Here comes a thread on light pollution from satellites, with a concrete action that you all can take to help push for regulation of satellites in orbit!

Astronomers have been worried about light pollution from satellites (if you've been following me for more than 24 hours, you've perhaps heard a bit about this). Astronomers spent SO much time and effort begging and pleading with Starlink to make their satellites fainter, with mixed results.

@Cris_Color Thanks for the description of what took place. Is this now a non-issue, or is this still something generating consternation somewhere? Yes, I copied what I understood to be a handle taken from a quick search of Framework, but I didn't realize how prone a Mastodon post can be to unintended messaging. I may have inadvertently become a pariah among the Lemmists for my message crafting faux pas. I hope it isn't an ongoing frustration for people over there. No bad intentions from me! ✌️

How do we create lasting changes in positions people may hold, such as the redneck uncle at the dinner table? There is this approach called "deep canvassing," which has a growing body of research. What has been your experience with these conversations?     Is it ever fair to call out the many who spend time or money on Musk? Do they have more than a passing transactional relationship, and are they morally implicated? Has their transaction become so accepted, routinised, and implemented without moral revulsion & political indignation or resistance that they too begin to acquire the smell of that "greasy secretion with a powerful odor?" Is this a 'banality of evil' where we acquire the musk? @jeffjarvis

    Sometimes, I hear or read that people feel they have zero influence or power in relation to governments. I'm interested in whether it is truly 'zero' or perhaps is 'very little.' Generally, it seems people think influence and power is all or nothing, that it's about making something happen now or it's a loss.     Big Traditional BC Ferry Car Ferry (1400ppl): 5.3
    Fast Catamaran Passenger Ferry (354ppl): 11.7
    Small DHC-2 Beaver Float Plane (6ppl): 9.5

    The Canadian municipality of Central Saanich, 'the land of plenty,' is plenty fed up with 'X' (formerly known as Twitter). Our municipality is leaving Elon Musk's 'X' by April. The decision was made largely due to the platform's change in ownership & "updated moderation policy." As an elected councillor, I'm so glad we're moving away from X.     @miki_lou @Pkbwood It's quite something to observe this backsliding loss of rail, & it seems to parallel a lack of national vision. I mean, thankfully, Trudeau is not Harper, & we don't have Polievre (fingers crossed), but that's about the extent of it. We might get dental care & even pharmacare, both big national advances, but that's only because the NDP is trying to insist on it or break the alliance with Liberals. It's not as if Trudeau or the Liberals have a national project. So railways?
