If you want to sample the local close up, I recommend painting your roof white.

In less than an hour you will have numerous insects frozen in place for your viewing pleasure. 🤦‍♂️

I’ve decided to add blog content to my morning read. That said, I am actively looking for RSS-compatible #blogs with content related to #boating, personal (not cruise ship) #cruising, and the #GreatLoop. I prefer reading about #powerboat and #narrowboat travels instead of sailing travels. (I am admittedly too lazy to sail.) If you blog about your travels on the water, send me a link to your blog.

"Where are you?"

We rarely moor the boat in one place more than a day or two.

Guests planning to visit us ask us where we'll be on a certain date.

"In England." 😄

Our route's unpredictable due to water restrictions and stoppages—trees fall and block the canal; locks break.

It can take a mindshift for visitors to process: "One week ahead we'll tell you our target, and the night before we'll send you a digital map pin."

HeatHack: I've hung my quilt from the roof to keep the sun out of my office in the hope that I can cool it enough to make coding possible.

True !

This involves a brick, a stone Buddha and a woodworking clamp to create a gap for the tiny amount of breeze out there.

I could cook on my roof today, which the said would be overcast.

Now considering the wet towel popularised by Arnie in .

After the rush to Liverland, two days ago, I saw I'd misread the calendar. So we had a day off, yesterday.😂

Today we descend the Stanley flight into the docks. These locks, pictured, are broad beam (wide), so we're awaiting a boat to join us, to conserve water and share the work.

The volunteers speak , so lots of repetition with some of them, trying to understand even basic topics like the weather. 🌞

We've reached the Leeds & Liverpool Canal bridge that is biased against boats. Cars take priority during peak hours, and around here the afternoon peak starts at 2:00 pm!

At 6:00 pm we will resume boating until the wheels come off, hoping to reach Litherland before dark so we're set up to enter Liverpool with tomorrow's convoy.

A warm dry week has ended in chasing clouds and showers. It looks like a dampish Bank Holiday weekend here. Therefore it might be a good time to think about the special quality that rain has for touching us both physically and emotionally. Join me tonight as we listen to the wisdom of 2 very different writers on the language of rain: Thomas Merton & Tristan Gooley.

Does anyone have experience with Hyperoptic please? Looking at their 1gb fibre internet in the marina for the narrowboat, but their pre-sales 'support' is shockingly bad so far 🙄

I'm baking an apple dessert on board.

The oven's small so I first checked that the baking form fits.

Then my husband and I were both thinking the same thing: the gas bottle had better not run empty halfway through baking this!

We have dinner guests coming over from the next boat in 2 hours.

My husband made a delicious spaghetti sauce from scratch, for pasta.

We decided to backtrack ½ km to the junction for the Rufford branch of Leeds & Liverpool canal, to head north for a bit. To do so, we first had to continue toward Liverpool for ¾ hr (2 swing bridges, 1 dredging crew) before we could turn the boat.

From the junction, we joined Ron and Catherine for the first four locks. Now our two boats are moored end to end, in time for dinner and the sunset.

Things I learned from our first narrowboat cruise:

  • 99% of boaters were extremely friendly
  • Narrowboats can't steer very well going backwards
  • Doing locks with two boats was way easier as they move around less
  • Locks aren't as terrifying as they look (even the 11' deep one)
  • Parking in a marina in a side wind was a nightmare
  • Piling hooks > mooring pins
  • We didn't actually travel very far 😅

Walked around a familiar field with doggo 🐕 this afternoon to find, half way around that a bull 🐮 was hiding in the hedge just as we reached it.

Doggo looked, bull looked, I looked, doggo didn't bark 👏, we moved on and bull stayed placid. 😅

For evening walk decided to walk the same field, I mean, what's the worst that could happen? 🤷‍♂️ It's a favourite, better than the busy towpath.

I'm now sitting here with a dog who decided to roll in bullshit. 💩 🤦‍♂️

I’d like to put this out there to owners:

I’d love to swap a week or two cruising aboard your narrowboat for a week or two cruising aboard my Ranger Tug on the US . I’ll be doing the historic next summer and will be on the Atlantic Intercoastal Waterway from this October through next May. I don’t mind sleeping on a sofa if you don’t mind sleeping in a small lower private berth.

Let’s each get a taste of a different experience!

So far in today's diary we have seen a weasel running along a ditch towards us and attempted to steer an escaped juvenile cow away from the canal.

We managed that twice but couldn't get it back into the field with his mates so have notified the farmer.

My herding dog was extremely put out having been left in the boat and not allowed to join in. 🤷‍♂️

ARG potential snag with the narrowboat survey next week - there's not enough water in the single lock between the current mooring and the survey location round the corner! 🤷‍♂️

Recommendations for Holiday Hires.

I'm a complete newbie when it comes to such a topic but I have always wanted to take a short break on a

I was hoping this would be a place to ask for some recommendations on good ethical people/companies to hire from?

As for location I would be looking for somewhere near where i grew up .
