This mountain probably hardly needs an introduction: the Matterhorn (or Cervino in Italian, as it lies in the Swiss/Italian border) seen from the ascent to the Allalinhorn. With a height of 4'478 m / 14'692 ft it is the 10th highest mountain of Switzerland and was first climbed in 1865.

On the 150th anniversary of the first ascent, the mountain was given a day of silence, in remembrance and honor of the over 500 climbers who lost their lives trying to climb the Matterhorn. Anyone who was climbing the Matterhorn that day anyway, would get a fine of 5'000 CHF (5'500 USD).

Yesterday Jewels and I hiked a fun trail at Avalanche Preserve in Boyne City, Michigan. This photo was taken at a relatively flat section, but there were lots of elevation changes with an overlook at the top.

Yesterday we celebrated Richard’s birthday and avoided all things coronation with a lovely 10mile walk across the Malverns in scorching sunshine and with these epic views… 😅

As expected, it was a cloudy day but I was able to avoid rain. Three tops of Serpentera are a beautiful trail in Ligurian . I also had a very close encounter with one marmot that probably got wrong exit 😂 (no photo, it was super fast to hide again). My legs are destroyed, my soul is regenerated.

40 years ago today: Cowrock Mountain was the star of the show today, with many views from the open, rocky ledges and terraces around the summit. There were more great views of that maze of mountains and narrow valleys threading west and northwest towards the Western fork of the Blue Ridge.

Two more pictures of last weekends overnight stay in the mountains! This time the view from my sleeping bag before going to sleep and when waking up in the night.

It got down to -7°C, but the sleeping bag was quite warm. Especially the view in the night was amazing!

Picture of the moon and moonlit mountain tops below. Ice crystals sparkle on the sleeping bag.

Mood Photo of today is of Malham Cove in our home county of Yorkshire (yes, I know that Yorkshire is 4 counties, but I preferred it when Yorkshire was 3 Ridings). I set a scene of 'The Shires of York' fantasy series here. It's a popular area for walking with the limestone pavements atop the long extinct waterfall.

One of the most epic sunsets I've ever seen during a hike. I hope you like it!
I have some more of it and may share it the next time.

40 years ago today: I went to bed right after dinner but was not destined to get much sleep. Somewhere around 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning, the stillness of the mountain night was broken by the long, eerie shrieks of mortars plummeting to earth and subsequent loud explosions.

High altitude, big trees, the occasional snow drift, no people.

This is me being happy.

Had an amazing weekend overnighting near Hengill, Iceland. First time in winter conditions without a tent!

We also saw tracks of an Arctic fox and had a beautiful view onto Þingvallavatn.

The trail up the mountain winds past jagged cliffs, and would be invisible but for the tracks of an Arctic fox in the snow.
My minimal sleeping setup: sleeping bag, airmat and Elefantenhaut (~tarp). In the background, Þingvallavatn can be seen.

Since I moved to this account I've done a pretty bad job of posting nature photos, which was my original intent. So here is Fall Creek Falls, highest waterfall east of the Rockies. From a hike earlier this spring.

Was fortunate to see some of the wild burros wandering around the southwestern side of Death Valley National Park, it's always fun to see them doing their thing in such a relatively austere environment. These were taken at about 4,000' near Wildrose.

A 2022 Ontario road trip took me through Campbellford, where I stopped at Ferris Provincial Park and checked out Ranney Falls and the suspension bridge in the distance.
