KDE 6 is out today! I’m looking forward to trying it out! If you’re looking for a new distro, this is a good place to start.

I'm so used to legacy projects where structuring it properly and adding tools and best practices is a mission impossible without a revolution, that I'm looking around for a good #opensource #PHP project where I can see things done well. Do you know any? I recently saw "/kbin" repo and I liked it so far, not that I've dug deep. I may event try to contribute a bit (as scarce as my free time is anyways).

awoodsnet,

@djumaka this project defines how to structure a PHP project https://github.com/php-pds/skeleton The /kbin repo seems to follow it

Only @chriscoyier can write a blog post titled “43” and people will read it (and post about it like I’m doing) https://chriscoyier.net/2024/02/14/43-2/

Why 43? Did he just turn 43? Was he reminiscing about the OG website 43things.com? Enquiring minds want to know

awoodsnet,
@awoodsnet@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey @chriscoyier I did 32. My wallet got drenched and i was attempting to dry it out. The burning leather smell was awful, and the RFID blocking insert didn’t help 🤪

I just landed back in NYC after two weeks in California, juggling many, many totally different projects. Meeting in person with many different teams. All of it working to make the web better.

I’m clearer than ever that privacy is incredibly important. A fundamental human right that’s deeply at risk. I’ve worked on the web for decades. I don’t like watching it be a machine for vacuuming up our personal lives & selling us. No thank you.

I’m glad to get to battle against such a future.

Show idea — Star Trek: Collective. It’s an origin story … of the Borg! It starts in a world a little more advanced than our own - by a hundred years or so. They have space travel . This would probably be 500-700 years before TNG.. It starts with a robot workforce. And bringing an AI online to manage it for asteroid mining . There’s some parallels to Caprica, but it’s all StarTrek

awoodsnet, (edited )
@awoodsnet@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey @JosephLeedy thats due to my plot description too generic at the moment. i only just realized i want a show about the borg. it needs some elaboration. i want to know how the collective came to be. why a queen? why are borg ships cubes? Most importantly- what kind of society would create the borg? It won’t be by a billionaire technologist like Caprica

My kid, a computer science major, said that the way programming is taught is "too capitalist" because it emphasizes efficiency and time saving over everything else, and I haven't stopped thinking about it.

awoodsnet,
@awoodsnet@phpc.social avatar

@katykaty @ben I disagree. Programming is about problem solving and automating away the monotonous and minutiae, so you focus on living your best life. When combined with Open Source software, its about having confidence in the software you use to manage your life

im listening to Pandora for some morning music, per usual, to get me going. In the song “Ghost of my Hometown” by The Strike, when they’re playing the verse of a song, It reminds me if The Police! The singer, in particular, reminds me of Sting. Then, they sing the chorus and The Strike sound like themselves again

@halva @cassidy Perhaps some engineer at google (who values the open web) will update the default setting in chrome dev tools to throttle connections to 3G speeds. That would have quite an impact.

A pet peeve of mine is "reinventing something old with a new name and insisting the new name is the only valid name."

The latest: Anyone who calls it a "DTO" instead of "product type", you're on notice.

@ian @Crell Like Ian, I’ve only heard of DTO.

Htbaa, to vim
@Htbaa@fosstodon.org avatar

Up until 4 years ago or something #Vim (or #GVim) was my code editor of choice. But when having to work with #PHP #WordPress I preferred #VSCode, which has become my main editor.

With Vim I could never get IntelliSense to work properly so I dropped that.

Currently want to look into working with (Mac)Vim again. But my #vimfiles are sorely outdated (8-12 years or so!). Time for a fresh start. Used to copy plugin's etc. to my vimfiles, but is there a better way these days to also stay up-to-date?

awoodsnet,
@awoodsnet@phpc.social avatar

@Htbaa For PHP development, the best option is PhpStorm by JetBrains, with the ideavim plugin to get Vim bindings. This pairing alone is great, but step debugging with XDebug takes things to another level.

awoodsnet, to linux
@awoodsnet@phpc.social avatar

Linux needs an organization - let’s call it
Linux Mobile Foundation (LinMoFo) - to concentrate and unite efforts for building a single non-google Linux platform. Businesses and application developers need a single target platform — which will be much easier to hit. Linux mobile will already be competing for resources against iphone and android. So gnome, kde, and other parties need to work together

Is there a best practices on upgrading a PHP package that appears no longer maintained, but you need it to get up to Laravel 10?

awoodsnet,
@awoodsnet@phpc.social avatar

@outofcontrol if the requirement is coming from Laravel, I’d ask the project why they are requiring an unmaintained package.

awoodsnet,

@outofcontrol oh i see. in that case, i’d contact the mainttainer, and offer to write a PR. If you don’t hear back, fork their project and update your composer json with your forked version
