I'm looking for a few guest speakers for a couple of my software engineering courses at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The first course is for first-semester students, so they'll be interested in learning what software engineers do. The second course is a mentorship & leadership course, so those topics will be people-skill related.

You do not have to be in Lincoln, or even Nebraska, to be a guest speaker. If you're close enough, you're certainly welcome to be an in-person guest speaker, but we've had remote guest speakers in the past, and I expect we'll continue to have remote guest speakers for many years to come.

Here's a link to let me know that you're interested: https://forms.office.com/r/j7FLmFX3vs

I'm going to boost this now & again over the next couple of days to try to catch people in different time zones, and I'm hiding it behind a CW so it's not too annoying to people who see it more than once.

Please feel free to boost it, too!

Answered a question on Hacker News about using ChatGPT for programming tasks with a bunch of my own examples... https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37126182#37127206

Comments so far include "If someone on my team was doing things this unusually they’d probably be let go" and "sorry but these examples are not impressive at all and by no means a representative of any serious programmer's workload"

A lot of people out there are absolutely determined not to take the practical utility of this stuff seriously!

A short, really good post explaining a "Punch Line" method of status reporting that conveys the important info first, and makes it harder for people to obfuscate what's really going on.

Similar to the "inverted pyramid style" of journalistic reporting.

Includes an entertaining anecdote and is definitely worth the time to read

DocBohn,
@DocBohn@techhub.social avatar

@masukomi When I was in the Air Force, we had the BLUF. While everything after wasn't necessarily quite so structured, you wrote the Bottom Line Up-Front so that we knew how to read everything that followed. Today I teach it to my students as the TL;DR line.

While not an official thing, I also developed a style I called "The General's BlackBerry". It came after I noticed that the general I was working with on a particular project had his BlackBerry's font cranked up to display maybe 32 characters wide by 5 lines tall (I'm not sure about the exact numbers, and it doesn't matter). So I started writing emails with his device in mind. Short sentences. Everything he needs now in one or two short paragraphs after the BLUF. Anything that can wait until he got to his laptop after that. I teach that to my students as the "smartwatch email".

Hundreds of years ago, writers of alphabetic language used "Scriptio continua" -- there were no spaces between words

Eventually we realized that chunking the words with whitespace would dramatically aid comprehension

Here's an essay wondering why we so often fail to do this today ...

... with numbers, many of which -- in the commercial world -- are still delivered in Scriptio continua: https://3quarksdaily.com/3quarksdaily/2023/07/digital-age-why-our-numbers-need-updating.html

DocBohn,
@DocBohn@techhub.social avatar

@clive absolutely! Digit separators are one of the things (but not the only thing) that I'm looking forward to in C23.

As I noted a couple of years ago when reading @thephd's update on the process:

"The digit separators might even make me less skeptical when students insist that 0b011111111000000000000000000000 is more readable than 0x7F800000"

What's funny is that for all the people who agreed with me, no one noticed that the binary literal has only 30 bits instead of 32. Which emphasizes the point (and was also an actual student error).

DocBohn,

@Alice yeah, I know. Seems I'm slow on the uptake.

That, and my immediate word association with Alf is "mustard". It's because of the "Alf Tales" cartoon. They had an episode that mirrors the John Henry legend, but with chefs. There's a conversation:
"You said I couldn't cut the mustard!" / "You can't cut the mustard. You spoon the mustard!"

I used to say that if I could have a minor superpower, I'd want to know where lost things are. ("Honey, where are my car keys?" "Oh, they've slipped down the back of the couch again. And you left the receipts for the dry cleaning in the top draw of your desk at work.") These days I'd trade that for being able to revise conversations—to retroactively not have put my foot in my mouth or forgotten someone's name. I wonder what minor superpower I'll want if I live another twenty years?
