I like figuring out how things work. #solarpunk #OpenSource #FOSS #hacker

Open source developer (both software and hardware). If you want tech that is secure, doesn't spy on you, and works without the internet, then we have something in common.

I believe in the https://value4value.info/ economic model and would like to use it to create sustainable, non-corporate, open source projects. This includes giving a portion of donations/profits to projects that projects that they depend on.

I'd just like to point out that @jerry runs one of the top 5 Mastodon instances and doesn't block Tor users or treat them differently than others.

This is the privacy-friendly type of web that I want to resurrect from the 90s.

Shout out to Jerry for being the change many of us want to see in the world. ❤️

@adam@hax0rbana.social avatar

Remember: fossil fuel companies want people to focus on what uses #energy so we don't talk about the supply side.

They benefit from #environmentalists spending time and energy bickering with one another about whether AI uses too much #electricity, whether to support more #nuclear plants, whether we should mine more #lithium to have grid scale #batteries, and so forth.

That doesn't mean we can't talk about these things, but be #mindful where you spend your energy.

If you support , you should be supporting the protesters' right to protest. It makes no difference whether you agree with what they have to say.

Here's my 2c on the xz incident.

This is the nearest of near-misses. Anyone who suggests this was any kind of success is a fool. No system caught this, it was luck and individual heroics. That's not acceptable when unauthorised access to ~every server on the internet is on the table. We need to find a way to do better.

I look forward to hearing about how people are going to start supporting open source developers.

Full disclosure: I am a full time, unpaid open source developer.

I have a question that might be a lightning rod of controversy on the Fediverse: Does anyone have suggestions on how I could do ethical advertising?

I want to get the word out about an open source hardware password manager called Signet (https://hax0rbana.org/signet).

I've talked about it on social media and I think I've reached most the people I'm going to reach there. The people who were interested got out, joined the Matrix channel etc.

adam,
@adam@hax0rbana.social avatar

I want more people to know about the project, but I'm obviously not going to put clickbait ads anywhere, and I'm not too keen on paying some big ad company to shove banner ads in peoples' faces.

I'm most interested in reaching people who like:

  • freedom
  • open source software and hardware
  • security that is easy to use
  • not being dependent on big tech corporations

It feels really hard to compete with the bombardment of information that comes out from corporate advertising.

Not putting clickbait ads anywhere and not paying some big ad company to shove banner ads in peoples' faces while tracking them like we're living in some dystopian sci-fi novel.

But I'm willing to change that definition (mostly in terms of adding to it, but if someone can convince me those things aren't so bad then I'm open to hearing their argument)

There's a company looking for methane leaks caused by oil companies and they're finding them.

As I've tooted about before, changing the financial incentives is what will get these companies to act. Fines are one lever, for places where the regulators haven't been captured by the industry.

For places where laws/fines aren't an option, there are other levers.

I feel we should be using ALL of these options!

Wow, wild news today. M&Ms vending machines have cameras in them and secretly run facial recognition on people.

We only know about it because shoddy programming exposed an error message that tipped off someone who happened to be walking by.

I'm not asking for donations, but if you'd be willing to spread the word about the open source hardware password managers that I build and sell, it'd really help me out.

Award winning investigative journalist and bitcoin skeptic, Ian Birrell, looked into an African village that supposedly got electricity because some Bitcoin miners were installed.

https://unherd.com/2024/01/the-african-village-mining-bitcoin/

Turns out, it was true.

The village gets all the electricity they need and instead of sending excess power to a load bank, they send it to bitcoin miners which fund the operation.

The article also mentions bitcoin helping people with inflation, being a tool for activist, journalists & more.

Stop using paper. The paper and pulp industry uses 586 TWh of energy per year!

For comparison, large countries like Germany, France, and Norway all use less electricity than that per year. In fact, there are only 5 counties on Earth that surpass that number.

The government doesn't regulate their energy usage, so it's up to individuals to use fabric bags instead of paper, take notes on electronics instead of paper and so forth.

Now Bitcoin apparently uses a swimming pool of water/transaction? These claims just keep getting more and more far fetched. 🙄

https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-67564205

There are a few Bitcoin mining operations in Illinois and they use solar power and are largely air cooled with one site being submerged in mineral oil for cooling.

Liquid cooling systems are closed loop, meaning it doesn't consume any water after the hose is initially filled. So this "water usage" claim is, quite simply, bogus.

Poeple who strive to be free of the control of big, centralized, for-profit, propritary tech:

How do YOU do it? Avoid tech?

If not, what's your go-to for things like:

  1. Thermostats you can access from your phone (a not-Nest device)?
  2. Password managers (not-Lastpass)?
  3. Mobile phone (that is not trying to scan your pictures/snitch on you)?
  4. Email?
  5. File storage / backups?
  6. Where do you shop online (not-Amazon)?
  7. Calendar?
  8. Videoconferencing (not-Zoom/Teams)?
  9. Chat (not-Discord)?
