Watched the original Star Wars trilogy with the kid this weekend and it’s been a long time since I have seen it. One thing that really stuck out to me was… what, thematically, is the movie trying to say about droids? The message seems to be that they are regular people like everyone else, and also chattel slaves, and also that’s it’s fine and also kind of funny? Like both Han and Luke are repeatedly shown doing obvious villain shit to droids and I can’t tell why we are not supposed to care

asociologist,
@asociologist@mastodon.social avatar

@grimalkina @cyberlyra @glyph one of the central themes of the various non main movie Star Wars things is how the rebels treat their droids much better and the empire often loses as a result. Several episodes of Clone Wars feature droids as the main characters. But none of it quite comes together into a coherent take.

Josh has summarized the issues in this really great video on costs and incentives for advertising, news, and disinformation.

@cyberlyra @josh @natematias @commscholar this reminds me of how Perrow himself criticized the use of the Normal Accidents frame for understand the 2008 financial crisis on the grounds that the banks knew about some of the lurking risks and used their political power to prevent having to more carefully address them:

Why has the Internet never produced a recipe site that provides a flowchart instead of list of ingredients? It's such a more intuitive way to do recipes, and I have to mark up all of mine.

Hey @sociology
I had a student ask me about Isabel Wilkerson's book "Caste". Have any of you read it? Is it consistent with sociological research on race and racism? (I'm hoping it is good, could use some accessible writing)

" the fact that 199 Republicans — including many of those more mainstream members — voted to give [Jordan] the job second in line to the presidency showed how far the G.O.P. has lurched to the right."

The language choice here is fascinating if depressing. The GOP "lurched" to the right implies it's something that happened awkwardly, unexpectedly, by accident. https://www.nytimes.com/live/2023/10/18/us/house-speaker-vote-jim-jordan

Each of these headlines feels like a form of genocide denial. Israel issues the warning and pushes the story to try to get credit for warning civilians, but those civilians have nowhere safe to go (and Israel hasn’t respected the last many purported safe zones). But the headlines keep coming.

Is that too cynical?

Q for academics broadly in the algorithms / platforms / social science work on digital stuff spaces: I have a sociology student finishing up their PhD whose dissertation ended up being in this space and is now looking for a post-doc. If one thing in life is constant, it's ASA's hostility towards its membership getting involved with anything related to its financing. In this case, that means rejecting a call from Sociologist 4 Palestine to disclose investments in military corporations (and rejecting even putting it to a vote) on the grounds that it's an "operational" rather than a "policy" position. If any organization should understand the political character of investment, you think it should be ASA! https://www.sociologistsforpalestine.org/news
