Reddit revenue rises 20% ahead of IPO, but it isn’t profitable yet (www.businesstimes.com.sg)

REDDIT posted a more than 20 per cent rise in revenue in 2023 versus the year before, sources familiar with the situation said, as it prepares for one of the United States’ most anticipated potential initial public offerings (IPOs).

@daringfireball Am I the only one that see's Daring Fireball generic images on their links and just scrolls by because they look like default, unloadable/unloaded Mastodon image preview placeholders?

Or, more likely, I'm just obstinate and am like, "don't give me a link image? i'm scrollin" lol

I still very much like the @MonaApp client, but I can’t really use it on my mac anymore.

Every time I relaunch Mac it scrolls to “now” in my timeline and doesn’t respect the reading position sync location my iPhone and iPad do.

It’s vexing!

blhue,

@fogelnet @MonaApp Good to know. I would like to give Ivory a whirl, but the sub fee is beyond me. I don't have a problem with subs, but dang, it's expensive. Wish they had a lifetime sub. Those are somehow more palatable even if they're too expensive.

We’ve finally cleared our import queue after a huge surge in people migrating from other reader apps. Will deploy a few upgrades to it tomorrow and lift the import limit.

Quite a few performance enhancements this week. The amount of data the importer processed in about one hour today would have taken over 40 hours on Monday.

blhue,

@omnivore I keep asking if there is a migration path from Instapaper. Anyone know?

blhue,

@omnivore Thanks! I’ll give it a go.

blhue,

@krzyzanowskim My CMD-OPT-P (of all things!) very inconveniently gets overridden by something every so often and I have to go through this painstaking process to discover what it is. So annoying. One would think I'd take notes on this and the next time it happens I'd know.

What’s the status of and image displaying

Patience running thin.

blhue,

@Anthro It’s like this regularly for me. It seems to come and go. I have a theory it aligns when either the US or UK is sleeping (less load on the system), but meant to ask.

It’s improved over time thanks to the efforts of @wild1145 but even after the media cache was migrated, loading images is still brutally slow at times.

blhue,

@wild1145 @Anthro Thanks for all the effort and for the feedback!

Sometimes images load as I scroll without issue. Sometimes they load after a few seconds as I scroll and pause to let things catch up. Sometimes it may take 30+ seconds for them to load if I pause long enough because I want to see those particular images. Some never load.

If you can't download shows on the TWiT network since yesterday, it may be due to an ad-blocking VPN, DNS, or router, such as Eero Plus.

To temporarily alleviate the problem, disable those ad-blocking features, or add this to your allow-list if you have such functionality: twit.cachefly.net

(Ad/tracking-blockers completely break on podcast downloads. Podcast ads don't work the same way as scripts on web pages, and can't be blocked without blocking the audio downloads completely.)

blhue,

@overcastfm I ran into this last year I think where podcast ads were having a fist fight with Pi-Hole and Pi-Hole was winning. Still, it was vexing for a while and I had to get help from @overcastfm to solve it (for which I appreciate the hand!).

Can the human eye distinguish between a photo captured by an iPhone with a 48MP camera and one captured by a Samsung mobile camera with 200MP? I don't believe the naked eye can perceive any difference. However, an experienced photographer/artist can list some differences. IDK. What do you think?

blhue,

@nixCraft Depends on how many MP your eyes are.

Been dealing w/ a heart condition called atrial fibrillation for many years, and for a long time medicine kept it under control. Until recently. Was told that the new Apple watches will let you know when/if you're in afib. I already had an older one but all the literature said the newer was better at afib detection and monitoring.

I've found that while there were a few times over the past few months where the watch has alerted me to my heart being in afib, it's more the exception than the rule. Because apparently I've been in afib long enough w/out noticing that the heart thinks this is normal. Got a real heart monitor and found out it's pretty much in afib all the time.

Obviously, this is less than ideal, and we're looking at various treatment options. The point of this post, however, is just to say that if you're counting on your Apple watch to let you know if your afib is under control, you probably shouldn't.

blhue,

@briankrebs Good luck with your condition

I shared this privately before, but I just got the okay to share it in public. The Bluegrass Archive is online with a website and everything. This is a MASSIVE trove of legal live recordings from earliest days right up to now, which you can download and listen to for free. It is one of the greatest achievements of the fan-driven archiving community I've ever seen. I contributed a small number of filesets out of the thousands here.

@mrcompletely I wonder how much of this originally came from (a site I operated until certain so and so's forced us to pull the plug). I see some stuff on this list that caused the so and so's to speak with us back when. Wishing them the best!

It's technically possible to run pixelfed with a sqlite database, though I can't guarantee that every SQL query is supported atm

I'm working to remove Redis as a dep

and

add basic sqlite support for one-click installs (meant for low use instances of 10 or fewer users)

Can you imagine, we don't require npm so this could be as easy as WordPress to install, or easier with a no-config sqlite db

blhue,

@dansup I’m always +1 on removing Redis from projects where possible. I find it’s often thrown in as a crutch to overcome a performance issue that could be handled better otherwise (schema/query improvements, Dynamo (or the like), etc.
