just got some candy by placing bets on "what is the width of the non-lit period of this almost continuously lit LED on a PHY" and winning, because i said 20ms and the oscilloscope measures 21ms

@whitequark saccadic suppression ftw?

analogist,
@analogist@social.ridetrans.it avatar

@whitequark oh I see 20ms was the off-phase, but 5us was the on-phase. That makes sense

Love what you can abuse the sensory meatbag substrate to do. Can you see 5us off-phases?

analogist,
@analogist@social.ridetrans.it avatar

@whitequark yeah at first I thought you managed to figure out detection of a 5us off phase which, I mean I wouldn’t put it past you but is the least plausible one to me too, just from sheer saturation of the “integrator phase”

Also very cool that you’ve done what psychophysics calls Just Noticable Threshold for the off-phase width of a continuously on LED to be like 5ms or so. I assume the on phase for that was then >> 20 ms, like 1 second also?

Partly I love shopping at the Vietnamese and Cambodian stores in the TL coz there’s like no English translations or explanations for anything. So even if I don’t understand the text (I don’t, since I don’t speak those languages) I kind of like that I can find things out like ‘the word for fish mint is fish mint because it’s a mint that smells like fish. And you can cook fish with fish mint’

vastly superior grocery experience for my very unique use case

How #xz could have been avoided:

  1. During the 2013-2018 boom when tech workers as a class had maximum leverage, used some of the energy organizing broad tech unions and guilds instead of negotiating for fuck-you money and pulling up the ladder by telling other trades to “learn 2 code noobs”

  2. craft broadly populist multi-union legislation to raise taxes for “infra and natsec basic income fund”, for a living stipend to infra workers: railroad, steelworkers, electricians, OSS maintainers

analogist,
@analogist@social.ridetrans.it avatar

Yes, it’s a total fantasy. But still much less of a fantasy than some of the other tech solutions

grimalkina, to random
@grimalkina@mastodon.social avatar

Reading about this xz backdoor story from the outside as a person who is still learning much about the technical ins and outs, but as a psychologist it is just overwhelming to imagine a maintainer in this position and all of the feelings of pressure and skill based identity and social isolation that must be involved.

Imho psychology has a duty to show up for technology practitioners and work for them just like we see and work for the well-being of emergency workers, healthcare providers.

analogist,
@analogist@social.ridetrans.it avatar

@grimalkina the part that stood out to me was that the decision from the poor maintainer to hand over the maintainership to the malicious actor was… expedited by a slew of psyops abuse from various sockpuppet accounts that were absolutely indistinguishable from the demands that OSS maintainers of popular packets get on a routine basis.

HT to @wdormann here - somebody has backdoored the open source project XZ which has downstream impacts.

For example, although OpenSSH doesn’t use XZ, Debian patch OpenSSH and introduced a dependency which translates as the XZ changes introducing a sshd authentication bypass backdoor it appears.

One dude bothered to investigate in his free time about why ssh was running slow, so it was caught fairly early - i.e. hopefully before distros started bundling it.

analogist,
@analogist@social.ridetrans.it avatar

@ohmu @GossiTheDog doubt any other entity has 2+ years of timeframe to slowly psyops a poor maintainer into handing over control and insert the most subtle of vulnerabilities into the test/build chain that require world-class vuln researchers to understand

HeavenlyPossum, to random
@HeavenlyPossum@kolektiva.social avatar

The funniest thing about Donald Trump is that he is so routinely honest in public—“I will be a dictator,” “there will be violence if I lose”—and yet the majority of people are so concerned about decorum, so terrified of appearing to overreact, that the American political system just plods along as if he hadn’t said what he said.

analogist,
@analogist@social.ridetrans.it avatar

@jackofalltrades @HeavenlyPossum @jlou @thesquirrelfish I don’t… what? “Parasitic” to what? Oppression is about people, not about land area. You can’t “oppress land”, unless you’re oppressing people on the land. Note that your post 1/4 talks about land ratios and in 2/4 it smoothly conflates into oppressing people. Why does 1/4 imply 2/4?

analogist,
@analogist@social.ridetrans.it avatar

@HeavenlyPossum @AdrianRiskin @jlou @jackofalltrades @thesquirrelfish exactly, and what ratios are we talking exactly? 100:1 is the land ratio, not the people ratio.

So much of this starts with “100x farm land is needed to produce food per urban area”, then conveniently in the same sentence structure it somehow conflates and morphs into the unrecognizable “therefore 100x rural people are being oppressed by 1 urban elite”. If anything, the ratio of people is urban >> rural.

analogist,
@analogist@social.ridetrans.it avatar

@HeavenlyPossum @AdrianRiskin @jlou @jackofalltrades @thesquirrelfish I mean like, is this still a world with tools? Can cities in this world not produce tools, designs, and mechanisms to enhance and improve the farming?

Is there no chemistry and biology and engineering and fabrication in this world at all? Do these things not matter and only farming produce any “surplus” whatsoever, to just disappear into the maws of urban freeloaders?

Do we need transportation? Do farms produce those too?

exact same energy: tech ”entrpreneurs” do not want to use technology to solve societal problems. They want to use societal problems to enshrine their technology.

The industrial revolution was enabled by underestimating how not-actually-infinite the sky is -- that we really can fill it up with enough of our bullshit to feel the consequences

The pandemicene is enabled by a similar logic -- that there is always enough clean air somewhere to dilute the airborne threat, whether it's a cloud of infectious pathogen courtesy of an unwitting superspreader, leaded gasoline from private aircraft (🇺🇲), or a credit card a week's worth of microplastics from tires

analogist,
@analogist@social.ridetrans.it avatar

@currentbias underestimating or not caring? I think they always knew they were going to run out of {buffalo, whale, trees, air, water, …}, but colonization meant that they never had to care. The “inferior races” can deal with the depleted/polluted land, time to move on to the next profitable thing.

(As a snarky aside I gotta say, we in tech sure love to meander around philosophical musings of “how to fund sustainable open source”, usually spearheaded by people securely employed by tech making halfway to 7 figures or something, but you know, sometimes you might just want to look at your local tenants union in your own city and see how this there an isomorphic situation everywhere) @rfparty @nullagent
