@KeithDevlin@fediscience.org

Mathematician (Emeritus Stanford), author (inc. many for a general audience), and avid cyclist. For many years "The Math Guy" on NPR. Co-founder of the ed tech company BrainQuake. I write an edited monthly blog for the Math. Assoc. of America called "Devlin's Angle", often (not always) about #mathed. The ranking site AcademicInfluence.com ranks me No.1 of the world's "Ten Most Influential Mathematicians 2000-2020". [https://tinyurl.com/w6p2bx5s] Being active on sites like this probably helped!

Duracell is now selling batteries with a "bitter coating" to discourage swallowing them by children (or adults, I assume).

KeithDevlin,
@KeithDevlin@fediscience.org avatar

@lauren Yes, and the coating means they won't work in an Apple Airtag unless you first wipe them with an alcohol wipe to remove the coating.

Apropos the Guardian lede, using nitrogen gas to exterminate a human being now has been tested. Alabama joins Nazi Germany in conducting lethal experiments on people. Slightly belated time to post this but here's a version of one of the original Mac 128k brochures cleaned, restored, made ready for print to have your own crisp clear copy laying about.

I thought I'd uploaded this a year ago but apparently these things happen inside my head but not out, sometimes.

Cycling in Toronto requires total vigilance. You have to assume the cars can't see you, because most of them don't. You have to assume that every car is out to get you, because some of them are. You have to be aware of the location and speed of each car at all times, and assume each car will pull some dangerous stunt right in front of you, because many of them will.

Schrödinger wouldn't last five minutes.

Using AI to create a face from crime-scene DNA & then running it through face recognition tech isn’t only “junk science,” EFF’s Jennifer Lynch told @WIRED - “It’s very dangerous, because it puts people at risk of being a suspect for a crime they didn’t commit.”

@KeithDevlin In your opinion, were the maths featured more prominently in the early seasons of Numb3rs? It seemed to me in the later seasons the mathematic principles were just mentioned in passing.

KeithDevlin,
@KeithDevlin@fediscience.org avatar

@Enema_Cowboy Yes. I believe that was a decision made by the Scott brothers who were the producers who felt the focus should be more on the main characters. And Charlie got "darker". They likely knew what they were doing; they were good at what they did!

Attended big math meeting in San Francisco this month. (Drove there & back alone; no air travel.) Moscone Center, big spaces, lots of air flow. Vaxxed to the max for Covid and for RSV. Not many masked but distanced well (we can all Bayes the risks), and that seems to have been a sensible option given the social benefit. I took a risk on hand shaking with colleagues I had not seen since Jan 2020. Lost. Came home with a 5-day nasty head cold. No vaccines & transfer by touch. Just like old times

    Reflecting on my last post. It’s such a strange aspect to transness, the way you end up celebrating things that for everyone else would be utterly unnoticeable. Wearing a swimsuit. Someone calling you by your own name. Seeing that name in an email. Being called daughter. Seeing your name on a photo id. Making it through airport security. Being invited to a girls night out. Being permitted to take your medication. Each of these is utterly prosaic, yet something you have to fight so damn hard for

    KeithDevlin,
    @KeithDevlin@fediscience.org avatar

    @djnavarro The societal aspects should not be so hard. It sounds like a long hard journey just for what it is. Your strength is a reminder of things most of us take for granted but are each of value to us. Thank you for sharing

    Forget the fascist Republican Party. Here in Blue California we know immigrants don't poison the blood. Quite the opposite; they make life better for all. One of my local cheese shops/cafes.
