The chalk on our front walk right now is loosely based on German expressionist artist Gabriele Münter's portrait of fellow artist Marianne Werefkin, from 1909. It was fun playing with some different colors and shapes.

An can be a costume opportunity, if you really want it to be one. :) (This was from 2017. I didn't dress up today.)

In 2019 I made a bathtub costume for my son, to fit over his wheelchair. We called it the Bathmobile, because it had working headlights and a license plate. It's made from discarded cardboard (a wardrobe box turns out to be the perfect size), frappuccino lids, tap lights, scrubbers, and rubber duck from the 99-cent store, and a lot of spray paint, foil tape, and duct tape. #wheelchaircostume #costume #bathtub #bubblebath #Halloween

I crocheted Thor and Loki helmets for my kid and her friend to wear for Halloween in high school. Various thrifted yarns, including some metallics I rarely use, which was fun. #crochet #costume #Thor #Loki #Halloween

About a dozen years ago, I crocheted a coral reef costume for myself, inspired by the big international coral reef crochet project. Random secondhand yarns, lots of hyperbolic shapes. Can't see in these photos, but some of the shapes have tiny beads sewn inside.

In 2017, I crocheted myself a solar system costume. The headpiece is mounted on a bike helmet for stability (I got that tip from some folks who build showgirl costumes). The tunic is made from fine black linen yarn, very matte, very tedious, much like I imagine space is most of the time. The planets are made using an online sphere pattern generator, so that I could vary the sizes in a predictable way; they are strung on a fishing line with beads, and suspended from an elastic collar, also crocheted. They are also kept in place with a beaded "asteroid belt", located between Mars and Jupiter, of course. Photographed at Manhattan Beach Pier. All second-hand yarns, though I had to ask around for enough yellow to make the sun so large.

In 2018 I crocheted myself a squid costume, with silvery yarns and big metal grommets for suckers on the tentacles. Photographed at Redondo Beach Pier.

I love hexagons, and I love intense colors in rainbow order, and I love using up scraps of thrifted yarn. So this blanket was all joy to make.

In 2014, I made a steampunk submarine costume for my son's wheelchair. When the chair was in motion, the pinwheel twirled, the wheel's design spiraled, and the periscope was retractable. Made entirely from cardboard and random stuff, including paper tubes, pill container lids, altoids tins, wallpaper, duct tape, and a clear plastic salad bowl rescued after a catered event.

A few years ago I crocheted a big colorful placard parking sign for Opulent Mobility, an annual exhibit of disability-related art.

Our first chalk art on the front walk happened in March 2020, the week that everything closed, and daughter had to move home from college. I decided to go chalk a little flower garden to be something cheerful for the neighbors. I'm still going, almost four years later.
