I feel very protected from such stupidity here on Mastodon, but my understanding is that Twitter is full of Very Angry White People who are high dudgeon & blaming Democrats for failing to save McCarthy from his own party.

While I definitely want to understand why Dems decided to vote with Gaetz (& don't yet) it is 100% not Dems' job to save the GOP from the consequences of their own actions.

This is all about power. In the game of power D's exercised theirs by voting to remove McCarthy.

Politically, shutdowns are bad for the Republicans. Chaos over who is Speaker is bad for Republicans. Visible chaos in general is bad for Republicans.

The risk for D's is that it is still a long way to Nov '24 and it may all be forgotten by then by the voters.

US House to vote on Motion to Vacate the Speaker Chair at roughly 1:30pm eastern. McCarthy has just entered and gaveled into session.

Expect enough Republicans to vote with a unified Democratic Caucus to oust McCarthy.

What happens after that is anyone's guess. McCarthy has offered Democrats no deals to try and gain their support.

@Deglassco As you can probably tell, this was written as a brain dump upon his return to Chicago. He was a much more polished writer usually.

He wrote another piece later for publication in a church magazine. It doesn't contain some of the historical detail this does however.

@Deglassco Yes, I found it fascinating and very informative to read later (I was a small child at the time).

And it was pivotal for him. He went back down to Mississippi and Alabama many times over the next few years.

He missed Selma only because he and many others had spent the previous week kneeling on the capital steps in Montgomery facing Alabama state troopers and couldn't justify leaving Momma at home with five kids any longer. He continued the work at home in Chicago as well.
