I'm all in on kbin, and now donate monthy to help fund its development. But we do need the content there... It will take time but I think we can do it.
Imagine the content that reddit has, but spread across the Fediverse, on numerous servers. One goes away, another is there to save the knowledge. No central repository controlled by a single entity.
Found a random thread on the #threadiverse where someone was asking "What is something really stupid you purchased that turned out far better than expected?"
and 2 guys were swearing that this "beard bib" for catching hairs while beard trimming was amazing.
a) didn't know this was a thing
b) it looks ridiculous
c) yup, if i had a beard and trimmed it, i'd seriously consider it now that i know it exists.
So over the next few weeks it's time for me to become a true #fediverse user and not just a Mastodork. The two areas I want to get into first are #pixelfed and the #kbin /#lemmy#threadiverse. I've started looking into both but would love opinions from experienced users about good instances, best practices, etc if anyone feels like sharing
21 users on https://dmv.pub! Let's get more! Anyone can join, but if you're in the #DMV#WashingtonDC#Maryland#Virginia area, I'd really love for you to join, contribute, and discuss local news and events! The more content, the better!
A lot of us are pretty new to the fediverse and we've arrived just in time to grapple with what is easily the biggest federation/defederation controversy ever to hit it. I've put this thread together to hopefully help communicate some of the more complex ideas that we're trying to get our heads around....
I will say the fact you can wander from different parties is a cool feature that really sets #ActivityPub apart for me.
I do think automatic blocks and defederation for any instance using proprietary extensions is a good idea. Its just asking for a worse UX and unpredictable bugs. I hate working with Windows’s versions of standards for the same reason.
I tried searching for that same group on a Friendica instance from a #Lemmy instance server by using the URL to the public page (on the Friendica server).
That didn't work either.
And according to WebFinger on that Friendica server, that is the rel="self" + type="application/activity+json" URL.
It looks like I can see what other Fediverse instances a #Lemmy server is currently federating with by following the "Instances" link in the bottom-right area of the page.
My Lemmy server is new, so it seems to be a small list currently. But it is notable that although most are Lemmy servers, I see Mastodon and kbin servers in there, too.
I would expect a Lemmy server that has been around longer and used much more to have a much longer list.
This time I tried to change the icon for my #Lemmy instance server, in the administrative section, using a PNG file this time (rather than an SVG file).
It worked.
But, don't forget to click the "Save" button at the bottom of the administration section, else it won't work.
...
And yes that is a custom Lemmy icon. I released a set of custom Fediverse icons as open-source (CC-BY) if you are interested: https://github.com/reiver/fediverse-icons
Since, for new user registrations, my #Lemmy instance server is running in "Require registration application" mode, I have to approve new users before they can do anything.
Approving a new users seems straightforward — just a click of an "Approve" button.
