I don't use #TikTok. Don't even have an account. Can't stand the app. But this thing with TikTok in the US is grossing me out. It's one thing to ban the thing but quite another to force the co to sell the platform to a US company. That's like a land grab, even if money is exchanged. This is going to put a chill on business relations not just with China but with companies globally, because they'll be wondering, "will I be the next Bytedance? Will they try to grab my company too?"
@liztai the annoying this is that all the problems with TikTok (besides maybe the "security risk" stuff, idk about that) are true—but they're also true for most other large social media platforms, and nothing remotely like this is being done to them 🧐
There's the argument that "well, we've got to start somewhere", but somehow I don't get the feeling other companies like Meta and Google are going to face the same scrutiny. Anyway the focus is so much on Tiktok that nobody's even bothering to argue that "well, we've got to start somewhere" lol
One of the things I’m hoping to bring to my publicsectorai.tech work is to also include perspectives outside N America and Europe. With my immigrant background and knowledge of other languages, I think that will be useful.
This is more a ‘fun’ thing: in Malaysia, an ad for Eid that is pretty meta. They made an ‘A.I. dilfitri’ ad (aidilfitri = Eid) and actually examines some interesting questions on bias in genAI
As we hear reports that it will take 10 years (🤯) to replace the 1.6 mile Francis Scott Key bridge in Baltimore, remember that China built the Danyang-Kunshan bridge and Qingdao Jiaozhou Bay Bridge in 4 years each.
Danyang-Kunshan Bridge is 102 miles long, and 100 ft above the water.
Jiaozhou Bay Bridge is 16 miles and 623 ft tall, earthquake and typhoon proof, and can withstand a direct strike from a 300,000 ton cargo ship. That last point is unfortunately topical.
@mekkaokereke interesting! Is it because China's infrastructure is more efficient or something? I'm guessing it can't be bureaucracy because there's likely to be political will to quickly build the Key bridge too 👀
@mekkaokereke that actually makes sense when I realise that most things in the US are privatised. (I come from the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu, where we have a relatively healthy balance between public sector companies and private enterprises, so I also get to see firsthand the different ways in which they operate)
@thomasfuchs I thought it was bad when ChatGPT was making up stuff, but I didn't realise it would be even worse when ChatGPT started not making up stuff! 🤖
@WhyNotZoidberg@thomasfuchs someone tell me I'm not the only one who redacts personal information from error messages before typing them into duckduckgo
What I love about #ThreeBody is that it shows countries around the world working together with China to defeat this threat. They are all equals in this conflict. There was a conversation between our main lead with one of the leaders of a European nation which I found moving. It showed that they were both humans with loved ones to protect.
I have real worries that Netflix adaptation would forgo this cooperative element and paint some countries as baddies.
@liztai waait are you talking about the show? Only realised after seeing your post that there's a #CDrama out that's different from the English one, as well as the fact that the English one is beings done by Netflix 😅
I've read the books, which were awesome (+ the translation to English was well done, with footnotes pointing out some nuances that couldn't be directly translated). I'm guessing from your posts that the (c-drama) show is worth it too?
In case you missed it, Mastodon and the Fediverse have groups, which are really useful for discovering conversations on specific topics. They work equally well on all servers.
@Deus@clovis@petrescatraian@feditips@luca what's the command? I'm comfortable with the command-line and stuff but haven't looked to deeply into how exactly my instance is running on the technical side.
@Deus@clovis@luca aha, I just figured I could use the journalctl command too.
Can't see any Lemmy-related errors, but might be because I'm not (attempting to) federate with any instances yet? I'm the only one actively using this instance at the moment and I don't remember following anything on Lemmy; only made a few comments and votes here and there...
@Deus@clovis@luca I'm able to see users and stuff alright, so it might be some "likes" formatting issue like other folks are saying. (Anyone on Lemmy, please "like" this and send me a reply so I can check if it came through!)
Did Kbin and Lemmy took inspiration from each other in some way and end up implementing exactly the same behaviour? And from the Pleroma/Akkoma side I guess it's because one started as a fork of the other 🍴
I'm Badri, a #writer and #nonfiction#editor at Snipette looking to explore and highlight the interesting aspects of our world 🔦
I also #read a lot, and am always on the lookout for interesting bits of #science, #culture, #history, or #philosophy which come out at some point or other in my articles 👀
I'm also @badrihippo, but this instance, Snipetteville, is a place for all Snipette editors to hang out. We may be talking in private, but if you see a public conversation you're most welcome to join. Feel free to tag me in deep and/or lighthearted #philosophical conversations about aspects of the world 💭
Oh and! I guess I'm (collectively) #selfhosting an instance!
For those who've seen me elsewhere in the Fedi: I'll still be there too, but will try to be more active here on Snipetteville, at least for a bit, so I can get the instance going 🚀
