LinkedIn might be the most depressing social network.

Every job listing tells me I don’t have the right papers, I don’t have enough experience, and I didn’t get in early enough on X, Y, or Z.

I wish I could go back to my younger self and tell them to get their shit together

ahto,
@ahto@tiggi.es avatar

@lupomancer Some of these jobs feel gaslighty and likely acknowledge that they can't really get someone with those qualities but will make people feel that if they have a chance of being in that role that they will always feel ill-suited for it.

Dang, It is unfortunate that happened and I get that it is frustrating. I'd personally still encourage you to give it a go though. I can undestand that experience not wanting you to try it again but I wouldn't let it stop you.

For the most part, I'd at least reflect on what issues you were having (consider the hardware you are using, the kind of installation, and all that) and given how you typically use your computer what kind of software you want to use that you feel can effectively either replace or you already use on that platform.

I think these are steps that don't typically consider when moving to a new platform and while we can get caught up in the excitement of just experimenting and see what happens, stepping back a bit of going "Well, if I want to use this, what could I do to be effective here"

Possible you went through this process and I'm okay with trying to lend a hand where I can and I think tagging on mastodon will likely get some peeps to pop on in and try to point to a solution to a specific problem you have.

You can always experiment in a VM before you do a full-installation and get a feel of a full setup as well :)

kirkman, to fediverse

Oh awesome, I open my app to find the in a giant collective panic because a social platform owned by a giant company dares to join it.

Fedi: “I want an open platform where everything is standardized”
( enables ActivityPub)
Fedi: “NOT LIKE THAT ANYTHING BUT THAT”

If you declare an open standard and provide the clearly superior ecosystem, you relinquish control of who uses it just by it being open. You can’t have it both ways. Ever.

ahto,
@ahto@tiggi.es avatar

@kirkman Yeah, I think this is a shit take here.

You can have an open protocol and part of that protocol is federation and the choice in how instances interact with other instances. Obviously if users and instance admins want to de/federate with meta then that is their choice. However, the process that influences the decision is going to be one where people are going to be vocal and discuss it publicly and that is fine.

While yes, Admins can make those decisions based on arbitrary things like you have outlined, it's also in part of being an administrator and if there are issues with this, users can still move to different instances but importantly they can also participate in shaping these processes and policies. Can't really get into concrete matters with instances because they will have their own unique quirks and relationships which could be solved through different lenses, however that is up to them and their chosen form of governance.

People against meta are not necessarily against projects or companies adopting activitypub. They are against the company (meta), for it's track record. Just like how many instances blocked gab and other nazi affiliated stuff, they likely see meta as being inherently untrustworthy and harmful to their instance and the network.

For the most part, I am not sure people here want 'millions of users', they want their friends from other platforms which may be made easier with threads being part of the network but for the most part, signing up to mastodon isn't too tricky either and isn't illegal in the EU.

Personally, I wouldn't be happy with a company wanting to inflate it's stock price by taking in what it sees as both free and valuable content and potential engagement for their ad services.

Meta is a parasite at best.

I just found a WONDERFUL new use of AI!

I just contacted a vendor for support through their web chat interface, and the agent I got responded with one of those terrible canned responses that has nothing to do with my actual issue.

This has long infuriated me, but today, thanks to AI, I realized I had a new option for dealing with it!

Inspired, I replied, "Hey, you sound like an AI which hasn't understood my issue. Could you get a human to read my ticket?"

This is tremendous! Now that we have LLMs in the wild, when a human flunks the Turing Test, I can politely accuse them of being an AI and ask them to escalate my interaction to a human.

Everybody should do this. It will transform customer service.

ahto,
@ahto@tiggi.es avatar

@siderea nah, it will probably accelerate decline where support people are fired and replaced with AI
