Its depressing to see those who shouldn't risk anything risking so much and those who are so privileged and can risk a tiny bit not willing to feel the slightest discomfort. That's what I see daily.

Crucial observation from Rachel Cohen over at the new place - and it points to a larger problem: In the mainstream political discourse, especially in mainstream media coverage, terms like “moderate” and “extreme” have absolutely no substantive definition, which makes it easy for conservatives to constantly drag their meaning rightward.

Yup. If we start from the POV that a refusal to vote is in a sense a vote of no confidence, perhaps that would break open the mental block so many people and institutions seem to have about it...

I think a key way the capitalist class uses cultural hegemony to maintain power and control is by constantly promoting and reiterating the myth that most people are fundamentally lazy and will not work unless forced to. Despite this idea being demonstrably false, it is an integral part of most American's worldview even if they are not aware of it being so.

    MadMadMadMadRN,

This idea that people are inherently lazy is so deeply embedded in the minds of most Americans that many who identify as liberal or left-of-center tacitly believe it. It is one of the most common arguments used against a stronger social safety net and more redistribuitve policies. Who will work if the necessities of life such as food, housing, healthcare, education, etc. are provided to all without condition?

@MacropodCare @soc_i_ety @KashifShah @PaulNickson My personal views are coloured by my background of rampant racism, ableism, bigotry & enabled by folks who are OK being super supportive online but fail offline & often are hypocrites.
I have mass social anxiety & have had to force myself to deal with it for bigger things. Often puked pre/post events from anxiety issues. Pushed through because goal of breaking stigmas was bigger than myself. I force myself to break my own comfort barriers.

    KashifShah,

@Judeet88 @PaulNickson @soc_i_ety In the context of Einstein-Freud Theory of War, “growth of culture” means progress towards equal rights for all.

Freud preferred the term civilization, to the term culture, however, he was really ultimately speaking about the rights of the ruled being grown to equality, not superiority, with the rights of the rulers.

    > 30 articles of rights, universal to all members of the human family, no matter how much you hate them

This concept is seriously under threat these days, and from the authoritarian left as much as from the insurrectionist right. The two inadvertently feed each other with their increasingly war-like reactions to each other. This civil cold war distracts everyone from what the authoritarian right is up to, putting us all at risk.

Last night one of my toots got targeted by a bunch of bad people. My notifications were full of slurs. I noticed they are all from the same one instance that allows shitposting, trolling and hate speech. This kind of targeting and toxicity would been allowed on and but on the and I can just block the entire server once and for all.

It's also generally wonderful that most servers won't tolerate discrimination, shitposting (like actual hate posting, not jokes) and those who do are easy to ban. It's nice to know I don't need to wait or get 💩 emoji as answer from support etc. Instead I can just block them all with one click and move on with my life.

Btw thought I already blocked, but if you did the same mistake and it left unnoticed, please : poa.st.

black person here and THIS ALL DAY.

I am regularly accused of "siding with Nazis" for still being on Twitter.

These clowns don't understand that -- yes, I do encourage people to look elsewhere, but Twitter is still a deeply important part of black networking, whether casual or organizational.

Then people have the nerve to condescend about it, as if WE'RE not the ones who are EXPERTS at navigating spaces owned by the bad guys.

Decoding the Gurus going #BothSides is not something i particularly enjoy. I did appreciate some of their earlier episodes on Peterson, Rogan, Weinberg etc. But ever since that interview with Helen Lewis (TERF) and now Matt Johnsohn (free speech absolutist), i think they are fast sliding into radicalized centrism.
