A very valuable analysis of the problems of "presidential administration" in elite universities, focusing on Columbia, and with additional useful analysis of the legal pluralism of university disciplinary procedures and the weaponization of Title VI. https://balkin.blogspot.com/2024/05/seeing-university-more-clearly.html?m=1

Each of these headlines feels like a form of genocide denial. Israel issues the warning and pushes the story to try to get credit for warning civilians, but those civilians have nowhere safe to go (and Israel hasn’t respected the last many purported safe zones). But the headlines keep coming.

Is that too cynical?

Watched the original Star Wars trilogy with the kid this weekend and it’s been a long time since I have seen it. One thing that really stuck out to me was… what, thematically, is the movie trying to say about droids? The message seems to be that they are regular people like everyone else, and also chattel slaves, and also that’s it’s fine and also kind of funny? Like both Han and Luke are repeatedly shown doing obvious villain shit to droids and I can’t tell why we are not supposed to care

asociologist,
@asociologist@mastodon.social avatar

@grimalkina @cyberlyra @glyph one of the central themes of the various non main movie Star Wars things is how the rebels treat their droids much better and the empire often loses as a result. Several episodes of Clone Wars feature droids as the main characters. But none of it quite comes together into a coherent take.

@cyberlyra @josh @natematias @commscholar this reminds me of how Perrow himself criticized the use of the Normal Accidents frame for understand the 2008 financial crisis on the grounds that the banks knew about some of the lurking risks and used their political power to prevent having to more carefully address them:

If one thing in life is constant, it's ASA's hostility towards its membership getting involved with anything related to its financing. In this case, that means rejecting a call from Sociologist 4 Palestine to disclose investments in military corporations (and rejecting even putting it to a vote) on the grounds that it's an "operational" rather than a "policy" position. If any organization should understand the political character of investment, you think it should be ASA! https://www.sociologistsforpalestine.org/news

Q for academics broadly in the algorithms / platforms / social science work on digital stuff spaces: I have a sociology student finishing up their PhD whose dissertation ended up being in this space and is now looking for a post-doc. Is there anywhere centralized they should be looking beyond the general higher ed job banks and the ASA job bank?

The whole point of democratic elections is to allow for a peaceful transfer of power—without violence—when a government embodying one type of policy has become widely unpopular.

The problem we've gotten into in the UK (and also the USA) is that extremists have seized control of one of the regular incumbent parties, and the other parties have responded perversely by moving towards them. Removing the ability for a course change after an election.

Labour or Tories, they're still neoliberals.

asociologist,
@asociologist@mastodon.social avatar

@cstross I don’t think this analysis hold for the US Democrats. On a surprisingly wide array of issues, the Dems have finally - if incompletely - moved left from their 1990s neoliberal peak. See Biden’s support for unions, the Inflation Reduction Act’s industrial policy approach to climate change, the antitrust actions against big tech under Lina Khan, & the increasing embrace of structural racism as a framework for guiding policy (such as debates over student loan forgiveness).

I’d love to see more research, investment, and lessons learned about the foundation model for software development, in contrast to this toxic growth-at-all-costs-for-investor-class model that we’ve naturalized. More from the Signal Foundation, Mozilla Foundation, Linux Foundation, and others about challenges, incentives, change-making, mission-driven organizing, and shaping technology under different conditions. Is such a resource out there for aspiring technologists or do we need to make one?

Quick q: does anyone have recommendations for a fundraising consultant / org that runs fundraising operations for small non-profits? Asking on behalf of a small NGO of peace activists who work in Israel / Palestine and who are trying to scale up but are overwhelmed right now.
