North American software developers are reasonably confident that can help them improve code security. In other regions? Not quite so much.

We know that the task demands of cognitive tests most scores: if one version of a problem requires more work (e.g., gratuitously verbose or unclear wording, open response rather than multiple choice), people will perform worse.

Now we have observed as much in Large Language Models: https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2404.02418

The tests included analogical reasoning, reflective reasoning, word prediction, and grammaticality judgments.

«The precondition for kitsch, a condition without which kitsch would be impossible, is the availability close at hand of a fully matured cultural tradition, whose discoveries, acquisitions, and perfected self-consciousness kitsch can take advantage of for its own ends. It borrows from it devices, tricks, stratagems, rules of thumb, themes, converts them into a system, and discards the rest. It draws its life blood, so to speak, from this reservoir of accumulated experience.»

xeophin,
@xeophin@swiss.social avatar

«Kitsch, using for raw material the debased and academicized simulacra of genuine culture, welcomes and cultivates this insensibility. It is the source of its profits. Kitsch is mechanical and operates by formulas. Kitsch is vicarious experience and faked sensations. Kitsch changes according to style, but remains always the same. Kitsch is the epitome of all that is spurious in […] our times. Kitsch pretends to demand nothing of its customers except their money-not even their time.»

xeophin,
@xeophin@swiss.social avatar

«Because it can be turned out mechanically, kitsch has
become an integral part of our productive system in a way in which true culture could never be, except accidentally. It has been capitalized at a tremendous investment which must show commensurate returns; it is compelled to extend as well as to keep its markets. While it is essentially its own salesman, a great sales apparatus has nevertheless been created for it, which brings pressure to bear on every member of society.»

xeophin,
@xeophin@swiss.social avatar

«[Kitsch] predigests art for the spectator and spares him effort, provides him with a short cut to the pleasure of art that detours what is necessarily difficult in genuine art. [Kitsch] is synthetic art.»

Seeing otherwise intelligent people fall for the fantasy that chat bots have a mind...

...feels a lot like watching an animal that sees its reflection and doesn't understand mirrors.

There's no "there" there, got it? It's just spitting back a funhouse mirror of what everyone else said.

Demystifying GenAI and ChatGPT
-- harness the practical and pragmatic parts of AI
-- you don't have to run your own models and LLMs
-- call out to OpenAI straight from your Kotlin/Java SpringBoot codebase
-- the real magic is finding a good use-case
-- most of what you hear and see out there today isn't a good use for LLMs in the first place

“But this doesn’t save any time!” 3 useful questions when trying :

  • Is there another way to get results I want? Don't give up right away.
  • Does AI make this task less or more annoying? Sometimes supervising drudge work feels better even if it's not faster; other times you'd still rather do it yourself.
  • Are results likely to improve as LLMs get better? If so, add a calendar reminder to try again in a few months. Or, keep a list of things you want to re-try post GPT-5 class models.

New AI music generator Udio synthesizes realistic music on demand.

But it still needs trial and error to generate high-quality results.

I think it saved me some time by giving me a general outline of the report. Otherwise, meh.

Scraping bots don't need ALT-texts for scraping (they have image recognition).

At the moment, the only ways to protect are and , https://glaze.cs.uchicago.edu/index.html and https://nightshade.cs.uchicago.edu/ and banning AI bots on your website in the robot.txt
