Enjoy when humans are using machines in unexpected ways. I break stuff and I do stuff. Paperbay.org is my chaotic librarian side and the server is operated by yours truly. I do photography, painting and many other things...

As 2024 marks the resurgence of RSS and Atom, I decided to update my rudimentary RSS tools from 2007 to make them contemporary and works under Python 3. The release v1.0 marks this step and allow everyone to use and improve the RSS toolset.

If you are curious about the current state of federated git forge like gitea and other, maybe have a look at:

https://forgefriends.org/blog/2023/06/21/2023-06-state-forge-federation/ published by @forgefriends

At least they are trying but it seems to be a very complex model looking at the fediverse and the actual interoperability limitations/issues of ActivityPub. Why not just federating the actual git commit log? and carrying just the notification via ActivityPub?

I've added a new tool to my collection of RSS tools. It's called rssfind.py, and it enables the discovery of Atom or RSS feeds from a specified URL. The tool utilizes two techniques: one involves searching for feed references in link references, and the other employs brute-forcing to check all well-known paths for RSS or Atom feeds

Very cool research and work from @CoolSWEng alexandria3k which includes a local access to openly-available publication data sets.

The database is huge huge but you have a set of tools to populate and access the dataset for your researches.

Checked my 6,921 bookmarks on Pinboard.in: 3,462 hit dead ends with 404s or expired domains, and many of the 3,459 left show fake content or parking pages. Only 21% from the last 2 years still work as expected. The lifespan of URLs is definitely shrinking.

Luckily some (~20%) are archived @internetarchive

What are we actually doing to avoid this?

To summarize the EU state of teleworking for commuters :

  • You waste hours in public transports which don’t work properly
  • You are basically doing video conference at the office with the resident staff who can do as much teleworking as they want
  • and you are tracked down like a rat in an experiment because everyone is afraid when you are not at the office.

Maybe it’s time for the EU to take over the employment rules and make it easier for everyone.

Not to be the “what are they teaching kids at school these days” guy. But I have two digital forensics/cyber security post grads on my team, and I had to give them the birds and the bees talk (networking and DNS).

I’m happy to of course, you don’t learn by not asking, but it was a revelation to them.

Both are more ‘qualified’ than me, but had no clue further than what an IP address does.

@SecurityWriter I have the same experience. As an example, I gave them some CTI courses and they are blown away when I show the use of the routing analysis from TTL to BGP peering to explain how an adversary infrastructure operates. It seems they had more sessions about policy, risk assessment and legal than actually the basis of operating system and networking.
