@Mrfunkedude even as a child I thought it was super weird that they had Spider Man. Like even without understanding the legal ramifications, I knew something was up.

My buddy Stuart mailed me a of Mark Guiliana’s LP Mischief that he’d bought in at one of Mark’s shows.

It’s cool as hell.

But I no longer own a cassette deck!

Question: are the the kids playing these on cassette decks and in car stereos like we did?

Photo of a cassette of Mark Guiliana’s LP, Mischief.

Cyrus,

@serpicojam hipster kids, yes. I first saw the cassette resurgence around harsh noise and black metal scenes, but then it spread to other genres that appeal to extreme nerds.

Has anyone got a layperson’s (eli5) explanation of the difference between mastodon and ?

drewphish, to random

I enjoyed yesterday's JRAD talk but there's a line of thinking I've seen variations of over the years that I never understand.

(And I promise this isn't aimed at any particular people - just an observation)

It's essentially why would you listen to JRAD when you can just listen to the actual Dead?

JRAD uses the Dead songbook simply as a starting point on which to build musical conversations. Sometimes it checks a lot of the boxes of the original version + sometimes it is wildly different. 1/x

Cyrus,
@Cyrus@zirk.us avatar

@mrcompletely @drummmerandy @drewphish absolutely! What excites me most about the phrasing used by great Cuban-inspired singers and soloists is they imply much more of the rhythm than they vocalize/play, with many beats left as rests.

Did you know that Majorettes were originally meant to mock the pretentious and overly fancy Prussian military? It’s a Carnival tradition that has been severed from its once subversive roots. Funny that they are most popular in “pro military” places in the US!

Cyrus,
@Cyrus@zirk.us avatar

@futurebird happens too often: the butt of a satire doesn’t get that they’re the joke, so they embrace the parts that look like them, but without the meaning. “Born in the USA”

@Adam_Cadmon1 @doctorjaymarie it’s a hothead instance. I follow and like several people on there, I’m kind of a hothead myself; but I also see a lot of unnecessary drama and fight picking from there.

There is an ARG called "Welcome Home" and it's styling itself after lost media from the 1970s. BUT

I can't even start to get in to it with this art style. I can't put my finger on why exactly, but there is just no way these illustrations are from the 70s.

Is it because they don't look like they have ever been scanned? Or is it that some of the style choices are just too contemporary?

Maybe it's just that there are too many colors-- the gradients are too smooth...

Cyrus,
@Cyrus@zirk.us avatar

@futurebird there are too many style cues from anime in there, the colors are wrong, and the lines/strokes are clearly not pen or pencil.

IMO the best “lost media from the 70s” is by Scarfolk Council: https://mastodonapp.uk/@scarfolk/110292448981296776

rob, to animals

I haven’t seen any pet accounts on Mastodon yet.

You know the ones I’m talking about… social media accounts that appear to be owned by a dog / cat / <insert animal type here>

Are they not a thing, or have I simply not stumbled upon one yet?

Cyrus,
@Cyrus@zirk.us avatar

@rob seems like most people on here are content to post pics of their pets without pretending to be the pet. No offense meant to those who do.

Sammael99, to music French
@Sammael99@imaginair.es avatar

Dizzy Gillespie - Afro. I knew of Dizzy Gillespie, I've heard and loved a number of his compositions, but I hadn't until yesterday listened to a Gillespie record. I hesitated, because I have an ambiguous relationship to Afro-Cuban jazz which I all too often find too tame. No such thing in Afro. The music is vibrant, full of pent-up energy. The percussions drive the whole thing to a fever, the harmony is sparse, often only implied by the bass, and Gillespie's trumpet is then free to soar above that boiling lava. The first three tunes form a suite. They're quite sophisticated with a fuller band and more harmonic texture. The last three are sparse as hell and get my vote for sure. Astounding.

Cyrus,
@Cyrus@zirk.us avatar

@Sammael99 a lot of “Afro Cuban jazz” was made to appeal to white consumers of easy listening music. Dizzy was an exception partly due to his own artistic fire, and partly because he partnered with Chano Pozo, a hard core Cuban santero who spoke no English and only wanted to appeal to his orishas, who don’t respond to easy listening.

Cyrus,
@Cyrus@zirk.us avatar

@mrcompletely @Sammael99 beautiful stuff! With a name like Grupo Elegua they better not be fooling around, and they aren’t. Also a great example of how the music can be slower and gentler, yet still deep rooted and impassioned.

Cyrus,
@Cyrus@zirk.us avatar

@mrcompletely @Sammael99 yes! As I understand it, the US embargo meant Cuban artists couldn’t tour North America, but they could tour Africa! There they were warmly embraced, especially in the west, and a whole genre sprung up of West African musicians playing Cuban style music! It’s phenomenal and fascinating.

@debonairetoast @diymusicchat I already mentioned a religiosity example for me, but 100% of bands/collabs need to deal with what degree that intoxicants affect their group’s ability to function and feel right. If it’s cool, it’s cool, but for a lot of people there’s a cutoff point. I didn’t invite one guy back after his second jam with us because he was clearly more interested in getting high with some bros than he was in learning new music.

@debonairetoast @diymusicchat it’s a good topic! I was invited to try out for an established band with several albums and tours under their belt, so I checked them out, and there were so many red flags it could have been Mao’s birthday. I don’t want to list them all for reasons but one biggie was their lyrics were very Christian religious.
