Amin is short for Benjamin. I just launched an independent search engine into public beta: https://clew.se

Life is truly a journey. Mine began in Bakersfield, California, but three months later took me to northern Afghanistan 🇦🇫. I took the scenic route through India 🇮🇳 and Malaysia 🇲🇾, and am currently braving a four-year foray through higher education at Texas A&M University, studying Communication and Professional Writing. Along the way I've learned musicmaking, storytelling, the art of performance, and technological mastery.

Wanna see where my journey takes me next?

Been a long day, my first here in Costa Rica. Gonna go to sleep now.

My mom just 'fessed up to having emailed my professor to tell him that my birthday is next week (during this trip), I was wondering how he knew that. XD

She rightly guessed that there's a good chance I wouldn't have told anyone.

Hey, Fedi admins, go right now and check to make sure that you have caps/limits set on your Object Storage provider so they just stop serving you images instead of charging you $3,000 because some random person in Europe decided to scrape your instance.

Re: https://cloudisland.nz/@aurynn/111937646419975910

This is a really tragic tale (I hope they can get the charge reversed) but right at this moment I want to make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else.

Hey college-age cyclists, quick PSA:

You've heard not to text and drive; please don't text and bike either. And if you do, please wear a helmet.

Signed,
Everyone Within Range Of You

(Yes, I have seen non-helmeted cyclists texting while zipping down a road that has pedestrian crosswalks multiple times now.)

I'm proud to announce the launch of the public beta for Clew, my independent web search engine! 🎉🎉🎉

Try Clew: https://clew.se
Add to your browser: https://clew.se/add/

Clew maintains an independent index and is aiming to be a copyleft (APGLv3), self-hostable, privacy-respecting, customizable search engine which prioritizes independent creators/bloggers/writers and penalizes sites with ads and trackers.

Many features are yet to come. If you'd like to support Clew's development and server costs, you can donate to its Liberapay team: https://liberapay.com/Clew/

Boosts are very welcome, as is feedback of any kind!

Is it just me or should it be really easy to provide cheap, high-quality static site hosting with unlimited sites on custom domains/subdomains?

I kinda wanna start up a service where people can get that for, like, $12/yr. It wouldn't make me much money, sure, but it would prove a point.

hm. I was saying that as a joke but now I'm seriously considering it. If I were to start up something like that, is there anything here who'd be interested? Would probably need at least a couple dozen people to make it financially stable.

Hey, you. Yeah, you right there.

You should be proud of yourself. If you're not, well at least I promise that I'm proud of you. You are awesome and I'm honored to know you. And if I don't know you yet, I look forward to our impending friendship; say hello!

Fighting words, I know. But I still believe it to be true.

To those starting out with their writing:

9 times out of 10, one of the biggest improvements you can make is gonna be better paragraphing. Let the text breathe a little!

Breaking your text up into smaller segments makes it easier to read and lets you have more control over the pacing.

Well I worked out a way to back up my photos from my phone directly to my computer. Of course, in the process I accidentally deleted all the photos on my phone with a ill-advised rm -r, but at least the ones deleted are backed up to my computer? 🫠

Getting email responses to my blog posts makes me happy. :D

I kinda want to see if I can keep up the two-post-per-day rate this week, it seems to fit well to an hour of writing per day. Once I catch up to the pace, I'll start writing some more for tty1, once I've got that rolling again I'll get to work on the other writing projects I've got on the burner.

Having a consistent hour of writing time every day has been really great so far, I don't know why I took so long to start doing that.

Hey, authors and terminal nerds! Interested in writing a Guest Article for tty1? I've just published full guidelines to that process:

Feel free to message me here to ask questions before sending in your proposal, too. I look forward to seeing what you come up with! (boosts welcome)

So… I've been avoiding implementing any kind of PageRank deal on Clew, since I know how easily counting links in can be exploited and besides, I'm wanting to emphasize lesser-known sites anyway.

Now with that out of the way…

The current issue I'm struggling with is that I'm having some trouble trying to get the "main" page on a site to come up first when you search for something if it matches the query. Currently, if you, say, search for "cgit" you get specific commits to cgit before the main page itself.

So…

I'm thinking about implementing a sort of internal PageRank. A measure of how many pages within the same domain link to a specific page, as a sort of measure of how "important" that page is to the site. Then, giving a slight boost to pages with a high InternalPageRank; this would help main pages come up first when they fully match the query.

Thoughts?

I want to title my debut book "A Novel" to see if the publishers would put "A Novel: A Novel" on the cover.

(why do they always put "A Novel" on?)

🤔

I really don't need yet another blog, but I do like this idea.

Had an idea for a new page on my site, keeping track of all of the places I've been and when.

https://benjaminhollon.com/travels/

This is still a work in progress; my ability to recall all of the details, dates, and frequencies is hindered by the sheer number of international trips I've been on.

I wouldn't be surprised if I've spent at least a month of my life on planes, if you sum up all the flight lengths. Just to and from Malaysia is ~48 hours round trip on planes, and I've done that at least five times, hence ten days on planes.

I've been loving Manu's People and Blogs series, but one thing that has caught my eye is how much some people are paying to run their blogs. Sometimes, it's much more than I can afford and, I suspect, more than many beginning bloggers are willing or able to shell out.

So, for you wonderful, creative beginning bloggers, I’ve done some research and put together this guide to blogging on a budget.

https://benjaminhollon.com/musings/blogging-on-a-budget/

If you have recommendations I'd love to add them to this post, just let me know.
