Every day I wake up, and search for an Alpha Male to tell me what to do with myself, but so far I haven't found one, so, I just do the things my vagina whispers to me in the night.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@RickiTarr Man I love the term alpha male. Cause it’s supposed to be based on the alpha male wolf, who rules his pack…alongside the alpha female 😂. And it turns out wolves don’t really have that structure at all. They’re just families. With a mother and father who are basically equal and both hunt and watch the babies.

    @lzg No you see, they are cool and worldly because they “know” it’s all hopeless. Optimism is just naïveté.

    It is one of the most frustrating currents of thought to me. From climate to politics I just can’t stand the feigned helplessness.

    Like, actually we are capable of doing good things. In fact, many good things are happening! They just started vaccinating children against malaria! Stop! Being! Hopeless!

And I’m deeply, deeply grieved by the thought that I did anything in my life before Trump to contribute to that unrighteous rage. Animosity is the enemy of liberty and unity. Before Republicans can reject Trump or end Trumpism, they’ll have to ease the anger that dominates far too many right-wing hearts.”

    @Tengrain Sigh. I hate that this is going to go just like this:

    DF: “I feel like maybe I did something wrong. Here is my sorrowful piece about that.”

    Internet: “yea. You did. What are you going to do to repair that harm?”

    DF: “stop attacking me! I already said I’m so sorry!”

    Trad Wife memes are always like a traditionally attractive skinny blonde woman in a white dress, in a field of flowers, holding hands with their immaculate children. The text always says something like, Why are you working a job, instead of doing your true calling? This is Godly Motherhood!

    So ‘dimsum’ means ‘touch the heart’ and I think one of the reasons why I’m very drawn to Mexican and Salvadoran foods is: I’ve been able to explore ‘new’ flavors and ingredients (since I wasn’t in this part of the world until recently).

    Yet in many ways they are the only foods that have the same ‘touch the heart’ vibe that I get from my ‘home’ cuisines of southern chinese / Malaysian / Thai / Indonesian. When I get disappointed at those cuisines here, I explore those other ones instead.

    Jackiemauro,

    There should be a word for the very specific type of shame that happens when a person that knows what's up (👍🏿), hopes to be nominated alongside highly talented but underrepresented people that they admire, only to be horrified and ashamed as they themselves are nominated, while the underrepresented people that they look up to, are not.🙂🙃

    Adele -> Beyonce.

    Ryan Gosling -> Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie.

    @mekkaokereke I once was in an Uber and (for some reason) the white driver was describing his doubt about the claims that police were racist. I told him as gently as I could that my personal experiences with the cops as a nice white lady were a world apart from the cops I saw when I was with my husband (hockey playing Black guy). Somehow just the word of a “nice white lady” seemed to make a huge impression on him. He seemed so shocked.

    Rapper Meek Mill is wondering out loud if Africans have access to streaming music apps like Spotify, and if so, if they listen to his music.

    There aren't enough stories about the Africans working at big tech companies, but there are a lot of us. There are many Ghanaians, South Africans, Kenyans, and Nigerians 🙋🏿‍♂️, working in tech.

    One of the biggest problems in modern discourse is we keep saying "But" instead of saying "And"

    Example: "Hamas committed murder but IDF strikes have killed innocent people" immediately sets up justification and whataboutism.

    Whereas "Hamas committed murder and IDF strikes have killed innocent people" gives us objectivity and a realistic world view that doesn't justify anything.

    Jackiemauro,
    @Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

    @Daojoan It’s like the absolute minimum level of complexity to hold in your mind, that two opposing actors can be simultaneously committing crimes.

    And yet.

    Somehow every story needs one villain and one victim. And one is never justified and the other is always justified.

    These are human stories, it is always going to be “and”.

    Jackiemauro,
    @Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

    @Daojoan with the added point of “A is bad and B is bad” does not imply “A and B are equally bad”

    Okay, I'm thinking about gift giving today. A little backstory about why:

    Every year my Father-in-law attempts to get my Mother-in-law a gift. She is a bit of a shopper, and is notoriously difficult to shop for. Every year he gets her something he guesses a woman would like (perfume, sweater, jewelry), and every year she doesn't really like it, and ends up begrudgingly using it or returns it. They have been married over 30 years, and seem to have a pretty good marriage otherwise. It's like she wants him to magically understand what she wants, and he is sort of equally bad at the whole thing too. I will never understand why they don't just have a conversation about this. Just for extra fun, she is the most bizarre gift giver, also, to the point that it has become an annual tradition that I show my friends what she got us. A small list of things we have gotten:

    A couch cover with grapes on it
    A sexy nightgown
    A painting of the house they live in
    A gourd painted to look like a cat eating a bird
    A package of tea that I would have absolutely loved, stuffed with cheap tea bags
    Children's Lego sets
    Toy trains
    Underwear that didn't fit either of us
    A wooden board covered in seashells that is supposed to hold a curling iron
    A waterproof bed cover

    I could go on and on. Just to clarify this doesn't bother me or my husband at all, we actually get a kick out of the weirdness. I don't personally care about presents much, I'm more of an experiences person.

    SO, if you've managed to get this far, how do you feel about gift giving/getting? Feel free to elaborate and give examples!

    Jackiemauro,
    @Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

    @RickiTarr I have to admit, I LOVE gifting. I love getting gifts. I love giving gifts. I love it as a way to spend time thinking about someone and what might bring them a little joy. And I love getting gifts cause I know someone did the same for me.

    Now, my family has never ever been high pressure about gifts so I think that helps. Often it’s just like “I finished this book and thought you’d like it! So I wrapped it and wrote a little note.”

    But yea, I do love it.

    RickiTarr, to random
    @RickiTarr@beige.party avatar

    Sometimes it feels like I'm this animal that has all these weird emotions that my brain and body are just not evolved enough to handle. I'm doing the best I can, I just know more stuff than I have the capacity to reckon. Understanding my place in the Universe and knowing that it is both significant and completely insignificant at the same time, is the strangest feeling. Seriously, who put me in charge of my own meaning?!

    Jackiemauro,
    @Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

    @RickiTarr this is not the same thing, but it reminded me of this experience I’m having with my 3yo, where he’s getting more and more able to express his feelings BUT his feelings are getting more and more complex. And I’m like, does the complexity of our internal life just ALWAYS outpace our ability to express it??

    This article is sobering, sad, infuriating at what it takes to run a restaurant in these days.

    And if my back of the envelope calculation is right, it means that basically a quarter of any bill you pay at a restaurant is going straight into a landlords pocket. Either the commercial space or out of the workers wages.
