What I’d like from today’s Apple iPad event:

  • Camera on the long side of the iPad (where it belongs)
  • Longer battery life
  • Faster processor (duh)
  • To not have Sherlocked 🙏

@gedeonm I just wish I could draw on the iPad, it feels weird to me drawing on glass, but drawing is a hobby at most for me, so I probably just need to force myself to do it more

@gedeonm but isn't that because you're doing art-related work? drawing, painting, etc. is one of the few areas where the iPad excels for pro workflows. I wouldn't expect it to be getting in your way there. I think you're on the happiest path and likely the iPad is the absolute best device for your work (or so it would seem?)

I don't think they're likely to help those of us who do see sharp edges, but I hold out hope that Apple might be benevolent 😃

@gedeonm Was this a 2024 Ioniq 5? I have a 2020 Hyundai Tucson & had refused another ICE car from Hyundai given some of their engine issues, but I am considering the Ioniq 5 as a successor.

Busy with work & I totally missed the @Iconfactory announcement for Tapestry. Definitely worth an immediate backing & I had to tack on some sweet pins as well.

Amazing hand-drawn, redo of the animated intro of the 80’s kids cartoon Thundercats. This took the artist about 2 months to complete, everything is hand-drawn, even the effects. Reminder - I created https://github.com/unixorn/internet-of-trash as a list of things that don't work well, have had the vendor try to force you to use the cloud for something that was locally controlled, or are otherwise a pain to use with home automation.

If something is supposedly for but is a pain to use with home automation, please add it to the list.

The goal is to have a warning list of products to avoid, especially for people new to or .

@unixorn @homeassistant While not as flagrant as the others, I think I'd put on this list. They force you into cloud-connected use. They have SD cards & RTSP firmware for their cameras, but the former still requires the app (and connection to their services) & the latter is just the least possible functionality. A properly built public API would fix much of their software-side issues.

Hardware-side is a different story as I think their products are lackluster…

@gedeonm I honestly don't know what to believe. Some of the phrasing in that post makes me question:

I'm not saying the complaints are wrong, but that framing is concerning to me given he was believed to be the victim in that situation.

I hoped they got a good contract as it's not just the A-list celebrities that make movies & TV work…

TLDR... it's fun & totally worth seeing

Unfortunately, while there are some valid criticisms & superhero fatigue, there are also people who didn't & won't watch it, yet have declared it bad without knowing anything about it. There seems to be some hating on the MCU lately & Brie Larson in particular.

With all the posts about I decided to take the plunge. Started by re-watching the original movie starring James Spader & Kurt Russell. I had forgotten a lot of it. The last 1/3 of the flick is forgettable but the entire world building/discovery is compelling.

The pilot of SG-1 picks up a year after the events of the film & so far I like it. Richard Dean Anderson as Russell’s character is interesting. He’s now the alpha male instead of the nerd (Macgyver), interesting role reversal

@gedeonm The rules of the gate evolve over time and aren't really what you'd call "rock solid”. The show really is great and there's also the TV movies for . I rather enjoyed quite a bit as they change up the cast, rules and setting to make something fresh and you get Joe Flanigan (lots of fun as the lead) & Jason Momoa pretty early in his career. I've re-watched both series and it's still high up in my fave TV.

You have so much to enjoy if it all sticks for you 😃

    @jsq I don't feel quite as negative about it, but it definitely isn't as solid as it used to be. I do agree that I would find it hard to move elsewhere, but we're obviously not who they care about anymore...

    Weird bug I’ve never seen with any previous iPhone I’ve owned: my iPhone 15 Pro stopped charging over USB-C. Tried multiple cables, multiple chargers, nothing.

    Powered the iPhone off and back on, and it’s back to normal. But I can’t recall ever seeing an iPhone refuse to charge before. (iOS 17.0.3.)

    @gruber I’ve seen that in the past with lightning devices. I think my iPad Pro 9.7" and one of my old iPhones. Fix was the same and it was exceptionally rare in occurrence.

    @ivory I bought stickers, but I'm not the biggest fan of Cotton Bureau as I think their product selection is lacking (everyone seems to use them so I must be in the minority). Would love to buy a hat, but neither option they present would be good for me 🤷🏻‍♂️

    @gedeonm Yep, Netflix has been gone for a bit here.IMO, it’s just overpriced for the content/features they have. I’ve still got lots of services, but Netflix no longer makes the cut.

    Ramaswamy suggests including physical fitness on the SAT which seems on its face to be ridiculous.

    “a 1-mile run, pull-ups, sit-ups, shuttle run, etc.”

    What does this tell a college or university about the student? Does it have any bearing on how the student would perform at the school? I could see this for specific cases, such as a military academy school, but as part of a general test?

    Honestly curious if I am missing something? 😉

    I'm not sure ActivityPub integration has ANYTHING to do with expanding the network for Meta/Threads. IMO, they're not interested in Fedi data. They are also not worried about the sliver of people who will be concerned with the privacy implications & want to move to another server.

    I think they're interested in it as a future counter to regulator concerns. If you can point to an escape hatch, arguing that customers accept the privacy tradeoff is much more convincing

    I continue to have issues with @ivory not syncing timeline position (or not following the synced position). I keep Ivory open on Mac at all times, but also read from my iPhone when away. Often, when I switch (mostly when going to the Mac), it doesn't sync up. I ALWAYS have to click to something other than the home timeline & then back to get it to try to change to the synced timeline position. When that doesn't work and a 2nd click on the Home either put it at the right place or takes me to now.

    Inspired by the GOP in NC to post this, as they've held onto power through questionable means & have a stranglehold on this state.

    The ‘R' next to a candidate name has turned into a scarlet letter. Regardless of who they are as a person, they’ve aligned themselves with a fascist, racist, misogynistic political party and any opinions they espouse that sound “reasonable" have to be treated with a huge amount of skepticism as they potentially belie a dangerous agenda.
