** 'You carry it all your life': What it's like coming out as transgender in your seventies **

I really enjoyed reading this story from New Zealand a few years ago, so I dug it out to share here after a long search. Because maybe you'll enjoy it too

Having been here and posting as openly since early November, the reason I adore the (or at least my corner of it) is the safety for us and wonderful moderation. It's a joyful, quirky, safe space where people can flourish :heart_trans:

It was much quieter back then, but you know what? I'm here to be openly myself. To post cat pics, chat on tech and politics and whatever. I'm not here for 'reach' and I don't want to read transphobic slurs - which I have also seen on the lemmy side of the Fediverse - it's like reading birdsite stuff. So I fully support servers wanting to protect people like myself pro-actively as a starting point because Threads can be the same, but also much worse given user numbers

QT: can strongly recommend this:

And if you don't follow Ada @ada - the wonderful admin of blahaj.zone and lemmy.blahaj.zone - consider it a big recco, as she's simply awesome btw

The Deep-Fried Jam Sandwich 🥪 - English cooking is still alive and flourishing

https://archive.ph/76q8q (archived, UK Telegraph)

"The £5 treat is comprised of two pieces of sliced white bread spread with Tiptree’s strawberry jam. The sandwich is sealed together like ravioli before being deep fried and rolled in sugar...

"Eric Snaith, the chef-owner of three fish and chip restaurants in Norfolk and Cambridgeshire, said he had taken inspiration from an old Scouts recipe for a fried sandwich and ended up with the 'intriguing' dessert"

Comment - actually, it does look delicious! But omg ... the calories? 😋

Feels like a good week to tell every non-binary person in the how amazing you are, and remind everyone here that non-binary identities are stunning, beautiful, individual, deep and go so far beyond the 'enby' or 'NB' stereotypes you may not believe unless you're talking with them to understand ... :heart_nb:

Well you're adored, amazing, you've taught me over the years and are still teaching me new things about gender ... including off-grid outside the binary. Plus you take personal authenticity to the very very max. Do I sound a fan? Well yes, cannot deny how much I think you all rock ... :flag_nonbinary: :butterfly_nonbinary:

Just sitting outside recovering with a large glass of Chardonnay after my first ever mammogram. I mean, I don't mind a squeeze, but that was more like a wine press ... plus all the time "relax your body" says the radiographer 🙄

Okay, at least I know the routine next time ie. more stuff not covered in the 'trans 101 manual'. Bottoms up folks ... 🥂

Anyone who followed the now dismissed UK General Medical Council (GMC) case against Helen, who set up @GenderGP (the only Informed Consent available in the UK, via an offshore model) in detail will know what an arduous sh*t-flinging exercise that was. Only respect ... :heart_trans:

"Doctor who gave puberty blockers to children nominated for ITV-backed diversity award. Helen Webberley has been put forward as a positive role LGBT role model in face of trans row criticism"

UK Telegraph, so typical transphobic dogwhistles and nonsense. But regardless:

The Guardian: "Crows and magpies using anti-bird spikes to build nests, researchers find"

[ Comment: Loved that birds are so smart and adaptable too - maybe we should stop using the term 'birdbrain' here? :birdsite: ]

"Nests recovered from trees in Rotterdam in the Netherlands and Antwerp in Belgium were found to be constructed almost entirely from strips of long metal spikes that are often attached to buildings to deter birds from setting up home on the structures.

“Kees Moeliker, the director of the Natural History Museum Rotterdam ...'I didn’t expect this. These anti-bird spikes are meant to deter birds, they are supposed to scare them off, but on the contrary, the birds just utilise them.'”

Not showing my age or anything, but as a kid a Kodak Carousel 600 was what we meant by 'multimedia' tech ... am I alone? Except the word multimedia didn't exist 'back in the day' of course, so this was the equivalent of VR goggles

It was designed to be brought out for Xmas and holidays, and to torture the neighbours with holiday snaps

** Recipe: Thai Massaman Chicken curry (authentic w. slight adjustments) **

I haven't published a recipe in a while but this is by far my favourite Thai curry, being southern Thai w. Indian influences. This is pretty authentic, noting I'd always buy the curry paste!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/thai_massaman_chicken_82428

  • 50g Massaman curry paste eg Mae Ploy**
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 red onions, sliced
  • 500g/1lb 2oz chicken breast, cut into 1.5cm strips
  • 2 large potato, peeled and cut into 1.5cm cubes
  • 250ml/9fl oz good-quality chicken stock, preferably homemade
  • 200ml/7fl oz coconut milk
  • 2 tomatoes, skins removed, flesh roughly chopped
  • 6 lime leaves
  • 1 star anise
  • 2 tbsp fish sauce**
  • 1½ tbsp palm sugar
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce (imo light soy)
  • 1 lime, juice only, optional
  • 25g/1oz roasted peanuts, roughly chopped (I use cashew nuts)

** When working with curry paste, each brand has different "heat" plus a different level of saltiness, so it’s difficult to determine an exact measure of fish sauce

Inside Britain’s tiniest places: 'There’s really only space for one punter inside this micropub at Claygate station (and more)’
https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/jul/07/inside-britains-tiniest-places-its-an-engineering-work-of-art-with-coffee

... in the commuter town of Esher, which has a 30cm x 38cm (12in x 18in) bar and makes fine use of a former coal ordering office. Drinking takes place almost exclusively outside the pub, and with glasses banned by the council, the 55 regulars have pewter tankards (labelled with their names) hanging on hooks inside. Others sip their ales from compostable cups or take them home in milk cartons. The food menu extends to local sausage rolls.

Honestly, this is the kind of story I need more of in my newspapers...

As a follow-up on something @Elodie_lyra tooted, I logged an FOI on why the UK Land Registry would ask for a GRC on gender change, but won't accept a UK Passport (as would seem logical)

** I just got a reply back saying HMLR is now reviewing this:**

Coincidence?

FOI QUESTION:
"... the processes are duplicated:
a. One needs the same requirements for name change ie a UK Deed Poll, or a Statutory Declaration
b. Changing Gender on a UK Passport has exactly the same process as the Land Registry and can be done simply via a GP/doctor letter

REPLY:
"Our searches have not revealed any recorded information held in relation to why a UK Passport is not included as accepted evidence of change of gender, however, HMLR is in the process of reviewing the Change of gender (CNG) form. This will include a review of the current evidence options required in panel 2 of the form, and consideration will be given to whether this can be extended to include a valid UK Passport"

  1. Tolerate us (as trans) ... or
  2. Accept us or
  3. Affirm us or
  4. Cherish us

The true cherishers we find on the way are so 💖 💜 that we will never ever forget you and always return the feeling

Yesterday: I posted about the UK far-right conservatives "... at a guess, I suspect Miriam Cates could be their next figurehead, but let's see"

https://tech.lgbt/@Natasha_Jay/110646348678235232

So that was some tea-leaf 🌿 reading as today: we see Miriam Cates MP all over the press with the "New Conservatives" (a statement by her was played on LBC radio when I was driving).

Comment: She and co-lead Danny Kruger MP are both evangelical christians, as is Steve Baker MP

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/jul/03/tory-group-warns-sunak-he-risks-losing-election-if-he-doesnt-cut-net-migration

> "New Conservatives such as Miriam Cates also say large number of (immigration) arrivals risks damaging UK’s cultural security"

Comment: From this splintering and "noise", we can see jostling for the post General Election Tory party leadership / influence and power grabs already being made (they know they are out of power ofc)

And what could "cultural security" be other than racism dressed-up?

The way I can tell the wider world out there doesn't see Mastodon as a Twitter replacement now is that I don't see any posts that read like a cut-paste from LinkedIn these days ... just from professors, furries, archelogists, trans folk, game developers, musicians, artists etc

You know - interesting people?

Gender Incongruence: "Before 2013, the situation was even worse because people were then diagnosed with a clearly defined mental illness know as gender identity disorder. Yes indeed to qualify for hormone therapy you had to be certified by a psychiatrist as having a mental health problem. But how can affirming your own personal identity be a disease? Who is really suffering the dysphoria? Is it the client or is it the mental health professional, desperately trying to defend society's need to minimize the extent of gender diversity?"

Steve Baker withdraws support for Braverman over grooming gangs rhetoric, says ally

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/jul/02/steve-baker-withdraws-support-for-suella-braverman-over-grooming-gangs-rhetoric-says-ally

> ... it is understood Baker has decided he would not back Braverman again because of serious concerns over the way she has approached the issue of so-called grooming gangs

Comment: If true, I'd read this as significant going forward. Steve Baker is probably the Conservative far-right's quiet kingmaker. He's senior in the ERG Hard Brexit group, and an evangelical ie. very socially conservative ... at a guess, I suspect Miriam Cates could be their next figurehead, but let's see

** Please remember that openly trans people literally do a Pride Parade 🌈 daily in real life **

Like, I'm proud of you and knowing you, because there is no hiding who you are, who we are. Braveness? There are no words to do it justice, only admiration, understanding ...

I wasn't going to post a selfie today (promise) but if there's a hint of natural mischievousness which I rather liked. Oh yeah, and rocking the red too, the brazen hussy that I am 😉

✨ ✨ Authenticity. Authenticity. Authenticity ✨ ✨
I cannot say it enough. As trans it's what we seek, even if we cannot always articulate it or are working on 'realising' it. Whatever you see is just an inner me coming out. Unpack yourself fifty times, challenge yourself, unpack again twenty times (we'll that's my style! 😂).

Pretty? "whatever". Boobs? "whatever, if you want then sure". Dysphoria? Not a mental condition, a result of trauma, of societal repression from the day you are born ... Nose job? "yeah that'd be nice thanks!!"

Feel nice and comfortable as and in yourself? "Yes, now that's the real deal, then you're getting there ..."

Today - jeans and a plain top

Feeling vulnerable, weak, tired. Also feeling strong, genuine, fizzing. Women can be complex huh? Amazing, must be the hormones ...

✨ Gook luck with your authenticity ✨ Try not to be a copy or idealised verison of anyone or anything - cis or trans
