6.2.1 broke shortcodes in Gutenberg themes seemingly randomly. Edit, looks like it affects only templates, someone had made a ticket: https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/58341

I don't like that Microsoft made PowerShell commandlet called "curl", because it is not the curl. It's some fake script that fetches URI.

One big problem is troubleshooting. Ask somebody to use Curl with Windows and when they type curl to the command line... And minutes later, wait? What are you using exactly, yes, it's the impostor curl provided by Microsoft, you need the REAL curl.

@Ciantic@twit.social avatar

It's a bit surprising that the VSCode team is still allowed to ship new UI functionality by default. I appreciate this feature, but I can imagine it can cause more "I hate it, how I turn it off" if enabled by default like now.

Here is a screencap of a new feature where function definition sticks to the top of the editor. Came today in when I updated. I like it myself!

When I'm looking at a backup tool, I want to know how to restore a single file in a given date and time.

Restic and Borg both makes this problematic because you have to first choose a snapshot, and so on. That is not what I want, I want simply:

"restore 2023-09-12T15:00Z /path/to/file"

No extra crap. I don't want to choose a snapshot etc, the tool should find the right snapshot closest to that time and give an option to copy or restore the file.

I must say, #Threads' way of doing tags looks a lot nicer. They are visually as links, with proper grammar, and no awkward jamming of words.

Attached screenshot is thread by @viticci demonstrating tags

(Side note, I won't be posting to there, as I have no follower herd that I need to feed, I understand that many in the know will be)

The fact that has ESPN, NBA, MLB, and NHL... already posting content is the biggest trouble ever has been in.

Ciantic, to threads

It's so funny, starts to look like old , without Elon Musk. It already has everyone from US politics (AOC, Trump), tech (from Jeff Bezos to all publications), and entertainment (Jon Bon Jovi...). It's almost like the US elite is shadow-banning Elon.

Ciantic, to threads

is turning on engagement turds. All of the content isn't available anymore without an account. If you browse someones feed from browser it just throws a text: "Get the Threads app to see more from..."

Ciantic, to bluesky
@Ciantic@twit.social avatar

I think and can coexist. They have different behaviors and different expectations.

Bluesky will be the aquarium of social media, as it doesn't, and probably can't have, any restrictions on post visibility. The pull-based model of Bluesky (just like RSS) sets the restrictions and makes everything public.

Mastodon allows silos, and is more blogger-friendly, with its embrace of standards like HTML. Longer form content like WordPress can thrive on here.

Okay @malwaretech's Threads bio wins the day:

Ordering replies in chronological order is not a good general solution, it amplifies reply-guys, and doesn't give good context for the reader.

Ideally, it should be configurable for each user, but here is a general idea, order of replies:

  1. Replies from people I follow
  2. Replies from people who follow me
  3. Other replies without questions
  4. Other replies with questions

This could be used as a basis for filtering as well, if you don't feel like answering, then hide all questions.

A few days ago I got a stellar Windows 11 update, it broke at least OneDrive, Google Chrome, Typora, and VSCode. I had to reinstall each program manually. What is odd is that OneDrive is bundled with Windows 11, so I had to get the Windows 10 OneDrive and install it on top of it. The mouse cursor also changed to a stock. Now I wonder what else will I discover is broken. Good job there kicking out that QA team by Microsoft.

I don't know why this post by @mosseri is not appearing in #Mastodon, but here is a screenshot.

What I want to highlight is the wording: "option available", which could suggest that federation is not automatic and the #Threads users must find some option to federate.

If I know something about options and masses, they never change their defaults. This would mean most Threads content would never reach Mastodon as nobody would bother to find the option.

For a company that made it's odd that launched without a web application. It has a rudimentary viewing ability but not a web app, you need a phone to use it.

If succeeds, it is not that dies, it is that dies.

The reason is that people who came to Mastodon are less likely to be wooed in by shiny new things from Meta.

However a lot of influencers who went to Bluesky are probably also Instagram users, why would they care if Threads is decentralized in the long run? Probably not.

Ciantic, to threads
@Ciantic@twit.social avatar

Can confirm that I was wrong. posts are searchable! There seems to be some delay (?), now I can see @zuck's first post in the search results using twit.social, but not in .social, it must be server-dependent when they start to appear.

The fact that Meta can leverage the verifications in might be the killer move.

I look at Zuckerberg's first thread, and it's not showing all replies publicly, it seems to have a preference for verified accounts.

Another installment of Gutenberg's really bad choices. By default, Gutenberg injects this gem:

.wp-block-post-title{ box-sizing:border-box; word-break:break-word }

Of course, this forced hyphenation from whatever location looks really awful. Who is making these choices?

I like that 's new search feature works for old posts too, as long as user has ticked the box.

Bluesky registrations are now open! https://bsky.social/about/blog/02-06-2024-join-bluesky

I have been posting primarily there for months now. It has an early Twitter vibe and UX, a hacking friendly protocol that will allow federation, and cool custom feed algorithms.

Ciantic,
@Ciantic@twit.social avatar

@filippo You are right, I like their protocol because it's pull based. However, has so much less programmer content. I tried searching Rust there, and crickets.

Same with coder conferences, the Mastodon gathered 10k posts vs 1k posts for (someone did a study)

I hope Bluesky succeeds but so far influencers have gone to Threads and geeks in Mastodon.

I tuned the a bit for myself. I really like that images are placed on a side, this allows eyes to follow the text column more easily for me. Though padding need some adjustment still.

Also, I don't like media cards, URLs are fine, and showing the action buttons aren't necessary until hovered.

US Senator Elizabeth Warren:
"“Green bubble texts are less secure. So why would Apple block a new app allowing Android users to chat with iPhone users on iMessage?"

A lot to unpack here. At the very least, this feels like foreshadowing of political trouble coming for Apple.

Ciantic,
@Ciantic@twit.social avatar

@davemark Warren has good intentions of course, but way Beeper works is fundamentally incorrect way to do "interoperability". There is no API for iMessages, and since they are using devices in their backroom, it was always very flaky approach. What if Apple adds a new requirement, e.g. scanning a face every now and then? It just bound to break. They built their business on sandcastles, and when the tide comes it washes away.

The thing I wonder is if I could move my following/follower graph over to a Mastodon instance and still get the bang for the buck I get on Threads. Discovery is much easier over the there, but it lacks the kind of focus you can get here.

Ciantic,
@Ciantic@twit.social avatar

@budgibson I'm still waiting for the day when @medium will start to compete in land. Currently they are doing the bare minimum, running mostly unmodified Mastodon. But surely they know that Mastodon's defaults are not what entices their main userbase to use https://me.dm server.

There are even low-hanging fruits, like using for the Medium server, as that is just copy-pasting the CSS to the admin panel. But they've not done that either.
