Mathematician (Emeritus Stanford), author (inc. many for a general audience), and avid cyclist. For many years "The Math Guy" on NPR. Co-founder of the ed tech company BrainQuake. I write an edited monthly blog for the Math. Assoc. of America called "Devlin's Angle", often (not always) about #mathed. I will not vote for Biden and I urge everyone I know to abstain from voting for him or Trump. They are the same. This is a dual-party fascist state. Biden is a 21st Century Hindenburg. I previously felt a need not to give presidential voting advice publicly. Today changed that. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/trump-biden-collide-split-screen-trips-border-immigration-spotlight-rcna140899?taid=65e1095ae6aea10001992eb2&utm_campaign=trueanthem&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter

@w7voa That 60% of voters want as president a bitter old man who has transparently lost his mental faculties and can no longer even utter a simple sentence or hold his thoughts does not bode well for the US. He will pass, those deluded citizens will still be with us

    We have to start with the assumption that Trump wants to destroy NATO. He knows exactly what it is.

    But he lies about it for the same reason he lied about Obama's birth certificate -- it's a con man's assault on reason, using the biases of his audience. Racism with birthering. Mob talk for NATO.

    Donald Trump tonight just sold out all of Eastern Europe to Putin — and if he gets back into power he will destroy Europe — and drag America to shame and ruin.

    @tristansnell Trump and the GOP are Putin's most effective weapon ever. Made possible by a population with too big a percentage of gullible citizens, a corrupt SCOTUS, and a crazy system to choose presidents.

    Counterexamples are so useful. Why are they buried in the middle of papers authored by people who didn’t actually formulate them? In the paper I’m reading, one small benefit at least is that the inventor of the counterexample is named 🤷🏽‍♀️ But I want to know more, so much more …

    Nice article by Jane Caro in The Saturday Paper, albeit a rather sad one. It’s genuinely frustrating to look at how the mishmash of Federal/State level funding of education creates a system that massively disadvantages poorer states. And honestly I still don’t understand why the Federal government has any public policy justification for funding private schools.

    https://www.thesaturdaypaper.com.au/comment/topic/2024/02/10/simple-idea-225-fully-fund-public-schools

    KeithDevlin, (edited )
    @KeithDevlin@fediscience.org avatar

    @djnavarro Here in the US, the poorest states are overwhelmingly Republican, and many of them actively oppose anything resembling a modern education, opting instead for highly restrictive, anti STEM curricula; which guarantees they remain at the bottom. Tragic

    I am so sick of the men who insist on referring to me as “Daniel” in emails. These are men who have never known me by any name except “Danielle”, and as far as I can tell have not clocked me. “Danielle” is the only name that appears anywhere in documents. Women never do this to me, only men (about 5-10% of them). Nobody, regardless of gender, makes the reverse error. Not once in 30+ years did it happen

    I think it’s plain misogyny? Some men are simply too lazy to use women’s names correctly
