Netanyahu is almost certainly a sociopath, as are Trump and Putin. Everything they touch, dies. Netanyahu may destroy as well as Gaza if he and his fellow extremists are not stopped.

"Israel’s actions in Gaza could even lead the EU to debate “whether we continue with this strategic relation or not”.

@Greengordon maybe we need to examine how we've built a culture where narcissists or sociopaths or "people who will stop at nothing to get what they want" have risen to the top of nearly every organization everywhere. Maybe we need to study how did other cultures build safeguards against this?

This I'd like to highlight this cover of my song "Unlistenable Song" by Canada's best living songwriter, Rae Spoon. It's a better version than I could have done in a million years. Rae made it beautiful. https://geoffberner.bandcamp.com/track/unlistenable-song-a-geoff-berner-cover-by-rae-spoon

It's not new or strange for a Republican Presidential nominee to use treason as a tool to grab the White House. Reagan and Nixon obtained help from other countries' governments in order to get elected, in ways that got Americans killed. That's not a conspiracy theory. It's a matter of public record. https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2014/06/yes-nixon-scuttled-the-vietnam-peace-talks-107623/

Anybody out there know if there's scientific work that's been done on human disease-seeking behavior? At this point, I feel drawn to describe the over-culture's attitude towards Covid and public health in general as not just a failure to take precautions, but disease-seeking. Maybe there are discoverable insights into how human disease-seeking behavior works? Maybe that knowledge might help us turn things around?

Don't worry. They've got the same plan for Avian Flu as they had for Covid. And you think that worked. So you're golden.

It's amazing reading all these nytimes and other articles saying "Why are so many kids absent from school nowadays? Must be a new culture of laziness. Probably lockdowns. Or phones. We definitely didn't give a generation Long Covid, because that's not something we're permitted to discuss."

This is literal doom, but I actually find it mildly encouraging that our security and government services are being told the truth about the current state of the nation, society, and world. This is the kind of report that every single politician needs to not only read but really understand.

Quotes below:

"The situation will probably deteriorate further in the next five years, as the early effects of climate change and a global recession add their weight to the ongoing crises"

"accelerate the decline in living standards that the younger generations have already witnessed compared to earlier generations"

"the difference between the extremes of wealth is greater now in developed countries than it has been at any time in several generations"

"Law enforcement should expect continuing social and political polarization fueled by misinformation campaigns and an increasing mistrust for all democratic institutions"

"Access to [big data] will allow private entities to develop the means to exercise undue influence over individuals and populations at an unprecedented level"

"In the wake of COVID-19, Canada's governments have normalized operating during a respiratory pandemic... the damage to the economy and to the social fabric of the nation is ongoing"

The Vancouver cherry blossom trees are a memorial to Japanese Canadian soldier boys lost in the first world war. Give a thought to the foolish reasons we're still given for throwing children away, as the petals fall.

I love Canadian state funerals. I love that we, the people, pay the state media to spend a bunch of our money pretending to us that someone spent his life doing things for us, when in fact he did them to us.

Any time a politician sets a future goal beyond the scope of their current term of office, such as "carbon neutral by 2033" or whatever, it means they don't want to do it, but they want you to think they do. That's all it means. It's not a "good start". It's not "better than nothing". And beware of people who say "At least they're acknowledging the problem somehow." It's not policy at all. It's just a lie, and its purpose is to buy time for more harm to be done.

Geoffberner,
@Geoffberner@zeroes.ca avatar

@christianschwaegerl @anlomedad no. No no no no no no. Companies do as little as they can get away with, for as long as they can, from week to week. They don't believe these "goals" are real any more than I do. That's why they're doing it this way.

Geoffberner,
@Geoffberner@zeroes.ca avatar

@christianschwaegerl @anlomedad selling carbon credits is one of the worst aspects of climate denial masquerading as action.

Geoffberner,
@Geoffberner@zeroes.ca avatar

@christianschwaegerl @anlomedad as far as I know, none of the countries in the EU have met their inadequate climate goals so far? Have I got that wrong?

Geoffberner,
@Geoffberner@zeroes.ca avatar

@christianschwaegerl @anlomedad and what will be the effects, in terms of mass death, should the EU and other polluting groups only reach its "target" of "net zero by 2050"? This will be catastrophic. Correct?

Geoffberner,
@Geoffberner@zeroes.ca avatar

@christianschwaegerl @anlomedad really? It seems like the numbers you're citing express quite clearly how unseriously the EU takes the situation. I totally accept that we differ on that. Thanks for the time and effort you're putting into this. If everybody was as committed to changing this as you, we could fix this problem.

Geoffberner,
@Geoffberner@zeroes.ca avatar

@christianschwaegerl @anlomedad let's be real. That reduction was a result of the loss of gas supplies as a result of the war in ukraine, and the short term emergency policy moves made to respond to that. Not the 2050 goals.

Geoffberner,
@Geoffberner@zeroes.ca avatar

@strypey @norightturnnz that sounds right to me. That's more precise.

I'd certainly like to know what the U.S. military bigwigs plan to do if Trump keeps his promise, declares himself dictator on day one and starts ordering Homeland Security to grab people off the streets. Maybe the American press will ask them at some point.

@pete_wright @tess do you see? In the Globe and Mail article above, the white loggers use the G and M to make it look like Indigenous people wanted Ferry Creek logged. But they didn't. Their bought leaders did.

@msquebanh @pete_wright @tess it's a bit sad that actual grown up people don't understand that this is basically how Canada works.
