I want to see absolutely no sensible and practical advice here. What programming language should I start vaguely and in a chill way teaching myself if I just want to experience something fun or elegant or interesting in and of itself, assuming I have no goal for using it to do anything really (outside of learning)

This week, we're hitting the #Blender3D shop floor for a big design that (I hope) will ultimately become a #VR space for a conference.

So far... it's a doughnut.

Is this to remind attendees that they better getting running around this track to burn off eating too many pastries? We shall see...

@elizabethtasker This is so freaking cool! 🤯

I just searched for something on and got a “DuckAssist” at the top of the results, right below the ads (of course).

It was basically a ChatGPT like message as if I’d typed the question there.

The Australian Voice to Parliament discussion must be infuriating to those in the Aboriginal community who would rather all this time and effort be directed toward treaty-making instead of what they see as the formation of yet another powerless advisory body.

Particularly when they share the 'No' vote with so many who are catastrophically opposite. 🧵

If you use Mastodon on desktop (as opposed to mobile), I cannot praise highly enough Phanpy https://phanpy.social/ #phanpy
It really cleans up my timeline, handles replies very nicely, and allows for a great "refresh" (view updates) experience.

Reading the comments under posts by the Australian Electoral Commission is incredibly depressing...

For one, people accusing the AEC of offering pencils at voting booths so that they can change people's votes.

How can anyone seriously believe that in a system they imagine to be entirely corrupt, the method of changing the votes would be to manually go through the votes of millions of people and tediously erase and re-write each ballot with the desired outcome?

@BenjaminNelan@mastodon.social avatar

Just a friendly reminder for all those Doctor Who viewers who feel that the show is 'rewriting history' because of its recent portrayal of Isaac Newton: the Earth wasn't formed around a Racnoss space ship, the moon isn't a giant egg, the fall of Pompei wasn't caused by the Doctor, Vincent van Gogh didn't travel to the future to see his work appreciated in an art gallery etc. (See also: entire show)

#DoctorWho isn't how we record history folks, it not even in the same part of the library.

YouTube has decided that if you don't have watch history enabled you don't get to use the home page anymore.

Don't know who okay'd this one because it's frankly an unintentional improvement over the regular experience, just wish they went a step further and got rid of 'Home' and 'Shorts' - send me straight to my subscriptions! That'll teach me!

They're trying to shoehorn you into giving express consent to collect the data they're already collecting.

Another dialog, this time what you are shown if you do not enable watch history. It just says, "Your watch history is off," followed by, "You can change your setting at any time to get the latest videos tailored to you."
On mobile the same messages take over the 'Home' page of the YouTube app. It now shows a clean searchbar at the top.

I could understand arguing for more public transport options, even the idea of cheaper point-to-point 'social uber' that's more affordable to folks (as idealistic as it is given our state government's recent development commitments.. tax payers bankrolling an expensive stadium that no who lives here actually asked for and adding highway lanes into a city with limited traffic capacity while the tracks of a once-existent railway system continues to grow weeds).

But to post a comment on an article about how bus fares are being halved arguing that their inconvenience to you demands that they should instead be privatised makes zzzeeerrrooo sense.

If you want a privatised Uber-model transport system... you have Uber?

Unless you mean having a privatised bus system... which also makes no sense. You want the same inconvenience you're complaining about and? Other states have tried privatising their bus services, it didn't go so great.

What even...

@darnell I'm hoping for an iPad Mini Pro... I find the Mini form factor easier to carry around, but having the performance display and LiDAR of the Pro line would make it sooo much better. Don't like my chances though.

The person who invented auto-playing videos on websites deserves to stub their toe and step on a piece of corner-upward LEGO every day as part of their morning routine.

However, a far more deserved recipient of this fate is the knobhead who then implemented this on mobile, decided it needed to take up 60% of the screen (leaving 39.99% for banner ads ofc) AND MADE IT FOLLOW YOU AS YOU SCROLL. 😤

Somehow only just found out you can target specific folders in using CSS snippets and add custom icons... heeeck yeah!

I know there's a plugin that can do this - but it caused issues with Obsidian sync because it stores SVG files in your vault. This snippet on the other hand is just using emojis.

It's unbelievable that cities being designed for people is being spun as a plot to "control you" while the demand of owning a car to the point that driver's licenses are the de facto form of identification is somehow... not.

Which has more freedom? A city where shops/food are within walking distance of your home or... a city designed for cars where shops are accessible only by having purchased an expensive product and being given permission to use said product? Permission which can be revoked.

What are #SelfHosted #SysAdmins using for reducing spam on email accounts hosted with #Linux these days?

#SpamAssassin is letting so much spam through on one particular account. Have looked into adding a cloud layer like #Mimecast, #ProofPoint, #Avanan etc but I'm probably too small scale for them.

Do the people working at honestly think that crap like this is what users want?

The search that they should be focusing on is Windows search. Listary and voidtool's 'Everything' are INFINITELY better and I couldn't get anything done without them.

The ONLY positive thing here is that unlike other features they've auto-installed, this one actually asks you up front if you want to use it and avoids using dark patterns.

What is it with this trend in comedy specials of doing orbiting shots around the comedian while they're on stage?

It makes it super obvious that you are now watching a re-enactment where the audience is pretending to hear the joke for the first time as the comedian pretends not to see the huge steadycam orbiting around their face.

Just stahp, it adds nothing and feels super phoney.
