One skill I've learned in the pandemic is biting my tongue.

Yesterday, I ran into an old friend. I worked with her husband 20 years ago. I asked how he was.

“He's been sick for ten days, but we're going to a concert tonight.”

I long ago learned I would not hold my tongue when speaking to many about COVID risks, but trying to be helpful with unsolicited advice to individuals is always treated with hostility. I don't go to concerts because people like this do.

@soc_i_ety @petergleick why do only working people deserve aid? That’ll just keep most of the homeless homeless & poor, poor. Disabled, elderly, stay at home parents, laid off, hurt on the job, veterans, mentally ill, striking, unemployed, racially profiled, fresh outta school, helping family… there are many reasons people can’t work, & they deserve help too.

When you show your citizens they don’t matter & their future is futile & strictly to cater to the rich & corrupt legislators, your country is doomed because they can just make their career goal to leave (like mine). Maybe why they’re doubling down on authoritarianism… they’ll have to force the youth to stay.

I think prior to Trump there was hope for Americans & young people thought they could aspire to greatness. Currently our youth, around me, don’t think that. They aspire to leave. When your career goal is to expatriate, it makes it a lot more practical. There are a dozen countries that offer free uni to international students. There’s no reason to stay here.

I have no ancestral lands. I have no family. I would emigrate, by choice, in a hot second. I try to put myself in others’ shoes & understand perspectives. I don’t understand why it’s offensive to think young people, including marginalized ones, are smart to plan a future abroad.

I was told black people cant leave because of racism. I put a map of places less racist than the US. Now I’m an offensive racist that can’t be bothered with. 🤷‍♀️ Okay. Well, they aren’t the ones planning to leave then I guess. I don’t ask my kid what races her classmates are that she tells me about.

@KatLS @hannu_ikonen I have a connective tissue disorder. Connective tissue is in every part of the body, in multiple ways. It’s fully systemic & presents differently in everyone. It also causes POTS & MCAS, like Covid. Doctors are so unprepared. They truly don’t know how to deal with multi system disorders. When they don’t understand, they don’t try, they don’t research. They just don’t bother. People will be dismissed & left disabled. Doctors don’t do multisystemic

My "respectable jobs" have been so soul sucking and violent that I no longer judge criminals, drug dealers, porn performers, the unemployed, those who do not want to work at all, those who cheat benefits. There is no one I can judge. When you want to kill yourself because working almost full time doesn't pay rent or food and you feel demeaned daily, how can you not love people trying a different path in life?

@gentrifiedrose When our lawmakers make their living by cheating the people, while yelling about people taking advantage & forcing slave labor, all with no health care, education, food, or worker protections, it loses the fear factor. The people taking the most advantage of aid are ALWAYS people who have enough & feel entitled to more!!
