Here's an excellent tip if you search for files on your computer a lot:
"Everything" from Voidtools. I discovered it a few years ago, and I use it all the time, every day. Indexing is superfast (as in a few seconds), and completely non-intrusive. And it locates your files instantly.
You can search for file content as well. Content is not indexed, but it's still pretty instant if I have a few thousand .syx files and need to locate the marimbas.
Hello, book indexers (and index fans) of Mastodon and the fediverse. I’ve set up a group at @indexodon so if you tag that account, it’ll share posts with the group’s followers. Please keep using #indexodon and other relevant hashtags too for search-and-find-ability, because we should be good at that.
@davemangot@timkmak Think of #hashtags as #indexing, not hoop jumping. Sure general search has value, but the ability to narrow search to those terms that the author chooses to #index is in many ways much more useful.
#Fediverse#writingcommunity,#writers, #editor, Literary Agents, Publishing houses, magazines, poetry anthologies, Editors ... Are you on Mastodon? If so, please comment and boost.
What hash tags do you use? How can we best find all of you? How do you hook up with writers? Are you using Mastodon to find writers?
We are looking to make a collection of agents, publishers, editors for use by writers on Mastodon. Can you help? Leave a response below. THANKS.
I’ll be back over here more now (for reasons) so here’s a brief re-#introduction.
I’m a UK freelance book indexer and editor on arts/humanities books for authors and publishers. I’m also a new cryptic crossword setter and a Welsh learner. I like dancing, laughing, music and pubs, often in combination.
Hashtags of interest include #crosswords#CrypticCrosswords#Cymraeg#DysguCymraeg#edibuddies#editing#indexing#indexodon
Happy to chat to decent folks both old and new to me. So hello/helô!
Among the suggestions here: #authors should openly share #data, #code, & #preprints. #Journals should require it. Indexing services should reward the journals that do.
To me, what's new & interesting here is going beyond authors & journals to #indexing & #abstracting#services to create incentives for journals to improve their policies.
Does your book need an #index?
Is the author the best person to do it?
Well, sometimes, but often not, for reasons of experience, skills, software, training and time.
So here’s an article I wrote for the Society of Authors: ‘Why you need and how to work with a book #indexer: a guide for #authors.’
Hope it helps! #indexes#indexing#indexodon
