Hey #AskFedi,

Is anyone out there using FOSS for accounting?

I'm struggling with Quickbooks desktop (which you can only get as a subscription now, unless you pay four figures for an enterprise license).

#Xero comes highly recommended to me, but I'm loathe to go "#cloud" for accounting. Very loathe indeed.

#BoostPlease?

Edit: Thanks for all of the feedback so far, updates and clarification following in a reply...

Forgot to make this public, so I'm re-posting:

@benjaminhollon @joel

People talk about like it's such a new thing…

There was a company 20+ years ago (Loki Software) that chiefly ported games to linux (commercially).
There was also a wine-based -like compatibility layer called (IIRC) . I think it was actually an "open core" system, where sales of the software helped fund and/or older versions/portions of the software was released as source for wine.

I have regrets.

Ouch.

Why is it that people's reaction to is either cult-level positive or Ted Cruz-level disgust?

I don't think I've heard more than a single person basically say, "Yeah, Rust is ok, but I like X better because Y." ;)

vs. (Todo.TXT)

Sound off!

I've been using my own system which is mainly just $EDITOR and a script that takes out completed tasks every day by grepping out lines that begin with "X "
The problem is that it would be nice to just see a couple most important tasks at a time, instead of having a blood-chilling text file FULL of todo items in your face all day 😅

Dear @mozilla
Please, please, please put the RSS indicator back in Firefox.

People need to know about this technology which empowers users over greedy, controlling corporations.

Update: As many have pointed out, you can use @thunderbird as an RSS feed reader, and there are many #firefox add-ons to restore the RSS indicator (one of which I'm already using). But my point is that Firefox needs to lean into RSS as an answer to all the crap that is the modern web, and help educate users about it

I have to agree to waive my right to a jury trial in order to order a pizza.

What the heck?!

People, READ YOUR BLOODY AGREEMENTS. Please. They're binding legal documents. Literally all I do is search for the words "waive," "binding," and "arbitration." If I see those, I say no.

It's just not that hard.

I'm thinking about re-enrolling in the (Academy of Model Aeronautics) and joining a local .

There aren't any RC 's [sic.] particularly close to me, but not too far away, either. All I really want to do is dink around with a little park flyer, but people are way too scared of even the most pedestrian 's [sic.] these days, and you really need some kind of air field to fly in, whether a formal one, or just a literal field out in the boonies.

I'm not saying anyone should switch to for trifling reasons (especially if you're on a kick-butt customized tiling WM), but Konsole does all kinds of cute things like change *** so that the middle * is higher, and turn -> and --> into solid arrows. It also groups two or three repeating colons into a somewhat tighter spacing, presumably for
::: headers like this :::
(Once you get to four or more repeating colons, it reverts to monospace, otherwise the layout would get all messed up)

Hey folks,

I'm trying to explore an alternate history (via emulation) where I got an equivalent A500 system from my parents for Christmas 1989 instead of the Macintosh SE (20MB HD, 1MB RAM) I got that year.

What magazines can I look for on archive dot org or elsewhere online to find hardware prices and bundles for that year? Any idea?

Guys,

I fixed my silly phone.
It's a Pixel 4A 5G, and there's dust under the main camera, which is something I use a decent bit.

I was doing tons of research into alternative OSes (because even de-googled is pretty BLEH), and was considering getting a (not Pro) for & , or getting a Pixel 3a XL for .

Dear L.L. Zamenhof,

"scii?" Seriously?

First it was "fartas." Then I quit studying . Then I tried it again and got as far as "shatas," and laughed my head off.

Now, "scii" (pronounced s-ts-ee-ee). I get it you're using Latin "scire," but the pronunciation is just atrocious, bro. 😢

🤦‍♂️

Hey @benjaminhollon,

What's that utility you use to batch-rename files (drops you into $EDITOR and lets you rename them from there)?

RedHat is officially deprecating XOrg.

This is the corporate version of "It works fine on my machine."

Wake me up when Barrier, some replacement of Xbanish, and actual network transparency are available on Wayland. :P~ :eyeroll:
