In a function that sets up more than one thing, if you want to unwind in the error handler without conditionals, you need one go-to per unwind point.

We have reached a point where more money is spent to "educate" (or "train") machines than to educate kids.

StompyRobot,

@MartinEscardo
It's a funny saying, but US child education expenditure per year is way bigger than machine learning expenditure per year.
The US spends almost a trillion dollars per year on K-12 education, not including preschools.

It DOES reduce the actual effect, of course!

There's a recurring talking point in The Discourse about "this is why you need to pay OS lib devs" that is not entirely wrong yet simultaneously seems to be missing the point in a rather profound way for many scenarios.

It's true that many important libs that a lot of programs rely on (another example would be libjpeg-turbo) are underfunded and lack for resources, but beyond that still is code that doesn't even want to try, and I don't see space made for that either.

StompyRobot,
@StompyRobot@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@rygorous
There are alternatives to any lib.
You can even swap out Linux kernel for BSD kernel and it won't be the end of the world.

"How many machines is this on, and how frequently is it invoked, and with what privileges?" Are the real questions.

Inspired by Stephen Hawking, to test if time travel is possible, I threw a party for time travelers but sent out the invitations afterward to see if anyone came.

Nobody came, but I don't know if it’s because time travel doesn't exist or everyone hates me.

    @upmultimedia If I read GPL code with my human brain, and learn how to do something, and later do that thing in a similar way (but not copying the code,) then the legal interpretation is that this new code is not GPL.

    (This is how copyright works, else there would only be one song about love, and it would be owned by Disney.)

    So, does it matter where the LLM falls on the "copy/paste" versus "learning" spectrum? Does it matter if other non-GPL code also does the same things?

    StompyRobot,
    @StompyRobot@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @upmultimedia
    You didn't answer my question though.
    The law believes that reimplementation and learning are not derivative works.
    In the cases that I list above, what do you think the law says, and do you think the law should be changed?

    Except when they did, the car STANK of clutch. The guy said "I'm not very good at hill starts". Like (a) give the job to someone else, (b) the car has a lovely big handbrake - learn to use it (c) this car has hill-start brake assist ya wally, or (d) ring us and we'll pick it up like normal.

    The parallels between Israel today under Bibi and a potential second Trump presidency here are remarkable and horrific. Both are fascist leaders who only have the support of around half their populations. Both are facing criminal charges. While neither are fanatically religious, both maintain their power by pandering to the most radically religious segments of their populations. Both behave in racist ways. Both are nuclear armed. Think about it.

    Apple Cancels Work on Electric Car, Ending Decade long Effort

    The most recent approach discussed internally was delaying a car release until 2028 and reducing self-driving specifications from Level 4 to Level 2+ technology.

    Many employees on the car team — known as the Special Projects Group, or SPG — will be shifted to the artificial intelligence division

    I don't get why IHVs hide their tools within layers of security and identity validation steps, that then don't work as intended and prevent developers from using those tools. What are they trying to protect?
    On the other hand, AMD's approach is so refreshing.

    StompyRobot,
    @StompyRobot@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @castano the theory is that the tools, when decompiled, could reveal internal trade secrets, and you don't get to claim trade secrets without strong identity protection

    More on AT&T nationwide mobile outage

    Various media services are confused about this. Some are reporting 70,000 people out -- it's actually apparently the entire nationwide network, but that number of people have apparently complained officially so far on support forums I'm told. There are some reports that other mobile carriers are out, these are not true -- ONLY AT&T is out.

    911 continues to tell people to use LANDLINES!

    Dear California CPUC, do you understand now the risks that AT&T is trying to force down our throats by ending landlines?

    StompyRobot,

    wait a fucking second: This smartphone has a FLIR camera built in, and also the GPS has broken so that it doesn't work while you're in motion. This isn't a hardware failure, this is a software bug they delivered in an update.

    What's the best way to compress normal maps for storage & delivery?

    Artists tend to use PNG due to the quality losses and artifacts introduced by JPEG or other DCT based codecs.

    I don't think there's anything inherently wrong about DCT codecs in this setting, it's just that they are not tuned for this content and don't use the right metrics.

    Has anyone done work on this area? Are there any examples or references I should be looking at for inspiration?

    1/25: How do you feel about writers who write outside of their gender/sexuality/race?

    Flip the question: how would you feel about a writer who ONLY ever wrote inside their gender/sexuality/race?

    (They're not exactly stretching themselves or developing their art, are they?)

    Yes, it's easy to mess up writing the other. "How not to" isn't a topic I can answer in a toot. But it's important for writers to try to see the world through other eyes.

    @cstross yeah, the tension is between "do we lend support to a currently bad regime and let their people get some joy and maybe move the needle" and "can all of our people even go there?"

    Even our moral compass is relative, of course, even though we happen to like ours for Reasons.
