what's the deal with Tolkien naming one of the orcs "Shagrat"? isn't "shag" a pretty rude word for British people? wouldn't that be like me naming a character "Fuckweasel"?

bnut,
@bnut@aus.social avatar

@est are you saying you wouldn’t name a character Fuckweasel?

bnut,
@bnut@aus.social avatar

@eniko looks great! Out of interest, what are the limitations you’re working under? Is palette rotation for backgrounds only? Can it apply to sprites? Can you have a different palette per sprite? How many indices do you have to play with?

Since your first post I’ve been wonder how you’d make a tool to assist making them.

bnut,
@bnut@aus.social avatar

@eniko interesting, thanks!

Please ignore the rest of this if you don't want ideas, I'm just having fun coming up with ideas with the technique:

I wonder if you could extend your screendoor technique with each layer using mutually prime phases, it will repeat less frequently and may have more interesting interference.

For example:
|--|--|--|--|--| (phase of 3)
|----|----|----| (phase of 5)

The phases of those two overlapping sprites sync up after 15 frames, even though they're individually only 3 and 5 frames long (You'd probably put smaller ripples in the smaller phases). If you had 4 sprites with length 3,4,5,7 it would only repeat after 420 frames, etc.

Mastodon gets lil a contextless toon bird from our next , as treat

(btw, it lights correctly under all conditions, and I didn't modify source/shaders to pull that off, and why yes I'm very proud :ameowbongo: )

made the walls a wee bit higher (still not as high as they probably should be but eh)

how's this feel scale wise? do the walls feel tall enough? does the viewport feel too "zoomed in"?

bnut,
@bnut@aus.social avatar

@eniko I think it’s assumed it’s a cross-section, so it’s not necessarily needing to show the full wall. It may help to consider what you’d do when the character is occluded by a wall (ie. if you hide or shorten the wall, or if you show an x-ray-like silhouette)

I'm realizing that I've tilted back to basically being a thanks largely to Mastodon and

GOD DAMMIT Y'ALL I'D ESCAPED! I WAS A REGULAR PERSON! NOOOOOoooooo <Dust dev announces sequel> oooooh!

(EDIT: joke-ish, there's no new news about Dust 2, but he's been hinting at it for years, and that I know that really just further confirms the above I guess)

@glassbottommeg I’ve had more than enough furry stuff randomly pop up in my timeline, but I’ve been missing out on some cool birds apparently. Where are all the cool birds?

Yeah gpus made gamedev less fun

bnut,
@bnut@aus.social avatar

@eniko I’ve been thinking for a while that expectations get in the way of good games, be it content quantity or graphical quality, etc. Rarely are those expectations actually necessary for how fun, memorable, or engaging the game is. They make it hard for an individual to make a game, or to do so in a reasonable time. That definitely started with mass storage and GPUs, although I’m not sure if they’re the problem or just a catalyst. In theory they should make it easier to make games if expectations didn’t get in the way.

@scdollins can you do a cheap test to see if you need more precision? ie. if the ball’s centre goes from one side of the ellipse to the other.

Alternatively you could use a higher iteration rate, but with a signed distance field to see how many iterations are safe to do. The signed distance approach may also make it easier to generalise the approach to different collider shapes.

So is Russia even running out of windows for high profile people to suspiciously fall out of? They're having to push guys out of entire planes, now?

Did they send all their windows to Ukraine only to have them shattered on entry and now the FSB is all OH SHIT and sweating? Telling Putin "sir we don't have windows to push people out of" and Putin yelling "FIGURE IT OUT"

Calling all citizen scientists! Lunar photos needed for climate research.

An old friend of mine, Peter Thejll, a senior scientist with the Danish Meteorological Institute, is asking for help on a project () that will help to measure the reflectivity of the Earth (its albedo). The observations will be used to improve our present climate models. This project is being done along with a research program being undertaken by a Danish astronaut who is presently on…

@wnknisely I wonder if this will be a problem for it: https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/11nzrb0/samsung_space_zoom_moon_shots_are_fake_and_here/

I’m also curious how it’ll be normalised, ie. will it be compared to the brightness of a few recognisable stars also in shot? I guess it’ll have to account for the time and gps location, as the angle between the ground moon and sun will change. Also localised atmospheric conditions like fire, smog, clouds, etc.

@eniko there’s a thing where you write a novel in a month, and that’s 50k, so you may even be 1/6th of the way! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Novel_Writing_Month

I remember the 2000 Election. There were enough votes for Ralph Nader to hand the election to George W. Bush.

I remember the 2016 Election. There were enough votes for Jill Stein to hand the election to Donald Trump.

In 2024 the Green Party is running Cornell West. Let’s not repeat this history, friends

Your vote is not a marriage. You’re not choosing a life partner. It’s a chess move for what’s best for the country and the world.

@alienmelon I like it, the fade is really nice!

Although I watched it before reading your text the first time, and I didn’t notice the sky that first time. I was distracted by the nice atmospheric fog effect you’ve got, and wondering why the houses don’t seem to have the effect. The houses were what drew my focus as they’re almost black on top of a fairly uniform lighter background. Which is much more contrast more centred on the screen, compared to the sky.

Maybe you can extend the fog to the outside of the houses, or have the player go slightly uphill before entering the valley, so you’re facing the sky, and the houses are behind the crest until it’s faded.

@ivory hey, I’m having lots of photos not loading well, mostly in the timeline, but also outside it. It’s not a net issue, but maybe slow instances - it doesn’t seem to recover well from a failure. Maybe an issue caching the failure? It seemed to fix some of them when I relaunch the app. Also some images failed to open when I tap them, like the gesture recognised had disconnected.
