For me, right to to repair isn't just about ewaste, and preventing corporate gouging.

It's about mental health. Being able to fix your gadgets is therapeutic. Empowering. Good for the soul.

In a world full of complex technology it's easy to feel small and helpless. And maybe I'm too much of an idealist, but I think that if everyone could experience the joy of fixing or modifying a gadget now and then we'd all be a little more open minded, a little more daring. A little harder to push around.

This is what the spread of managerialism has done in both the private and public sectors. A culture of "pass the blame on and cover your arse", not " find out what went wrong so it doesn't happen again" - which is the only way to run anything.

Hurrah! It was an absolute knife-edge, but Highland Council has finally approved the end of most through-traffic on Inverness’s main city centre thoroughfare. This despite selfish bluster from motorists, ignorant ranting from businesses who don’t understand where their customers come from, and vile propaganda from local press.

There’s still a distance to go, and no doubt legal action, but there’s hope (and clean air) for once.

@peterbrown @simonvarwell @pauloldhamsnp @Peternimmo I remember the High Street as a through route; reopening it to traffic is possibly the most idiotic idea relating to the centre of Inverness I've ever heard . Which is saying a lot.

JMacfie,
@JMacfie@mastodon.scot avatar

@simonvarwell @pauloldhamsnp @Peternimmo @peterbrown it shouldn't be impossible to allow access for disabled and still pedestrianise the entire centre of town. It would create such a wonderful public space (in a way that Falcon Square is not) and would nurture a sense of community.

I had an appointment cancelled because their car license plates were stolen.

This was new to me, and I was curious how common it is - so I filed an FOI with the DVLA for the number of plates reported stolen each year.

Does anyone know what on earth changed in 2018/2019?

JMacfie,

There's enough money for Sunak to helicopter everywhere at our expense. There was enough money for Truss to spend £1300 on one lunch. There's enough money for subsidising MPs food, accommodation and ludicrous expenses claims ( duck palace? Heated stables?) no matter how much that costs.
But repairing schools to make them safe for our children? Soz. No way.

It's . If you regularly consume music cheaply via or from whom even successful artists earn almost nothing, why not balance things out today and buy one album, or even just one track, from an artist on instead? They get all the money today and for many It's the difference between survival and just barely being alive.
It's a much nicer experience than the major platforms, too.
Go on. Go on. Go on...

Baby is not taking well to daycare. The nanny was great, although not financially viable for the long-term. But he cries when we leave him and it breaks my heart every time.

JMacfie,
@JMacfie@mastodon.scot avatar

@ben @underlap When I was a working mum I shared a nanny with two other nearby families. The first time I arrived early to collect my son and was having a cup of tea (England = tea is mandatory ) one of the other children, who'd been playing perfectly happily, noticed their parent's arrival and immediately burst into tears. I was reassured.
PS All my sons survived and are tbh better parents than I was.

On the recommendation of a chance-met fellow SciFi obsessive I've been reading my way through Charles Stross' series, an unholy ( really) dystopian mix of Lovecraft, Le Carré and 007.
Now I keep finding myself thinking that the news headlines refer to storylines in the books, because the dystopia we're living in is almost as terrifying .
