The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV’s great range comes at a high cost

At $94,500, the Chevrolet Silverado RST First Edition offers diminishing returns.

@arstechnica it truly baffles me that anyone can think these cars look good, they're the pugs of the car world.

It's like they just extruded the bottom of a normal car until it's 2x the height, it looks like some sort of duplo toy car just blown up to life size and then a bit larger..

@notjustbikes not only EVs, asia is absolutely styling on on everyone else in terms of mopeds as well.

Gogoro is making mopeds that are borderline scifi and have deployed a really good battery swapping system in like 10 countries, it's despicable that the EU hasn't even started working on its own battery swap standard..

It always amazes me to see people hate on certain reviewers / websites for review scores.

It’s literally that one person’s opinion on the game.

Did it not line up with yours? Congratulations, you’re human with your own tastes 👍

Social media creates soooo much hate it’s unreal

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@mastodon.social avatar

@gamingonlinux i think the real problem here is presenting a score and a personal opinion at the same time.
Ben Croshaw makes a point of not assigning scores in Fully Ramblomatic because that sets the wrong expectations.

I would clearly separate the personal opinion in an article from the review score, which should be as objective as feasible rather than people giving wildly different scores because some reviewers REALLY like card games or whatever.

Ten years ago today I sold my car (Toyota Aygo) in Brussels. It turned out to be the last car I ever owned!

I really don't miss it. Owning a car is more of a pain than anything ... if you live in the right kind of city.

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@mastodon.social avatar

@notjustbikes my dad got an e-bike last summer and literally that day was the last time he used the car on a regular basis, after that i believe he used it maybe 5 times more, one of which was to give me a ride to a job that i quit due to not being able to get there with public transport.

mind boggling that people continue to own cars in urban areas.

Hi, I'm stuck waiting on laundry to finish and am bored, so why don't I come on here and write some hot takes about YouTube?

I mean, I can think of several reasons, but too bad I'll do it anyway.

Knowing the leanings of the folks on this particular platform this is likely to spark some debate, but note that I'm not trying to paint YouTube as a saint - in fact, the first thing I want to talk about is a strategy they've taken which puts me and all YT creators in a weird place:

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@mastodon.social avatar

@TechConnectify one major problem is that getting youtube premium ends up teaching companies that the way to get more revenue is by treating consumers like criminals while they themselves engage in actively criminal conduct.

I would gladly pay for youtube premium if google wasn't profoundly deplorable, they didn't squeeze people for every last cent, and the platform didn't actively endorse content that makes me sick.

Until that happens and hell freezes, i'll spend my money on better things.

    XDA claim they're a "leading tech publication".

    They published an article titled: "Why I like Linux on my Steam Deck but not my desktop"

    -> Uses tiny and basically unsupported obscure Linux distribution to make a case against it on the desktop.

    -> Also thinks somehow Proton is only on Steam Deck?

    Please, if you're going to publish a Linux article, get your writers to do more than 1 minute research into it.

    Swedneck,
    @Swedneck@mastodon.social avatar

    @gamingonlinux i honestly feel like people just detest the idea of change and so they make an intentionally poor attempt at trying the new thing just so they can go "see! It's terrible!" and not have to think about it any further.

    So, I just made some fudge from a recipe that says to chill it once poured into a greased pan.

    Given feedback on the fridge video... do y'all just never ever do that in Europe? Because, yeah, the little red fridge would not handle that well at all but I got a lot of folks being like "well, duh, you just don't put warm things in the fridge, everybody knows that" in the comments.

    We don't know that because - get this - our fridges can usually just handle it!

    Swedneck,
    @Swedneck@mastodon.social avatar

    @TechConnectify Presuming i'm reading a recipe written by someone living in the same place, i'd just assume they know what they're doing and that it's important to put it in the fridge right away.

    I just avoid making a habit of putting warm things in the fridge since there's no real downside to just letting it cool to room temp for an hour first.

    On this trip we've rented a Toyota Highlander, and my mom and dad have the closely-related Toyota Sienna.

    I gotta say, if you're not looking at the minivan for whatever silly reason you think you might have, you're making a mistake. It is astonishing how much tighter and confined it feels in the Highlander when it's nearly the same size.

    Minivans are simply packaging heroes and y'all need to get over it.

    Swedneck,
    @Swedneck@mastodon.social avatar

    @TechConnectify i really do not understand why people own cars that are not box-shaped, anything else is just a waste of space.

    Especially now with EVs, there's no engine that needs to stick out in front so cars are free to be extremely cubic and efficient.

    I've given up trying to figure out what slows down video renders.

    Today, Media Encoder is struggling most with... still .pngs.

    Blasting through 4K h.264 footage no problem, about twice real-time in fact, but a motionless graph? Yeah that's gonna go at about 5 FPS today.

    @Swedneck@mastodon.social avatar

    @TechConnectify sometimes i just want to toss all electronics with a CPU into the ocean because they seem to be sentient and capable of spite.

    My phone just hates certain websites and will literally crash ANY browser i use to view them after some time, it's frankly to the point that i just stare in awe at how things can malfunction this severely and consistently for absolutely no discernable reason.
