@KentuckyConjurer Hats. From earliest childhood they were psychologically protective, and then I got mildly obsessed with their decorative and practical qualities. I have dozens of them from skullcaps to newsboys to wide brim western hats.

I also have a tendency to buy multiples of any components I need for a project, because they’re cheaper by the dozen, and I might need spares. But there have been hundred of projects, so I have thousands of spare parts.

Stanley cups fulfill a basic task of holding and keeping water, something similar tumblers had been doing for decades without the social media hype.

So why are women standing in line for hours to buy them? And what does it mean when something made in the name of sustainability is sucked into a consumption frenzy?

Everyone interviewed for this story agreed that while is a component in the marketing and buying of products like these, it’s still not an excuse.

In other news, my brain reached for the word for "getting a thrill out of watching other people's private lives," and presented me with, "Entomology? I don't fucking know, I give up." And if you've never had an argument with your own brain, you don't know what the hell I'm talking about, I envy you, and get out of my house!

Cyrus,
@Cyrus@zirk.us avatar

@intransitivelie Solipsism is what the dwarves Brokk and Eitri did to Loki, perhaps the word you wanted was pugnacity.

Cyrus,
@Cyrus@zirk.us avatar

@intransitivelie Ah sorry but that’s when you live in the city of Mendocino. I wonder if you were thinking of chivalry?

Cyrus,
@Cyrus@zirk.us avatar

@intransitivelie Really, you were thinking about the owner of Epic Eats Temecula? Seems like it might have been something more commonplace, like perspicacity.

Cyrus,
@Cyrus@zirk.us avatar

@intransitivelie Clark? Yeah I think you’re right! She was memorable in The Gay Dog (1954).

Cyrus,

@intransitivelie The miming game where it’s like “two words, first word has two syllables”? Maybe but you don’t seem like the type who likes guessing at words. Must be schadenfreude.

Cyrus,

@KentuckyConjurer The House of 1k Corpses dvd had a lot of extra content, and I remember one of the cast or crew reverently going on about how much of a perfectionist and artist Zombie was, how he had a crystal clear vision and did everything in his power to make everything exactly right, and I made this face 😬. In one segment Haig (stoned out of his gourd) told a string of jokes that all had the same punchline: “Tiny fucked a stump!” Best part of the whole dvd.

My cleaner caught me and wanted to talk about the psychic she’s going to see to try to speak to her recently deceased daughter. I am against this, as a) I think it’s a load of bullshit and these people exploit the bereaved and b) she has been coping so much better and feeling more like herself again and I just worry this will stir up a lot of emotions again. I just said I don’t believe in it, but she clearly does (she also believes in palm reading and “angel numerology” whatever that is). This is quite surprising given that a few years ago she was a psychology undergraduate. I’m not sure she is cut out for academic rigour 😬

Cyrus,
@Cyrus@zirk.us avatar

@ouinne @purplepadma Yeah the premise of angel numbers is that each major angel in Christian mythology is associated with a number, so when you see that number it means that angel is watching over you. Like all other numerology, you can convert letters in text to numbers and do whatever math you can come up with to get the number you want.

A story Arno Penzias (RIP) sometimes told about getting the Nobel prize:

He realized, a day before he was to fly to Stockholm, that his tux no longer fit. So he went to the local tailor to have it altered. Guy says it will be a week. "But I really need it tomorrow!" Arno says.

"Why do you need it tomorrow?"

Arno, pulling the ace out of his sleeve, says, "I'm getting a Nobel prize."

Tailor looks at him skeptically. "Nobel prize? Come on. You're not Isaac Bashevis Singer. Get out of here."

Cyrus,
@Cyrus@zirk.us avatar

@mattblaze @spacehobo Reminds me tangentially of an anecdote from Yo Yo Ma. He gets into a taxi, carrying his violin case, and says take me to Carnegie Hall. The driver says Carnegie Hall, whattaya got a Stradivarius in there? Ma says uhh actually yes… Driver says oh sure bud, now you’re gonna try and say you’re Yo Yo Ma!

Hey bakers, explain.

I'm a reasonably competent baker. I make brioches, babkas, other fancy stuff. I have never once had a recipe that gave a mass measure of flour for which I didn't have to up the flour 10-20% or more (occasionally MUCH more) to get the desired texture. I'm currently fixing a donut recipe that says it wants 600g flour, but comes out as glop without adding ~100-150g more. The writer says the dough should be tacky.

Am I crazy?

Cyrus,
@Cyrus@zirk.us avatar

@wordshaper @spacehobo @ZachWeinersmith Hmmm I used to be a commercial bread baker for many years, and each kitchen was very particular about always/only using one specific brand/kind of flour, and every day we made adjustments to the water-flour ratio. The first batch would inform us, and we applied that adjustment to the rest of the batches that day. I don’t pretend to know all the factors at play, only what I described.

And of course... "Ant Fancy" magazine where you can keep up with all the latest winners of the international ant shows...

Cyrus,

@futurebird Imagine breeding the perfect fancy ant, only to have backyard breeders copy your basic idea and turn out untold numbers of hybrid ants without any attention to temperament or genetic problems, and then you see your fancy ants everywhere, biting children and destroying property. That’s the life of an ant breeder.

Finally a friend got us connected to a Best Western nearby, and the reservation line (based who knows where) assured us they had power, and charged us for a room. Course when we got there, no power! We made our way to the house of a friend in NE who had power and offered to put us up, and that’s where I’m writing from now. #portland #pdxtst

The facts are clear - the so-called "moral panic" around "organized" shoplifting rings was a smokescreen of deliberate disinformation pushed by massive corporate retail chains and politicians to back more draconian legislation aimed at attacking the poor in the aftermath of the George Floyd rebellion and the pandemic - amidst record price gouging, corporate profits, and ever expanding inequality.

https://www.vox.com/politics/24025691/shoplifting-scare-criminal-justice-reform

Cyrus,
@Cyrus@zirk.us avatar

@LaureM @igd_news @SKleefeld These do not contradict the story IGD presented. It is simultaneously true that North Portland is impoverished and underserved, the city center has a lot of graffiti and hardship, AND that there has been a national campaign by corporations to create a narrative of “extreme shoplifting” so they can close stores that try to unionize. Most of the companies who used the shoplifting excuse have since walked back that claim.

This is my sweet little Aussie we rescued back in October. She was only 5-1/2 lbs and has doubled in weight. Her hair has grown in beautifully.

We are still in home training and not at professional training classes yet. We needed to build more trust between us and let her decompress. She's now my little goblin and loves going everywhere with me, including the woods and down by the river.

She's deaf, and whether or not she consistently follows hand signals is up for question. If there's a treat in hand, there's a quick response to hand signals. No treat/no action. LOL

Close up of white tiny Australian Shepherd. She has long white curls around her face and smudged black around her eyes. Her white sherpa hood rests behind her head. She's staring off to the right.
