Another day of struggling with being the sole COVID avoider in my local circle and the thoughts “screw it, if you can’t beat them, join them” creep in mighty powerfully. But thankfully a covid cautious friend from afar sent me this article to read. It can happen to anyone… https://hospitalnews.com/an-er-doctors-experience-with-long-covid-my-symptoms-seemed-endless/

GeorgiaOnMyMind,

@NilaJones @thepoliticalcat @AutisticMumTo3 @sabik I found this - but perhaps more disturbing is the fact that they are shutting down this website this summer. Not sure why that would happen.

"Its not how COVID affects the brain, its how COVID effects changes in inflammation in the body"

Just wait until all these serious science authors realize the brain is part of your body.

((Cant make these headlines up.

COVID can be neurotropic, has affinity for dopaminergic neurons & the olfactory bulb.

It also fucks up mitochondria & the immune system.

All can be true.))

I went to a store today that requires masking!!! And while they didn’t mandate it (and the masks at the door with medical (I think because of cost)) there was only 1 person without a mask. And it was busy. Next time I looked over, the person had a mask on. I think they just ignored the sign (as so many signs are ignored these days) but when they realized they were the ONLY person unmasked they got right on it. 💃 Such great peer pressure for safety on display!

Went to the dentist today. Only client in a mask. Dentist was wearing a baggie blue, with gaps everywhere as large as my open mouth. She did asked about my N95 and was honestly interested in it. She asked me where she could buy them.

A dentist. Not knowing where to buy PPE. After 4 years of this crap. Of course we can't buy them anywhere irl.

For my Canadian friends, just visit 3M's website, search for "9210". On the right side there will be a section for where to buy, choose online options. Pick the seller you prefer.

Or visit https://canadastrongmasks.ca/ for a wide variety of choices. Or https://donatemask.ca/ !

Gave that info to the dentist who seemed glad about it. Happy to have shared that info, but how much of a failure PH is if even dentist don't have useful and up to date info...

GeorgiaOnMyMind,

@ALoneMasker can you all get readi masks in Canada? I use them for dentist and cover my nose, and for full face at the hairdresser. https://readimask.com/

I have posted here a while back (can’t find post) about a couple up the street from my mother in law who she is friends with.

They are older and had a couple Covid infections. They were quite sick late summe(?) with not covid (tm).

Since that illness they’ve really not been back to normal.

One was winded raking leaves, and they decided with their doctor it was allergies. The other has had 3ish bouts of “food poisoning” and a week or so ago was in bed wearing winter clothes.

Today they went to the ER becuase the one with new onset leaf allergies can’t breathe.

It’s breaking my heart alll of this denial. We could be doing so much better.

GeorgiaOnMyMind,

@maleve It’s so frustrating hearing about a friend talk about how “embarrassed” he is because he got Covid because he’s so “Careful” - his wife didn’t get it - it must be the times he went to the gym without her (no mask). They don’t wear asks anywhere (I’m hoping on the plane or he just gifted it to his seat mates). He thinks since he doesn’t go to large parties, concerts or big venues he’s being careful.(He just went to a play, not sure if he masked, but it certainly wasn’t an N95. He doesn’t understand that just because his wife is testing negative doesn’t mean she’s not asymptomatic. His wife thinks since she’s testing negative, while he’s still positive, she’s safe to visit a friend who has just stopped cancer treatments because they aren’t working. I just don’t get it. These are highly intelligent people - or they used to be…

What are some tests we should request for my husband who is having continuous LC issues 2 months+ past his second infection in August?

First infection in 2022 had lasting heart issues (but not this time). Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

This is what Long Covid can look like.

Husband takes the car to the airport, knowing, high probability, he’s going to fly into another airport on his return to visit friends (why not enjoy life in the covid world before coming home and quarantining?). He usually takes a Lyft to the airport so I didn’t pay attention to the fact that he left in the car. Now he is stuck 60 miles away, needs to take a train home AND THEN take a Lyft to get to the airport.

His brain doesn’t work so well anymore. It’s definitely here and there that it’s noticeable, not noticeable to others for the most part, so again I look like the crazy one avoiding Covid like it’s the plague. Make it make sense!

GeorgiaOnMyMind, to random

I’ve had two doctors mention to me this past week the importance of maintaining good brain health to avoid dementia and Parkinsons-yet neither one mentions avoiding Covid. One was surprised I’ve avoided it this long and didn’t understand how I could maintain that since it’s everywhere.

What am I missing? Why isn’t Covid in their discussions for brain health (and Parkinsons)?

Gotta go for an MRI.
Trying out a strapless, MRI safe mask.

GeorgiaOnMyMind,

@Scienceisnotopinions @douglaspynn These readi masks are awesome. They don’t move around when you do and you know you have a seal because they move when you breathe. I use them for haircuts and likely will on flights if you have to sleep because they won’t move (trick is putting it on while holding your breathe after going through security. )

Fighting with my immunocompromised wife who just had covid and is still dealing with heart pains yet just needs to be with her covid careless family for the next four days regardless.

An unexpected death in the family has caused my wife so much grief she started crying all day in class, consequently getting covid even while westing a mask.

She now submits us both to many hours of close contact with a large group of people who couldn’t even be bothered to mask before our visit.

Most of them have been sick three weeks now without testing!

I will be masked all Christmas, and will be one of the only two persons still doing so.

I don’t like our odds and unfortunately have lost this fight after 3 years of avoiding and contact with covid friendly family gatherings.

My time us up, the world continues despite me being the only left. I’m living a total nightmare in this pandemic, if only people cared.

We literally had to extend our visit for an extra dinner added with more than 12 people on the last day of our visit.

My concerns have been met with accusations that I’m just living in fear. This from my wife who is currently covid chokng in the hallway as she packs her things. A fucking nightmare.

I forgot to add, Happy Holidays?!

GeorgiaOnMyMind,

@rhtunstall I’m definitely experiencing this as well. A friend said, come walk with us, masked, everyone will be so happy to see you and if you’re in a mask they’d rather see you than not. This is not the impression I’m getting. They avoid me, say a perfunctory hello and then walk with others in the group. I am a reminder that Covid might not be so safe… they don’t want to see that.

I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this with your wife. My husband also says he will mask and then doesn’t. I go for 7 days quarantining since covid takes longer to show up these days and lasts longer. Good luck. I’m glad you’re still taking care of yourself as best you can.

Driving past a city where a dead friend’s child goes to school and we can’t visit because . I really hate this timeline.

I used this technique on a 10yo who normally HATES testing. She giggled, said it felt funny and tickled. I highly recommend showing this video to young and old. https://youtu.be/sE-DBdz1itw?feature=shared

I feel like there's been a recent shift of the messaging coming from the corporate press etc. From Never Talk About Covid to Never Worry About Covid But Maybe Wear a Mask. I guess that's progress?

GeorgiaOnMyMind,

@PacificNic @Geoffberner I’ve been bringing some KN95s while we shop for a car and they are all grateful to have a better mask than their cloth or medical. I hear “A lot of people are sick right now”.

They take it right off when not in my presence but it’s more thoughtful than I was prepared for and EVERYONE mentions how everyone is sick right now.

Happy Holidays to all those preventing the spread of during the huge wave this season. I’m grateful for your thoughtfulness and kindness in preventing further harm to others. I wish there were more like you ❤️.

My mother called me to tell me the two (70 yr old)surgeons who just visited her (when she had symptoms but COVID tests were negative) that all you had to do with covid was “wash hands, wash hands, wash hands” and she believed it 💯). They are from Florida. They’ve never had covid. 🙄😡

From Violet Blue’s news letter - I’m hoping the link works. From the Dec 14 Grand Rounds Recording - don’t love Dr Waechter so much anymore but this is So helpful https://medicine.ucsf.edu/dom_grand_rounds

I learned that the metformin study for LC was done before vaccines and antivirals (still seem promising) and that these amazing doctors still mask for themselves AND their patients!!! ❤️

Update on Long Covid

“I’ll stop masking when the world’s leading researchers on Long Covid do. Prof. Akiko Iwasaki: ‘I’m still wearing my mask everywhere.’ Michael Peluso, MD: ‘I’m very strict, actually, about masking.’ Ziyad Ai-Aly, MD: ‘Yes, primarily because of Long Covid. I don’t want Long Covid.'” [UCSF Covid Grand Rounds, via A]

My girls are coming home for Christmas to have one last good Christmas Day with their grandma who has Alzheimer’s. Problem is SIL gave grandma covid and grandma is still positive. Probably would be fine if we have a few negative days before Christmas except the boyfriend never has tested positive (not sure how much he’s testing) so can’t be assured he isn’t asymptomatic at dinner. Both SIL and boyfriend think/thought they are immune to COVID since she hadn’t gotten it until recently.

So I’m canceling the gathering, I get to be the bad guy yet again, I’m so over this.

My favorite 3M Aura mask - not great to reuse 😩
Don’t love this - from Ruth Ann Crystal MD newsletter:

1/26/24 JAMA: Fit Test Failure During N95 Respirator Reuse and Extended Use https://buff.ly/3u2J5VN

In this cohort study of ED HCWs practicing N95 reuse, fit failure occurred in 38.7% of masks after 1 shift over all with:
26% fit failure with Dome N95 respirator mask
28% fit failure with Duckbill N95 respirator mask
61% fit failure with Trifold N95 respirator mask (like Aura by 3M)

@Brad So sad that after this holiday that 1 in … number is going to go even lower. It’s mind boggling how many people I know are going to large gatherings. It makes me so sad for humankind.

I'm a single, older person, living on my own, with a very basic diet. I don't often buy sweets or ice creams as I don't like them. I occasionally treat myself to a packet of Digestive biscuits. I very rarely buy meat or fish. My weekly shop at Coles used to be around $50-55.
Today?
$94.76
Price gouging.
Nothing more. Nothing less.

GeorgiaOnMyMind,

@vickietorious @kaffando they just did an expose here in NC and the Ingles ceo and chair made millions more in bonuses the last two years. Definitely taking advantage and raising prices just to line the pockets of the very top. So frustrating.
