EDITED: One of journalism's consistent flaws is ignoring relevant context.
Case in point is this NY Times story about a judge tossing out a new federal regulation limiting extortionate credit card late fees.
Here's the context the Times didn't care to include: The financial companies went forum shopping, and landed one of their favorite Trump-appointed judges, who (to his credit) objected to the process, but then predictably ruled against the administration.
@dangillmor@briankrebs That’s a rather uncharitable characterization of Pittman. He was career DOJ before getting on the bench and his rulings, while leaning conservative, tend to follow precedent. Still a bad outcome, but not nearly or unilaterally his fault.
@zachleat@eleventy It would grow even more if the tutorials/documentation were clearer! Had to switch to #Jekyll because I couldn’t figure out how to get a theme to work.
@Free_Press Can we take a moment to appreciate the bizarre guy in the center frame? Is that salmon-colored socks in tan work boots, and one of his hands is completely wrapped in gauze? WTF is going on?
I don't think certain lawyer person realized an ordinary citizen, regardless of education level, isn't even capable of understanding whatever it was he was trying to explain to me today about what a juror is supposed to be doing.
I am pretty sure it was not, in fact, meaningful English. But, if it were, it was not English anyone but a lawyer could understand. Therefore it is absolutely USELESS to a juror.
That this conundrum would not occur to a lawyer does not surprise me!
#Brits of Mastodon aka #Britstodon why the insane hate for the #BBC? Sure it’s boring. Sure it’s safe. But putting it on the same level of evil as the world’s worst? Isn’t that a bit much? I hate #tea but you don’t see me comparing it to arsenic.
It's nice to see some pushback against those who want to kick the #BBC out of the #fediverse. Who demand their instance be blocked. Who berate them for platforming voices that are insufficiently concerned about trans issues sometimes etc.
Some of us have derisively called this attitude #woke for a while now. It's not empathy as much as #virtuesignaling that won't really help anyone. We think trying to remove some people/groups from the conversation is appropriately called #cancelculture. FYI.
@wjmaggos This is the duel-edged sword of federated social media. Instead of one monolithic entity making decisions around who gets a voice, there are thousands of little entities making those decisions. Platforms like Reddit avoided this problem because Reddit was neutral and the subreddits had autonomous moderation teams. If someone didn’t like the moderation on a subreddit they could simply split, join a new subreddit and carry on with the same username. Not so w/ fediverse.
@wjmaggos I just wish there was better portability with usernames on here. That way, I could migrate to that Goldilocks server if I wasn’t happy with the moderation on my current server.
There's famously a bunch of Swedish words in English, for example "smörgåsbord", "ombudsman" and seemingly being merged now is "fika",
which is fine I suppose, but there's a much more important word:
"politikerförakt", contempt for politicians.
@timkmak Unpopular opinion but the only thing that matters is user engagement. The platform with the biggest active user base is the most effective. Mastodon is technically superior in so many ways but that’s all betamax to Threads’ vhs.
