In 1889, & sat down for dinner with J.M Stoddart, editor of Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine.

There, Wilde agreed to write “The Picture of Dorian Gray”, & Conan Doyle “The Sign of Four” – one of his most famous stories.

Now, Conan Doyle’s letters recounting that fated dinner and his sole handwritten of “The Sign of Four” are being auctioned by Sotheby’s New York.

"Who art thou?" said the Giant. A strange awe fell on him, and he knelt before the little child.

The child smiled at the Giant. "You let me play once in your garden; today you shall come with me to my garden, which is Paradise."

Saw this on stage in Melbourne, it was quite amazing. Good to see it's finally made it to the provinces. ;)

look, i know he ain't gonna' shag me...but every year, when 16 october rolls round, he becomes one of my pin-ups.
never forget that one of the world's sharpest wits was more than his champagne-supping gadabout persona reflected. oscar wilde (born in 1854) believed that would spell true liberation for the human species.
(more about oscar to follow...)

I felt like a little poetry after a few puffs this evening and ended up reading "The Ballad of Reading Gaol" by Oscar Wilde. I highly recommend it if you have not read it already. I probably don't seem like the poetry type but every once in a while...

And all men kill the thing they love,
By all let this be heard,
Some do it with a bitter look,
    Some with a flattering word,
The coward does it with a kiss,
The brave man with a sword.

40+ years ago my father gave to me a small book with Oscar Wilde's select works and I've read all in few days.
I decided to take that old and wornout book and read again. How magnificent stories to treasure today. Young people should read them today

Today in LGBTQ History May 25, 1895: The authorities imprisoned socialist author Oscar Wilde for two years for “indecency” for having sex with men. Many potential witnesses refused to testify against him. However, he was still convicted. The judge said “It is the worst case I have ever tried. I shall pass the severest sentence that the law allows. In my judgment it is totally inadequate for such a case as this. The sentence of the Court is that you be imprisoned and kept to hard labor for two years.” The terrible prison conditions caused Wilde serious health problems and contributed to his early death.
