I'm getting really in to the idea of deepening student's understanding of mathematical algorithms through programing.

Just did a lesson where we wrote a program in python on their calculators to simplify square roots. Here is how I broke it down.

They made:

  • program to list divisors of a number
  • program to list prime factors of a number
  • program to simplify roots

When you teach about control structures like while loops young it comes to them so easily!

@futurebird my big learning hurdle was learning how to read documentation, and learning how important and powerful documentation can be. Out of curiosity, do you include those skills? If not, how early do you think you could reasonably introduce those skills?

    @acdha I don’t think this is as stealthy as it sounds. I think it’s a clever way to image/process reflections, and that the camera isn’t invisible, just not near the screen. One red flag that this article is off base is that this is a camera technology by a lens company, but the article is filled with depictions of transparent display technologies instead.

    @chiefgyk3d if you don’t manage, the series 8 also has a blood ox sensor and EKG. They work well, and I don’t think they changed going up to Series 9.

    As noted earlier, 's announcements of 's flights are not something to be proud of.

    Now even "Airfield: Same" seems to be void of meaning, unless the whole of Neretva Vallis is considered to be one big airfield.

    C'mon , you can do a better job with the quality of your announcements. The world is watching.

    Some hints:
    • Give timezones along with dates
    • Give Sol of flight. Finding it is not trivial
    • Remove decimal digits from distances and durations

    benetherington,
    @benetherington@spacey.space avatar

    @65dBnoise the sols are actually really easy to find, unless you’re talking about future flights. https://mars.nasa.gov/technology/helicopter/#Flight-Log

    So I run this Node program on Windows 10. It every so often prints console.logs so I can keep up on its progress.
    At a certain point, it just exits. It doesn't print an error or an exception or anything. The node process just terminates.

    Under what circumstances might this happen?

    Could this happen if it runs out of RAM?

    @moira it’s hard in “real” CAD software too. Looks great!

    benetherington,
    @benetherington@spacey.space avatar

    @moira I should dig out my printed palm sander adapter. It looks pretty similar. Gotta go chunky, especially with PLA. The #1 issue is the contact surfaces wearing and becoming too smooth for a friction fit, but that’s better than it cracking.

    Smootasaurus, to random
    @Smootasaurus@mstdn.social avatar

    Definitely not bragging, but I think I found an error in my tissue engineering textbook.

    In the image are 2 pages from the book where the oxygen solubility constant is assigned the variable K, and I get that the number can change based on environmental conditions. But I don't think the unit of measure is supposed to change like this. Only found it cuz my math is wrong using the units on the right and it's taken me 2 days to catch this.

    benetherington,
    @benetherington@spacey.space avatar

    @Smootasaurus poorly written, but not an error. Those units are equivalent. The M in M/mm Hg is a molarity unit, equal to umol/L. Its bad to use equivalent units interchangeably without explanation or reason, as you just found out.

    benetherington,
    @benetherington@spacey.space avatar

    @Smootasaurus you can go from umol/L to mMol/mL if it makes things clearer, sure. Just remember that you’re multiplying by 10/10 = 0.1/0.1 = 1. 🙂

    My transit app has a silly competition where you compete for bus and train points by riding various lines. And maybe it isn’t so silly because I’m obsessed with it. I’m in 4th place! I’m taking all these losers down!!

    I wish there was a way to “reserve” a ride and let the drivers know how many people might be at each stop. But that would mean investing more in the public app. (a reserve system could use reliable riders to amplify system delay notifications— and have fun games)

    Thinking about judges wigs and other trappings of power.

    Apparently in Poland when they have legal court everyone wears robes: different colors for attorneys and the judge etc.

    Of course in the UK judges still wear wigs which US judges are free to wear too, but simply don't.

    On the US Supreme court it's just black robes-- Clarence Thomas, Antonin Scalia, and Stephen Breyer have all tried to make skull caps happen but no one else cared.

    US Supreme Court justices only some of them bother with the skull cap.

    benetherington,
    @benetherington@spacey.space avatar

    @bkardell I heavily rely on document fragments for on-the-page templating. I’d use a shadow dom to avoid css collisions, but I need enough control that I’d more or less have to go into the custom element business, and my work is much more lightweight than that.
