Oh what's that? San Francisco just started using bait cars to catch car break-ins crews? And they've already found that SF car break-in suspects are not homeless Black people in the Tenderloin, but professional car break-in experts that are mostly not Black that hit cars in touristy areas, to find laptops and cameras that they sell to fences that move the stolen goods to other cities?

Like Black folk in the Bay have been trying to tell y'all for years?

The University of Pennsylvania is acting proud of Katalin Karikó now that she's won a Nobel. But they kicked her out of her research assistant professor job when she insisted on doing the work that won her that prize:

"She recalls spending one Christmas and New Year’s Eve conducting experiments and writing grant applications. But many other scientists were turning away from the field, and her bosses at UPenn felt mRNA had shown itself to be impractical and she was wasting her time. They issued an ultimatum: if she wanted to continue working with mRNA she would lose her prestigious faculty position, and face a substantial pay cut.

”It was particularly horrible as that same week, I had just been diagnosed with cancer,” said Karikó. “I was facing two operations, and my husband, who had gone back to Hungary to pick up his green card, had got stranded there because of some visa issue, meaning he couldn’t come back for six months. I was really struggling, and then they told me this."

"While undergoing surgery, Karikó assessed her options. She decided to stay, accept the humiliation of being demoted, and continue to doggedly pursue the problem. This led to a chance meeting which would both change the course of her career, and that of science."

Elsewhere she recalled:

“I thought of going somewhere else, or doing something else. I also thought maybe I’m not good enough, not smart enough."

She's now an adjunct in UPenn's neurosurgery department. Will they fast-track her for tenure now that she has a Nobel, or just live with the shame?

After two years, yesterday I stepped down as PTA head at my kids’ school. Helping run events and meetings matters, but the thing I’m most proud of was raising $25,000 to help two Afghan girls move to the UK and access the free, high-quality education they were denied at home.

@paezha @GreenSkyOverMe I guess I’m talking less about formal social services or schools and more just like “oh sure drop the kids with us we’ll watch them!” Kind of thing. Or everyone spends dinners in a group and keeps an eye on the kids.

That sort of thing makes a huge difference in parenting but I see religious communities often doing it much better.

OK, let's get into it. Let's talk about anti-Blackness on this here Fediverse, "civility traps", and "why nazis wear suits."

First: there are some trans folk that love Black people, care about our safety, and want to see the Fediverse be more welcoming to Black users.♥️ These kind folk volunteer considerable time, money, effort, and social capital, to make the Fediverse more welcoming for Black folk. We love them for this.

But there are some trans folk that are super fashy, and hate Black folk.

@mekkaokereke is the bad space simply a list? Maybe a graph of who is blocking which sites is more useful, so you can ally yourself with the nodes that align with your sensibilities. Also if you find yourself on a server that is added to the block list, will you know? How to help those people who innocently find themselves there while simultaneously isolating those who got it there in the first place? Should just put this in the google doc? Don’t want to spam… but perhaps I already am.

♥️♥️♥️Shoutout to the staff of the hotel I stayed at for expertly de-escalating a Karen situation!

♥️♥️♥️And shoutout to the white hotel guests that stuck around to make sure that hotel security heard exactly what she was trying to do. My favorite comment: "Wow! A Karen situation in real life! I've only ever seen these online! This is surreal! What is she thinking?"

End result, yours truly did not get kicked out of the hotel for no reason, and feels slightly better about the state of the world.

@mekkaokereke man oh man what goes through these bigots’ minds?!? I’m glad it turned out ok. I hope and pray this is a symptom of a changing culture. I remember when I started to notice that a homophobe was likely to be the odd one out instead of getting implicit or explicit support from the crowd. It made a big difference. Though clearly those gains aren’t guaranteed.

Offensive question?

What is with New Yorkers and bodegas? I don't get the obsession. I understand that it's nice to have a place you can get stuff you need around the corner, but if you transplant one of these stores to literally anywhere else it's a dingy overpriced shop with low selection. I get it as a need, but not as a thing to get weird about. What am I missing?

They might not meet the needs you have, but they meet the needs of the community. Also given who runs and who uses them…I don’t think there’s a lot of ‘murica fuck yea going on there.

🤔The owner of Twitter is mad that Latham & Watkins is doing pro bono work? Because pro bono means working for free? But... I thought he liked not paying lawyers?

The extra cruelty that SF shows to homeless people is why NYC people are kinder. "NYC people are mean!" is a lie.

NYC has a higher homeless rate than SF. But because Wall Street finance bros are less cruel than SF tech bros, fewer than 5% of NYC's homeless are unsheltered. SF is over 50%. 🤦🏿‍♂️

So frustrating that the fact that you can’t just wish poor people away into some nebulous ether has to be argued at all. If you don’t build housing, people will have to go somewhere other than a house.

    Because they weren't familiar with his phrase, and he wasn't familiar with the anti-semitic dog-whistle.

    He apologized for being misunderstood, not for being anti-semitic.

    Yes, it is very good that he clarified.

    I’ve been thinking a lot about how it’s so strange that when we post, we don’t know who our audience really is. His message made total sense if the audience was Black people. But his audience also included Jews…and neo-Nazis.

    So it makes sense to clarify to that he doesn’t hate the former, and he’s not on a team w the latter.

    I feel like the bigger question is, how do we make these calls for clarification/apology feel less unfair/burdensome?

    No Megan Rapinoe slander will be tolerated. None, you hear me? Rapinoe was the first white football player to support Colin Kaepernick. Soccer is football.

    I'm scared of France, Netherlands, and England. The US didn't get much worse. Everyone else has gotten a lot better.

    The "I'm a Fox watcher that can't name 3 players in the US Women's Nation Team" to "I'm now an expert on women's soccer, and make more misogynistic comments about the USWNT than Alexi Lalas" pipeline is always in full effect.

    And when she tried to join the Fediverse, she was greeted with a barrage of hate, sexism, racism, and anti-semitism that should have never been allowed to happen.

    So now no one on Fediverse gets to interact with her directly about her work on here. Our loss. 😢

    Which is why we'll make it so that this type of terrible welcome is unlikely to happen again. Allowing it to happen to her was a choice. We will make better ones.

    @mekkaokereke @orionkidder I still remember the feeling of shock and betrayal I felt when I randomly stumbled across the UC charter and it said right there tuition was to be free.
