(This is a book I've avoided re-reading for, oh, 20 years now... I really liked it when it came out, but I have a fear that it will have aged very poorly, especially given Miller's descent into madness)

Oklahoma hospital official:

'Oh, well, you know, in the case of a medical emergency, we would try to use the woman's body as an incubator to just try to keep the pregnancy going as long as possible'

Women don’t have rights? They’re just “incubators”?

Google today announced that the board has approved $70B of stock buybacks.

Stock buybacks are not considered a universal good: "Some economists and investors argue that using excess cash to buy up stocks in the open market is the opposite of what companies should be doing, which is reinvesting to facilitate growth (as well as job creation and capacity)."

At Google that might mean things like (for example) "Choosing not to fire 12,000 employees."

BoredomFestival,
@BoredomFestival@sfba.social avatar

@crschmidt <maury_lie_detector> "You said we needed layoffs and cutbacks due to 'different economic reality'. The $70B stock buyback and $226M bonus determined that was a lie."

The Texas Observer reports on Tx Dep't of Agriculture's new dress code: ”Employees are expected to comply with this dress code in a manner consistent with their biological gender" [sic] & will face "corrective action" if they don't.

This is literally what the Supreme Court held violated Title VII in . In 2020! In a Gorsuch opinion! I know the is in tatters, but seriously . . .

A programmer makes a scraping bot. Makes it opt-out. The tool floods numerous websites with aggressive bandwidth requests.

When asked to change how the bot works, he tells the people complaining—led by well-known developer Terence Eden—that they’re getting in the way of progress and that his bot should be treated like a person.

Can we talk about how incredibly awful this behavior is?

Some senators want to set a social media age minimum, banning kids under 13 and requiring parental consent for teens between 13 and 17. They've not said how they'll actually enforce it or verify ages, but it will probably entail more data gathering on kids

BoredomFestival,
@BoredomFestival@sfba.social avatar

@drewharwell it will entail gathering more information on everyone, which is the ultimate goal here

Cause: EU regulators move to force everybody to standardize on USB-C.

Effect: USB-C starts to lose the features that made it minimally acceptable in the first place.

I don't know if this is cause and effect or some kind of punishment from the nonexistent tech gods, but "unplug your cable and turn it over" is the new "push that boulder up the hill again". Enjoy your liver while you've got it.

Y'know, normally the whole C-Suite-Crazy-Pay thing just rolls right off my back, but I gotta say that doing a 12000-person layoff and then handing out a US$226M bonus to the CEO seems, uh, kinda fucked

This is hilarious. A engineer invented to make command line scripting easier with , because at a certain point scripts get too complicated and you need a Real Language.

https://github.com/google/zx/

This is exactly ’s use case from thirty-six years ago. But the kids want everywhere and would rather it take more work to convert their ascended scripts to a vastly different syntax.

https://github.com/google/zx/issues/581#issuecomment-1516573139

BoredomFestival,
@BoredomFestival@sfba.social avatar

@mjgardner My rule of thumb: if a bash script is too long to fit in my editor without scrolling... it should probably be converted to Python.
