to businesses in #cities”
“survey after survey has shown that business owners overestimate how many of their customers drive to their stores, versus #walking or #biking”
They call for more data on the "death Toll", money and more (killer) roads, but never for a radical infrastructure redesign. No data on "roadkill" of native animals either.
@crosswalksLA
I came across this safety initiative as it relates to pedestrian crosswalks (in L.A.)
It's a collective group of people who are taking it upon themselves to do what the city fails to do...paint crosswalk markings at neglected intersections.
I personally think this is a wonderful example of people coming together to fix something for their larger community audience. And since it revolves around safety, I'm boosting it here.
Have a look at their before-and-after pictures and maybe give them a follow here on Mastodon (or support them via the link below). https://crosswalksla.org/index.html
They include an extensive 'how-to' here: https://crosswalksla.org/how-to-guide.html #safety#pedestrians#crosswalks#coop#collective#community
That section of Admiral Pl isn't well-lit. The #sidewalks are probably overgrown with sticker plants. The #bicyclist probably couldn't afford to get lights for their #bicycle.
Besides, remembering that one time I did everything right and wasn't even in the #street and still almost got killed.
Also, #TulsaWorld, a #DRIVER killed the ped, not a "truck". Why do all news orgs do this?
On September 13, 2023, the #ProjetMontréal administration announced that Camillien-Houde Road, one of only two roads providing access to #MontRoyal, would be closed to motorists as of 2027.
It is so exciting to see traffic signal programming like this in Madison. This is from one of our city traffic engineers (who also happens to be a regular cyclist).
