I completely understand why someone wouldn't want to post a photo of themself as an avatar, but it helps me communicate better with a person when I know what they look like.

Listen I know we need a lot of variables in math. A single alphabet wonโ€™t due. So capital and lower case letters can be different variables. I can even roll with the idea that letters of the same case in different typefaces can be distinctโ€” but, I still find the abusive use of C in Hoggs Mathematical Statistics a little extremeโ€ฆ we couldnโ€™t get more distinct typefaces? How many students have cried because you did this, Hogg? (i otherwise love this textbook itโ€™s so much fun) /math rant

@drcaberry I know the feeling. I normally don't take attendance, but as a consequence of something I'm trying in one of my courses, I can infer who's attending and who isn't. I then ran the numbers against the first exam score, with exactly the result you'd expect. When I showed this in class, I prefaced it with "I have a feeling that those of you I'm talking to already know the value of showing up..."

Proposal: Use wind power technology for energy storage. When you have excess power, you run a really large fan, increasing the overall amount of wind so you can draw it back as electricity later using a windmill. Using a similar principle you could also use wind for power transmission, by pointing the fan in a particular direction

My constant experience with Python over the last ~16 years is I start writing it and it's like, wow, this is so easy, this is great! And then I run my program, and invariably it fails with an inscrutable error/exception 4 layers deep in someone else's library, code I know nothing aboutโ€” in this case, a wav file library claiming that the number 960 is "not a valid shape"โ€” and I realize that maybe I actually hate Python

@mcc My best story about the importance of typing was a piece of code I wrote several years ago to help me manage a largish course. There was a bug in part of the code that paired students for group projects. I couldn't be bothered to hunt down the bug because I was the only person using it, and the erroneous output was easy enough to catch.

One summer as I was adding functionality, I decided to also add type inferences. Immediately my IDE said "Hey, you've got a bug here. You're assigning a Duck object to a Goose variable." (not the real class names)

I have never seen the NCIS tv shows but I saw a promo for one of the NCIS tv shows and one of the NCIS guys was chasing what I guess is a criminal and shouted "Freeze, NCIS!" and it occurred to me that if there were no NCIS tv shows or if you had never seen an NCIS tv show or promo for such a show and somebody shouted "Freeze, NCIS!" at you, most people would shout back "I have no idea what that is!"
